Chapter 40
Chapter Forty
K aty and Anna were up a little before nine the next morning and headed to the kitchen to make coffee. No one else was up yet and as they reached the first floor, they both heard the front door close. Katy ran to the window.
“Anna, isn’t that the guy that Sami was talking to last night?” Katy asked.
Anna took a look and wasn’t sure until he turned their way before getting into his car. There was no doubt.
“That’s him. Looks like Sami had a very good night last night.”
This seemed to please Katy. “Good. Maybe I won’t need to worry about her with Billy anymore. I wonder if it will turn into anything?”
Anna had her doubts. “You never know. Might be a fun fling for the next few weeks. We’ll all be heading home after that. Hudson said Zach lives here on Nantucket.”
A minute later, the front door opened, and Lauren and Eloise walked in.
“Did you pass anyone on your way in?” Katy asked.
“You mean like the guy Sami was dancing with last night?” Eloise said. “I take it he spent the night?”
“Looks that way,” Anna agreed. “We saw him leave. He didn’t see us, though.”
An hour later, Sami was the last person to make her way downstairs. She nodded at everyone and went to the kitchen, poured herself a cup of coffee and sliced an onion bagel and put it in the toaster. The guys were outside on the deck, and all the girls and the production staff were in the kitchen.
Once Sami’s bagel was toasted, she added cream cheese, then brought everything to the big marble island where Anna, Katy and Honey were sitting. Lauren and Eloise were close by at the round kitchen table. They could still easily hear the conversation.
Lauren wasn’t sure if they were going to ask Sami about Zach or not, but after a few minutes of idle chitchat about what a fun night they’d had, Katy brought it up.
“So we came downstairs this morning just as Zach was heading out the front door. He didn’t see us, though. I guess you two hit it off?”
Sami’s eyes widened and a flush spread across her cheeks. “You could say that. He seems really nice. We’re going out again tonight. One of his friends plays in a band and we’re going to go hear them play.” She smiled. “It definitely turned my mood around. I’m not expecting it to be anything serious, but it’s fine and fun.”
Katy looked happy to hear that Sami had plans to go out with Zach again. “That’s awesome. Have fun.”
“Do the guys know that Zach stayed here last night?” Sami asked.
Anna shook her head. “I don’t think so. Unless they were up when you came home last night?”
“No, all the lights were off when we got home. We took a long walk on the beach and sat on the front deck for a while before we headed inside. If you don’t mind, please don’t say anything to the guys.”
Katy smiled. “Of course. My lips are sealed.”
The sun came out strong and they spent most of the day on the beach. The guys got out the games and they played horseshoes and then bocce. It was girls against guys and then they mixed up the teams. It made for a fun day and everyone got along great. They broke for lunch, and the catering team put out platters of sandwiches and watermelon slices.
Everyone was tired from going out the night before and they decided to just order pizzas, watch movies, and have an early night. Lauren noticed that once everyone ate, and they settled in the living room to watch TV, that everyone paired off and all the couples sat together. Except for Sami, who was out with Zach. The guys knew she was going out with the guy from the Chicken Box, but they didn’t know that he’d spent the night.
Lauren and the production team headed home around ten. It was a long day, so she didn’t feel bad about taking Friday night off to have dinner with her parents. And she’d see them the next day at the food festival, too. Lauren would be working, but she’d still be able to chat and visit with her parents. They were taking the ferry over in the afternoon and had booked a room with Lisa. Lauren was glad they’d be staying just a few doors down. She hadn’t seen them since Christmas. She talked to her mother every few days, though.
