Chapter 14 The Women He Chose
Soft music drifted through Loft Haven’s grand ballroom. Crystal chandeliers scattered light across two hundred guests seated at white-draped tables, while beyond the glass the night ocean broke against the island shore.
Reiner stood behind a polished wooden podium in a crisp tuxedo, his face drawn beneath the ballroom lights. Macey held his left arm with open triumph, while Annabelle stood on his right with an executive tablet. Their matching silk gowns were calculated echoes of Joan’s style.
Reiner tapped the microphone, and the quiet chatter in the room quickly died down.
"Good evening, everyone," Reiner began, his voice carrying through the sound system. "Welcome to Loft Haven. Tonight was meant to celebrate a new business venture. But leadership requires honesty, even when that honesty is painful."
In the back of the room, the heavy double doors swung open without a sound. Joan stepped into the ballroom, dressed in a sharp navy suit. Lena Park walked right behind her, carrying a sleek black briefcase. They moved silently along the back wall, watching as Reiner continued his speech.
"In recent weeks, my personal life has suffered a profound betrayal," Reiner announced, scanning the guests.
"My wife, Joan, stepped away from her role at Loft International after engaging in serious financial misconduct. She also pursued a private relationship with my business rival, Graham Voss, and ended our family’s future behind my back. "
A collective gasp rippled through the audience. Board members traded shocked looks, and news reporters quickly began typing on their phones.
Macey squeezed Reiner’s arm, looking up at him with wide, sympathetic eyes. Annabelle gave a small, practiced nod toward the press table.
"It has been devastating," Reiner continued.
"But two people stayed beside me through the darkest weeks.
Macey and Annabelle Bellamy showed me what loyalty looks like.
I ask the public and the business community to respect my decision to move forward in a committed, nontraditional relationship with both women as my life partners. "
Macey beamed, leaning her head against Reiner's shoulder.
"You are free to choose my sisters, Reiner," Joan called from the main aisle. "But you will not lie about your wife to justify that decision."
The entire room turned.
Joan walked down the center aisle without breaking stride. Lena followed close behind.
Reiner froze, his hand tightening on the edges of the wooden podium. "Joan? What are you doing here? Security—"
"Security will not touch me," Joan said, stopping right at the front table, directly below the stage. "I am the co-founder of this company, a member of the board of directors, and a major shareholder. I have every legal right to be in this room."
Annabelle stepped forward, her smile slipping. "Joan, you are on administrative leave. Leave before you damage your reputation any further."
"My reputation is not what is being ruined tonight, Annabelle." Joan looked to the silver-haired board chair. "Arthur, as co-founder, I request five minutes to present authenticated evidence before any corporate announcement is finalized."
Arthur Whitmore looked from Reiner to Joan, then raised a hand. "Granted. Turn on the presentation screens."
Annabelle’s face went pale. "Reiner, stop this. She is just trying to embarrass you."
"If she has evidence, let her show it." Reiner’s voice shook as doubt finally broke through.
Lena connected her laptop at the audio-visual booth. The screens behind the podium lit with two medical documents side by side.
"The first lie concerns our lost child," Joan said. "My sisters forged a copy of my hospital discharge paper to make it appear I chose an elective termination. The genuine document is on the left; Annabelle’s counterfeit is on the right."
A live video window opened in the corner of the screen, revealing a woman physician.
"My name is Dr. Warren," the doctor said clearly over the sound system.
"I was Joan Loft’s primary physician. I can confirm on the record that Mrs. Loft suffered a natural miscarriage three months ago.
The document claiming she ended her pregnancy is a complete forgery.
I have already filed an official report with legal authorities. "
Reiner turned toward Annabelle. "You told me this was real."
"She’s lying. The doctor is lying." Macey shouted, her voice high and panicked.
"Next is the matter of Graham Voss," Joan continued, ignoring the disruption.
The screen shifted to show an official laboratory document.
"This is the medical toxicology report for Graham Voss," Joan explained. "It proves he was heavily drugged on the night he was found in the hotel suite. The chemical in his system matches the medication Macey removed from the prescription bottle in my private bathroom."
Reiner looked down at Macey. "You took her medicine?"
"I had a panic attack!" Macey cried out, her hands shaking as she pulled away from his arm. "Reiner, you have to believe me."
"And finally, the financial transfer that was used to remove me from my position," Joan said.
A chart of access logs, device identifiers, and timestamps replaced the toxicology report.
"This log shows the exact digital path of the money transfer," Lena said. "It originated from the laptop assigned to Annabelle Bellamy, through an executive session Reiner opened to her, and was authenticated with the hardware key Annabelle stole from Joan."
The board members erupted into conversation. Arthur Whitmore rose. "Reiner, did you grant her those credentials without board approval?"
Reiner could not answer. Beside him, Annabelle typed frantically on her tablet, trying to erase files she no longer controlled.
"It gets worse," Joan said. "Lena, play the smart-home audio file."
The smart-home recording filled the ballroom. Two familiar voices silenced every conversation.
"We used Joan's medicine to drug Graham, and we changed the hospital paper," Annabelle’s recorded voice echoed clearly. "Reiner believes every word because he wants to believe it. Once Joan is publicly discredited, another apparent overdose will make sure she can never return."
"You said we were doing this together." Macey’s recorded voice replied on the tape. "You just want to control the company."
"Reiner is an asset, Macey, not a soulmate," Annabelle’s voice snapped back.
The crowd gasped in horror. Several journalists began taking rapid photos of the two sisters.
Annabelle backed toward the side exit. "This recording is AI-generated."
She reached the side door, but two plainclothes Fijian officers who had entered with the security team stepped in front of her. "Stay where you are, ma’am. This event has been under police supervision since your arrival."
"Macey made me do it!" Annabelle screamed, pointing at her twin. "She was the one obsessed with Reiner. She staged the assault in the living room. She scratched her own neck."
"That's not true." Macey sobbed, dropping to her knees on the stage. She looked up at Joan with tear-filled eyes. "Joan, please. Annabelle forced me. I called you last week, remember? I offered to tell you everything!"
Joan looked down at her sister without pity. "Lena, play the phone call."
Another audio file played. Macey’s voice filled the quiet room once more: "If I help you prove Annabelle changed the medical papers and drugged Graham, will you promise to leave Reiner to me? He kissed both of us, Joan. He promised to try a relationship with us."
Macey froze, her face instantly turning red with embarrassment. She looked at Reiner, but he stepped back from her as if she were a total stranger.
"You traded your own twin sister to keep a man who wasn't yours," Joan said. "You two have spent your entire lives taking what belonged to me. But it ends tonight."
Reiner stood motionless as the lies supporting his pride collapsed around him. He searched Joan’s face for the wife who had always saved him and found only judgment.
"Joan..." Reiner choked out, taking a small step toward the edge of the stage. "I didn't know. They tricked me. I was angry, and I was hurt, but I didn't know..."
"You knew enough, Reiner." Joan’s voice carried across the front rows. "They lied to you, but they did not force your choices."
Joan turned to Lena, who hit one final key on her laptop screen.
A final audio clip played through the ballroom. It was Reiner’s own deep voice, heavy with alcohol and bitterness, recorded inside the penthouse weeks ago:
"Joan chose him. I choose both of you."
His own words settled over the ballroom, stripped of every excuse.
Reiner closed his eyes. He could not deny the recording, the kisses, or the choice he had made after twelve years beside Joan.
"You didn't just believe them, Reiner," Joan said, looking him dead in the eye. "You rewarded them. You gave them my office, my authority, and my place beside you."
Arthur Whitmore stepped forward from the main table and signaled to security. "Keep both women on the stage and away from every device while the board considers the evidence."
"Wait." Reiner pleaded, looking around at the board members. "Please, let me explain."
"Not yet," Arthur said. "The board will act first."
Security separated the twins from Reiner and confiscated their devices. For the first time since entering Joan’s home, neither sister controlled the room.
Reiner came down from the stage, but Joan stopped him with one raised hand. Before he could plead ignorance, Arthur Whitmore called the other six board members into an immediate vote.
"Because of severe governance failures, reckless delegation of authority, and personal misconduct that threatens Loft International, Reiner Loft is placed on indefinite administrative leave, effective immediately," Arthur announced after the vote. "An independent governance review begins tonight."
Reiner did not argue. His own recorded words still hung in the ballroom, stripping away every excuse he might have offered.
Four uniformed Fijian police officers entered from the service corridor and joined the plainclothes investigators already guarding the exits.
Annabelle and Macey were arrested on suspicion of corporate fraud, identity theft, medical-document falsification, conspiracy, prescription theft, and the illegal drugging of Graham Voss.
Macey screamed for Joan to save her while Annabelle blamed Macey. Joan remained still and let consequences reach them both.
When the sisters had been escorted toward the police launch, Reiner approached Joan in the marble corridor outside the ballroom. "They tricked me," he said, tears bright in his gray eyes. "I was wrong. Please let me explain."
"They lied," Joan answered. "But they did not force you to override me, throw me out of our home, suspend me, kiss them, or stand on that stage preparing to destroy my reputation. The truth about my sisters does not change the truth about you."
Joan placed a folded petition for legal separation on the marble table between them. "This protects me immediately. My attorneys will file the formal divorce petition when I return to New York. From now on, you communicate with me through counsel."
Reiner stared at the papers. "Please don’t end our marriage."
"Our old marriage ended when you chose two other women because their lies were easier than my grief," Joan said. "What happens after this is no longer yours to control."
She turned away. Lena joined her, and together they walked toward the dock while the launch celebration continued under the senior operations team. Joan had refused to let Reiner’s failure destroy the work of hundreds of employees.
A police-supervised launch carried Joan and Lena toward Viti Levu. The main island’s lights grew brighter across the black water as Loft Haven receded behind them. Joan felt no triumph—only freedom.
