Chapter 6 The Good Night

The Good Night

Julian

Wednesday, early July

I leave the office at four-thirty, which might be a personal record for the last six months.

Carla actually looks up from her computer when I grab my jacket, her eyebrows climbing toward her hairline. "Everything okay?"

"Fine. Just heading out early."

"It's not even five."

"I'm aware of what time it is."

"You have the Henderson call at five-fifteen."

"Reschedule it."

She stares at me like I've announced I'm joining a monastery. "To when?"

"Tomorrow. Friday. Next week. I don't care." I'm already moving toward the elevator. "Eliza has her interview prep tonight. I'm going home."

The drive takes twenty minutes in light traffic, which gives me plenty of time to think about how badly I've handled the last few months.

The balcony conversation plays on repeat in my head, the way Eliza's hand felt in mine, the way her face changed when my phone rang.

I said five minutes. I took forty. She went to the bedroom alone and said she didn't know how much longer she could do this.

I heard her say that. I stood outside the door and listened, and then I walked away.

Not tonight. Tonight I'm showing up.

The apartment is quiet when I let myself in. For a moment I think Eliza isn't home, but then I hear rustling from the study and follow the sound.

She's sitting cross-legged on the floor, surrounded by printed slides and handwritten notes, her laptop open on the carpet beside her.

Her hair is twisted up in a messy bun, held in place by what appears to be a pencil, and she's wearing the old Yale sweatshirt with the hole in the sleeve.

She looks stressed and beautiful and completely in her element.

"Hey." I lean against the doorframe. "How's it going?"

She looks up, startled. "You're home."

"I live here."

"It's four-fifty."

"I left early."

Eliza blinks at me, processing this information like it's in a foreign language. "Why?"

"Because your interview is tomorrow and I figured you might want help prepping." I push off from the doorframe and cross to where she's sitting, lowering myself to the floor beside her. "Unless you'd rather I leave you alone. I can do that too."

"No, I..." She shakes her head, still looking slightly stunned. "You remembered."

"You texted me about it. Presentation prep all week."

"I text you about a lot of things."

"I know. I'm trying to be better about actually reading them."

Something shifts in her expression, a softening I haven't seen in weeks.

She gestures at the chaos of papers around her.

"It's kind of a mess. Claire wants me to present on kelp forest recovery dynamics, but I haven't done a formal presentation in over a year and I keep second-guessing my structure. "

"Walk me through it."

"Julian, you don't have to..."

"I want to." I pick up one of the printed slides, a graph showing biomass recovery rates over time. "Pretend I'm the interview panel. Impress me."

Eliza laughs, a short surprised sound. "You want me to practice my presentation on you?"

"Unless you have a better audience hiding somewhere."

She studies my face for a moment, looking for the catch. I try to keep my expression open, sincere, all the things I should have been showing her for months.

She gathers the nearest pages. "Okay. But you have to actually pay attention. No checking your phone."

"Scout's honor."

"You were never a scout."

"I could have been. I have excellent wilderness survival instincts."

"You got lost in the parking garage last month."

"That garage is a labyrinth. Even Theseus would struggle."

She's smiling now, really smiling, and something in my chest loosens. This is us. This is who we are when I'm not ruining it. Stupid jokes and gentle mockery and the easy rhythm of two people who actually like each other.

"Fine." She gathers her slides into a rough stack and takes a breath.

"So the presentation is basically about demonstrating that I understand current research methodologies while also showing I can think critically about gaps in the existing literature.

Claire's program focuses on kelp forest ecosystems along the New England coast, and there's been really interesting work on how warming water temperatures are affecting holdfast attachment strength. "

"Holdfast?"

"The root-like structure that anchors kelp to the seafloor. Except it's not really a root because kelp doesn't absorb nutrients that way. It's more like... imagine if a tree was glued to the ground instead of growing into it."

"Got it. Glue roots."

"Please never say that in front of actual marine biologists."

I grin. "Continue."

She does. For the next forty-five minutes, Eliza walks me through her presentation, explaining concepts I half-remember from her grad school days and introducing new research I've never heard of.

She talks about thermal tolerance thresholds and grazing pressure from sea urchins and the cascading effects of losing a foundational species.

Her hands move constantly, drawing invisible diagrams in the air, and her voice gets faster and more animated as she warms to her subject.

She stops checking whether I'm listening. God, I've made her do that in her own home. I turn the next slide toward us and ask about the graph before she has to prompt me.

She taps a note in the margin. "The tricky part is that the panel will probably push back on my methodology section.

Claire mentioned they had concerns about sample size in the pilot study, and I need to be ready to defend my statistical approach without sounding defensive.

I don't want them to think I'm brushing off a fair question. "

"You're not arrogant. You're thorough."

"Thorough can read as arrogant if you're not careful. Especially for women in STEM. We have to be competent but not intimidating, confident but not aggressive, knowledgeable but not condescending." She sighs. "It's exhausting."

"What if you led with the limitations? Acknowledge the sample size issue upfront, frame it as an area for future research rather than a flaw in your design."

Eliza tilts her head, considering. "That's... actually not terrible advice."

"Don't sound so surprised."

"I'm constantly surprised by you. It keeps the marriage interesting."

My phone buzzes in my pocket. We both hear it. Eliza's expression flickers, that familiar guardedness sliding into place.

I pull the phone out, glance at the screen. Henderson, probably calling about the meeting I rescheduled. I silence it and set it face-down on the carpet.

"You're not going to answer that?"

"No."

"It might be important."

"You're important." The words come out more intense than I intended. "This is important. Whatever Henderson wants can wait until tomorrow."

Eliza stares at me for a long moment. I can see her weighing the evidence, measuring this gesture against months of contradictory data. I don't blame her for being skeptical. I've given her plenty of reasons.

I set the slide down between us. "I owe you an apology.

A real one, not just 'sorry I was late' or 'sorry about Margot.

' I asked you to put your career on hold when the foundation launched.

You did that for me, and then I stopped asking what you wanted.

I stopped asking what you needed. I just assumed you were fine because you weren't complaining. "

"I was complaining. You weren't listening."

"I know. I'm listening now."

"Are you?"

"I'm trying to be." I reach out and take her hand, the gesture tentative in a way it shouldn't have to be after four years of marriage.

"I can't promise I'll be perfect. I'll probably still work too much and forget things and make you want to throw my phone into the harbor.

But I can promise I'll try harder. I can promise that when you tell me something matters, I'll believe you. "

Eliza's fingers curl around mine. Her eyes are bright, and for a terrible moment I think she might cry. Instead she squeezes my hand and says, "If you throw your phone in the harbor, that's littering. The fish don't deserve that."

I laugh, startled and relieved. "Very environmentally conscious of you."

"I'm a marine biologist. It's literally my job to care about what ends up in the water."

"So noted. Phone stays out of the harbor."

"Thank you."

We sit there on the floor of the study, holding hands among her scattered presentation slides, and for the first time in months I feel like we might actually be okay. I want more evenings with her on this floor. I want her to expect me here.

Eliza leans forward and kisses me.

It's soft at first, tentative, like she's testing whether this is allowed.

I cup her face in my hands and kiss her back, and something that's been wound tight in my chest finally releases.

She tastes like the mint tea she drinks when she's stressed, and her hand fists in the front of my shirt, pulling me closer.

When we break apart, her cheeks are flushed and her eyes are bright.

Her forehead rests against mine. "Hi."

"Hi yourself."

"That was nice."

"Yeah." I tuck a strand of hair behind her ear. "It really was."

She glances at the mess of papers around us, then back at me. "I should probably organize this before tomorrow."

"Probably."

"Or..." She bites her lip. "Or I could organize it in the morning and we could go to bed now."

"It's barely seven."

"I didn't say anything about sleeping."

The smile that spreads across my face feels unfamiliar, almost rusty from disuse. "Dr. Morrow, are you propositioning me?"

"I'm your wife. I'm allowed to proposition you."

"You absolutely are." I stand and pull her to her feet, her printed slides scattering across the carpet. "Leave them. I'll help you organize in the morning."

"You'll be at the office by six."

"I'll go in late."

She raises an eyebrow. "Who are you and what have you done with my husband?"

"I'm trying something new. Being present. You should give me feedback on my performance."

"Oh, I intend to."

She takes my hand and leads me toward the bedroom. I follow.

The second the door closes, I back her against it and kiss her the way I've been wanting to all night. Not careful. Not tentative. Her mouth opens under mine and she makes a small sound that goes straight to my cock.

"Look at me."

She does. Flushed. Eyes bright. That Yale sweatshirt hanging off one shoulder.

"Say what you want."

"I want you," she says. "I want my husband."

"That's my girl."

I pull the sweatshirt over her head. She's not wearing a bra. Her nipples are already tight, and I palm one breast while I kiss down her throat, then lower, until I take her into my mouth and suck. She arches. Her fingers fist in my hair.

"Julian—"

"Quiet. Let me take care of you."

I get her pants off, then her underwear. Drop to my knees on our bedroom floor and hook one of her legs over my shoulder. She's already wet. I can see it. Smell it. I drag my tongue through her cunt in one slow pass and she swears.

"Fuck. You taste—" I don't finish. I put my mouth on her clit and work her with short, filthy strokes while I push two fingers inside her. Tight. Hot. She clenches around me like she's been waiting for this as long as I have.

"Look at me while I eat you."

She looks down. Our eyes lock. I curl my fingers and suck harder, and her thighs start to shake.

"Come on my tongue. Be good for me."

She breaks with a broken gasp, coming hard against my mouth, one hand slamming back against the door. I lick her through it until she's twitching and pushing at my shoulder.

"Too much—"

"Not yet." I stand, wipe my mouth with the back of my hand, and strip. Shirt. Belt. Pants. My cock springs free, thick and hard, and her eyes drop to it like she can't help herself.

"See something you like?"

"Yes."

"Then get on the bed. Middle. Legs open."

She moves. I climb over her, knees spreading her thighs wider, and line myself up. The head of my cock nudges her entrance. I don't push in yet.

"Eyes on me."

She locks on.

"You're still mine." I sink in one slow inch. Then another. Stretching her open until I'm buried deep and she's shaking under me. "Say it."

"I'm yours."

"Again."

"I'm yours, Julian. Fuck—I'm your wife—"

"Good girl." I bottom out and stay there, forehead against hers. "Fuck. You feel exactly like you should."

Then I move.

Deep. Steady. The kind of rhythm that makes the headboard knock and every thought leave my head except her. Every thrust punches a sound out of me. I brace one hand by her head and use the other to pin her wrist to the mattress.

"Take it. Take your husband's cock." My mouth finds her ear. "You look so fucking pretty when you're full of me. Look at you. Taking me like you were built for it."

"Julian—"

"I know, baby. I know. You're doing so good." I angle my hips and hit the spot that makes her back arch. "There. Feel that? That's mine. This cunt is mine."

She's going to come again. I can feel it building, the way she clamps down, the way her free hand digs into my back.

"Don't you dare go quiet," I tell her. "I want to hear you. Let me hear how good it feels."

She stops trying to be quiet. I fuck her through the noise, praising every broken sound, calling her good, calling her mine, telling her how wet she is, how tight, how perfect.

When my hand slides between us and rubs her clit, she shatters a second time, clenching around my cock so hard I curse and bury my face in her neck.

"Fuck—Eliza—I'm—"

"Come in me."

That does it. I drive deep and come hard, spilling into her, holding her down while I empty myself. She holds on. When I finally still, we're both breathing like we've run somewhere.

I ease out carefully, roll us so she's tucked against my chest, and pull the sheet up. Her hair is a mess. Her mouth is swollen. She looks wrecked and happy and mine.

I kiss the top of her head. Trace lazy patterns on her back. Outside, the city keeps moving. In here, for one night at least, everything feels exactly the way it should.
