Chapter 31
I was sitting on my living room floor staring daggers at a dead flower.
“Damn you! What do I have to do? What did I do differently last time? I said you deserve a second chance at bloom and I’ve said that again today, so what is it?” I huffed as I insanely argued with a dead flower.
Maybe I had nothing to do with that at all and all this mysticism got stuck into my head because of all Gran’s talk about the Moon Goddess and her granting guidance to those who seek her.
She talked all this witchy woo woo about that sacred land and how it was such a moving experience for those who went there.
Maybe none of this is relevant to me and I am talking to dead flowers for no reason. I sighed at myself. I picked up the dry sad little flower and cupped it between both my palms as I whispered to it hoping to will it back to life.
Maybe my self doubt has been a hindrance.
When I'd changed that last dead flower I was uninhibited by alcohol and I wasn’t doubting anything. I let it flow through me as natural. Same for Nealin Sr. medicated cream. It just came to me as an afterthought as though I had always known this.
I decided to grab a cup of water and I placed the dead flowers in there. I spoke into the water that these flowers would bloom once more and then I left it alone.
I went to do the dishes in the sink because tonight Jasper and Nealin would be back from training and I wanted the house presentable.
After that I went for a shower. The hot water felt good and I stayed in there longer than necessary.
I shouldn’t because although they have modern plumbing they do have to tap into wells all over the forest to gain access to plentiful waters and then the tanks warm that water to be bearable for us. I shouldn’t be wasteful.
I threw on a very comfortable large long sleeved sleep shirt with my sweat shorts since it was evening and I wouldn’t be going out again. I dried my hair with a towel as I walked towards my room but the towel dropped to the ground when I fumbled with myself for what I saw.
I ran over and knelt in front of that glass of water and I gaped at the healthy flowers. Holy Goddess of all....I have freaking super powers!
What the hell is this? What does this mean?!
I was freaking out and shocked and utterly speechless with myself. For some reason my eyes teared up at the sight of these newly bloomed flowers. I stared at them for a long time.
I have been meditating a lot in the privacy of my own room at night before bed and I was working on disciplining myself so I could become more clear minded and open to receiving messages if that were something true.
Now I had a whole new set of questions. I needed to see Gran. I had a feeling she would know something and I couldn’t wait to do it. I just couldn’t wait.
I dried my hair as best I could and switched into real clothes before I jogged over to the pack house. It wasn’t too late for visitors.
When I knocked Daisy, Diego’s little sister, was the one to open the door. “Hey!” She was surprised to see me.
“Hey Daisy, is gran anywhere?” I got straight to the point. She suddenly looked suspicious.
“Is everything okay?” She read my urgent vibes. I tried toning that down and I smiled at her and calmly told her I just had a generic question for her. She nodded and let me further inside.
“I assume she’s in the back lounge room. She crochet’s there at night” she told me like I didn’t used to live in this house and knew that information already. I thanked her and skipped off but I was stopped again not even ten seconds later.
“Mira?” I heard my name echo through the hall. It was Luna Leslie and she seemed pleasantly surprised to see me.
“Jasper isn’t back just yet” she warned me. I chuckled because it’s funny that that’s her assumption as to why I was here. It made sense of course.
“I’m actually here to see Gran” I fidgeted with my fingers. “I hope I’m not interrupting. I know it’s evening and I didn’t announce that I was coming by. Sorry” I stated sheepishly.
She waved me off with her well manicured nails noticeable to the eye. I wonder how that looked when she switched over to claws?
“Is there anything I can help you with?” She seemed curious now just as Daisy had been. Wolves are nosey creatures even if they pretend not to be.
“I just had a silly question for Gran, is it alright if I...” I trailed off, looking behind her to insinuate that I wanted to walk on. She said of course and stepped aside for me to continue to where I'd been headed in the first place.
“Gran?” my voice carried enough for her to hear.
“Over here” she called out. “Hi honey!” The small old woman dropped her crochet needles and stood to greet me. “What a pleasant surprise,” she grinned.
“Gran...I needed to talk to you” my expression got a tad more serious and hers followed suit. “I thought you might” she resumed sitting in her armchair and picking up her knitting. “You did?”
“You’ve been meditating. I know you visited the sacred grounds all three nights so I know you took my suggestion seriously, which I am very glad of” she told me without even looking at me.
Her wrinkled hands resumed their movements as she looped one piece of yarn over the other and pulled and circled her needles until another stitch was formed. My eyes watched her but my mouth continued speaking.
“I did, and I have...continued I mean. Gran, I don’t even know how to go about bringing this up without sounding crazy but-” I was cut short when a figure appeared suddenly.
My eyes shifted over to the tall taut male in the entrance. “I thought I heard your voice. What are you doing here?” Devran scowled at me.
“She’s here to see me. Mind your manors” his grandmother put him in his place. His jaw tightened with annoyance. “For what reason?” He asked.
“To chat. This old lady happens to like having visitors. It gets lonely in this big old house” she humored him but said nothing of actual value which I appreciated.
“And this is the company you seek?” He raised a brow at his Gran and her antics.
“Yes. Just because you didn’t see the value in this girl doesn’t mean I don’t. We speak often” she burned her grandson. I bit my cheek to hide my smile.
What I wanted to do was laugh but that wouldn’t go over well with Devran this angry. And he was very angry at that comment.
“Gran” he snapped, using his authoritative tone that wolves seem to respond to. “I’ll be leaving in a minute, Dev,” I decided to try and defuse this bomb before it got out of hand. It had no reason to.
“Whatever” he grumbled before walking off. I waited a minute to be sure he wasn’t within listening distance before I dared to speak again.
“I did something. I had done it once before but I happened to be...drunk at the time, so I wasn’t sure, but now I am sure” I rambled on. Gran resumed her knitting.
“Get on with it honey” she coaxed me along. I cleared my throat and found my conviction.
“I healed dead flowers into re-bloomed ones” I said out quickly in one breath. The needles stopped moving.
“And what else has happened” she urged me to continue as if knowing there was more. “I gave Nealin Sr. a plant based cream I made that significantly improved the look of his scars” I added.
She seemed to be thinking so I continued.
“The thing is, I just suddenly knew how to do that or what I would need to do that...the knowledge just came to me...but I remember you asking me how I knew the voice in my head was even my voice and now I wonder if I wasn’t the one who knew that information about the cream...
Maybe I was told but it was masked as my own voice so I didn’t even notice” I rambled on.
The woman’s face broke into a grin. “This is even better than I imagined. Thank you Moon Goddess” she praised the air above her head.
“What do you mean?!” I was so flustered and confused. Worried even. It’s a lot to process knowing you can do something like that. Supernatural things are hard to process and you feel crazy.
What if I hallucinated that and I'm actually just mentally ill and not magical. Oh Goddess I shouldn’t have said anything.
“I had a hunch but it was so far-fetched because this is unheard of nowadays. It’s something most have forgotten about due to how long it’s been since one last appeared” she told me without actually telling me.
“What? What is it?” I leaned forward to stare at the woman with wide eyes.
“I believe that you are a Mystic.”
I tilted my head at her not understanding the term. “We shouldn’t speak about this here. Not until we know for sure. I’ll come by in the morning and then we’ll talk” she told me.
I frowned at the thought of having to wait all night. I won’t be able to sleep. I had no choice but to agree and I left after that.
A Mystic...what is that?
As I walked out of the Pack house I was completely distracted by my thoughts that I walked right past someone without acknowledging them at all.
It wasn’t until a hand touched my shoulder that I even snapped out of my daze. “Mira” the deep voice came out gruffer than sand yet smoother than silk.
I turned and Devran’s beautiful blue eyes were already focused on me. With that dark black five o ’clock shadow his lips are always so pink in comparison. Shapely as ever.
“Yeah?” I asked with no malice in my tone. I had other things on my mind. He hesitated for a moment when he noticed my calm demeanor.
“Why were you actually here? I doubt it was to keep my grandmother company at this hour?” He investigated as he always does. I guess it’s because I'm human and he doesn’t trust me. Because I swear he doesn’t question people as often as he questions me.
“I had a question for her about a flower” I said honestly but only half honestly. His brows furrowed and he crossed his muscled arms over his firm chest. It’s hard not to look at.
“A flower?” He repeated in a questioning tone. “Yes.”
He stood in a wide stance and his aura exudes such confidence and dominance that is also hard to ignore.
“And what flower would that be?” He tested me. I placed my hands on my hips which brought his attention to my figure.
“How does that possibly matter? Is there a problem, Devran? Am I not allowed here or something?” I would rather know now if my presence is going to be a problem for him because I was sick of the standoffish questions and awkward air.
“You work in this house. How would it be a problem for you to be allowed in here? I just found it odd that you’d be here at this hour. You avoid me like the plague so I’m surprised you’d even come at a time where you knew I would be around” he challenged me.
“I’m not dwelling. I'm here for someone else. Why should it matter if you’re here?” I played it so cool. He thinks he is so important. I enjoyed knocking him down a peg. By his angry expression I knew the deed was done.
“You’ve gotten really brave around here. I remember when you wouldn’t stand up for yourself now I can’t get you to stop with the irksome attitude I seem to receive from you” he tried annoying me.
“You changed me,” I told him honestly. He seemed taken back by that statement. Before either of us could say anything else the front door swung open and Jasper hollered out, “Honey, I’m home.”
His silly grin dropped when he noticed me and Devran mid conversation. “Hey Sunshine” he looked at me sheepishly.
I knew he felt just as bad as I did for the mini fight we had before he left. It made me walk over and throw my arms around him in a hug. “Sorry for before” we said at the same time then laughed.
“Uh, hey Dev, what’s up?” Jasper asked his friend.
“Just asking your girlfriend what she was doing in my house at this hour” he shrugged like he wasn’t just grilling me hard. “What are you doing here sunshine?”
He was more curious than interrogative.
“I just had a quick question for Gran. I was on my way out. Is Nealin back too?” I asked him. His expression flickered but I don’t know what it was because it left too quickly.
“No, we left separately,” he told me. I thought nothing of it.
“Well, if you’re done with your interrogation I would like to go now” I turned back to Devran to see what he’d say now. He just scowled at me and dismissed me.
“Wait, since you’re here, stay. I missed ya” Jasper grabbed me before I could go. I glanced at Dev then back at him. I wasn’t sure that was a good idea.
Then I thought about the torture of waiting until morning for Gran to answer all my questions about what I did to those flowers and I decided I needed the distraction.
“Okay” I nodded, waiting for Dev to protest. He didn’t. He just walked off.
