Golden Buzzer

Ifollow his gaze.

Past the boards. Past the glass partition.

To the elevated seating section near the judges' table on the far side of the rink, where four figures are rising from their seats in the kind of coordinated motion that suggests they have been sitting there for a while.

Watching. Observing. Documenting every crossover, every spin, every lift, every second of the routine that I just performed under the assumption that the only audience was the man holding my waist and the empty arena surrounding us.

They are clapping.

Not politely. Not the restrained, obligatory applause of officials fulfilling a procedural requirement.

They are clapping with the genuine enthusiasm of people who just witnessed a performance that exceeded their expectations, their hands meeting with a rhythm that echoes through the vacant rink and reaches my ears with the disorienting impact of a sound that should not exist in a space I believed to be private.

Four judges.

My jaw is still open.

I turn to Raphael.

He is smirking. That particular, infuriating, devastatingly attractive smirk that I have come to recognize as the expression he wears when a plan he has been orchestrating in silence has reached its intended conclusion and he is allowing himself the satisfaction of watching it land.

"What did you do?" I ask, my voice pitched somewhere between accusation and awe.

He chuckles, the sound low and carrying the self-satisfied warmth of a man who has been holding a secret for days and is finally permitted to release it.

"I am someone who listens to gossip occasionally," he begins, his gray eyes holding mine with a directness that tells me the explanation is going to restructure my understanding of the last seventy-two hours.

"And a little birdy informed me that the figure skating auditions were moved.

The date that Vanessa and her entourage have been telling everyone, the one near Valentine's Day, is not the audition.

That is the first day of the competitive league.

The actual tryout window closed two weeks ago for general applicants. "

My eyes widen.

The information lands with the force of a revelation that recontextualizes every interaction I have had with Vanessa regarding figure skating.

The calculated cruelty of it steals my breath for a moment.

Not the insults. Not the hallway confrontations.

Not the name-calling or the social posturing.

Those are blunt instruments. This was surgical.

A deliberate sabotage of my athletic future disguised as casual campus gossip, executed with the kind of strategic precision that requires premeditation and the specific malice of a woman who viewed my presence on the ice as a threat worth eliminating through bureaucratic manipulation.

"I did not bring it up immediately," Raphael continues, his voice softening as his thumb traces an idle pattern against my hip, "because I wanted to see if you truly wanted to return to the sport.

Not out of spite. Not as a reaction to Vanessa's interference.

He meets my gaze with the steady intensity of a man who has been reading me since the day he arrived and has been waiting for me to finish reading myself.

My jaw has not recovered.

I am going to cry.

I am going to cry on this ice rink in my neon pink leggings in front of four professional judges and a French Alpha who orchestrated an entire covert audition because he believed in my talent before I remembered to believe in it myself.

The judges step onto the ice.

The lead judge, a woman with silver-streaked dark hair pulled into a sleek bun and glasses perched on her nose, reaches us first. Her smile is genuine, the kind that crinkles the corners of her eyes and tells me that whatever she is about to say is not a courtesy.

"That," she begins, gesturing between me and Raphael with her clipboard, "was exceptional."

The word lands on my ears and my brain refuses to accept it on the first attempt.

"Your technical execution is remarkably clean for someone who has been away from competitive skating for as long as your file indicates," she continues, consulting her tablet.

"The quad spin was textbook. Full rotation with controlled entry and exit.

Your blade work throughout the partner sequences demonstrated an edge quality that typically requires years of consistent practice to maintain, which tells me your muscle memory has preserved fundamentals that many active skaters struggle to sustain. "

The second judge, a younger woman with braids coiled atop her head and a university athletics polo beneath her coat, steps forward.

"Your posture during the lift sequences was outstanding.

The swan extension in particular showed a flexibility and core strength that exceeded our initial assessment benchmarks.

The arch was full. The hold was stable. The line from your fingertips through your spine to your extended leg was continuous and clean.
