Chapter 4
CHAPTER FOUR
Kendall
“Your garbage can is still out front.” I keep my eyes closed and ignore the nagging voice of my neighbor. I don’t have to look to know she is standing at the fence peering over at me like me not rushing out to the curb the minute the garbage truck pulled away is the worst crime.
“Hello?” She makes a second attempt to gain my attention. “It’d be a shame if it got run over,” she adds.
Living on the corner opposite her allows her to walk up the sidewalk right next to my house and see into the backyard. The fact that I do not own the property makes it hard to change things. I also don’t want to plug money into something that isn’t mine. But my God the woman drives me insane.
“Haven’t we had this discussion before?”
“We have,” I say without opening my eyes to look at her. Instead I continue to lay on my lounger enjoying the feel of the warm sun on my face. “I didn’t care then, and I still do not care.”
I swear I hear the sound of her growling, and the corner of my mouth tips upward into a smile.
Call it childish but I truly enjoy pissing her off.
She strolls around the neighborhood like she owns it all herself.
She doesn’t just target me, but every single person on our little circle drive.
She watches us all out her front window with a pair of binoculars, not even trying to hide her intrusive behavior.
She calls the cops on everyone, listens to her scanner so she can know everything that happens on the calls.
She is a royal bitch, and have a mentioned before that she married her uncle.
Yes, that is right, her aunt’s ex-husband became her new hubby.
The girls and I came up with the greatest little name for her.
UF, uncle fucker, yep we said it, and it stuck.
“I’ll just move it myself,” she huffs and without moving I knock her down one last notch.
“It you enter my yard and touch my garbage can, then proceed to walk in the direction of my home, I will press charges. Be reminded of that pretty little no trespassing sign out front, that is a present I purchased solely for you my dear. So choose wisely.”
“Has anyone ever told you that you are a menace?”
“No, that is a new one.” Not reacting is the very best form of action. It seems to make her mad, which I secretly love doing.
“How about a bitch?” she asks and that makes me smile.
I lift my hand into the air and point in her direction. “Yep, heard that one before, and I love it.”
“You love being a bitch?”
“To you, yes, I truly do.” I am met with silence and I know that I’ve reached my goal.
I have gotten beneath her skin and she is boiling over.
I try not to laugh when I hear the sound of her stomping away and she mumbles profanities in my direction.
I think I secretly strive to piss her off at least once daily.
But if she doesn’t like it she does have the choice to stay the hell out of my business.
It’s no one’s fault but her own that she is a nosy asshole.
“Knock, knock.” I lift my head and peer in the opposite direction, toward the back door of my house. Jillian and Sophie step outside, and are both smiling. “What did you do to Cruella de Vil now?”
“Uh ya know,” I sigh. “I left my garbage can in the ditch.”
“You’re the devil,” Jillian gasps playfully covering her mouth.
“And when she called me a bitch I smiled with pure joy and pretty much thanked her for the compliment,” I say with a shrug as they both join me on my patio.
“Doesn’t she know by now that calling you a bitch is liking crowning the new queen. She needs to step up her game if she truly wants to compete,” Sophie plays along.
“She will never survive this battle. I would have to care what she thinks to have any of her insults burn me.” I sit up and turn my legs to the side as they sit down in the two empty chairs. “What brings you two to Montgomery?”
“Shopping for a new hairstylist,” Jillian says and Sophie glares at her.
“Are you still hung up on the idea that Delaney and Gia boinked Finn back in high school?”
“Boinked is such a weird word.”
“Would you rather I said tickled his pickle?”
“Oh my God, you and Adley are ridiculous.” Sophie makes a gagging noise which makes me laugh. I start to make a comment about her gagging and she stops me by pointing and glaring.
I hold up my hands in surrender and again Jillian covers her mouth to hide her laughter.
Sophie hasn’t always had the best luck with guys, but Finn and her are so good together.
The way it happened was a little crazy. But honestly, I think we all saw it coming when they came up with the weird fake dating plan. It backfired, but in the best way.
“I would be fine with the fact that they had a little whatever in high school. But what I’m not fine with is Gia asking me if he still does this thing with his hips that drives a girl crazy.”
“Well,” I slide forward acting very interested, “does he?”
“I think I’m going to go find your neighbor so I can be her sidekick and finish what she started. I’ll hold you down, and she can do whatever.”
“That sounds a little too kinky for my taste, besides I’m not into girls. However, I do think you are beautiful. Her not so much. I’d do you though for sure.”
She only stares at me and though I want to laugh I don’t. I am pretty great at playing a part, I can hold my cool on most occasions and it’s a little hard to tell if I’m lying or not. At least that’s what I am told.
“We can even keep it a secret, not tell the others. I wouldn’t want them getting jealous.”
“How’s Aaron?”
“Why don’t you ask him?”
“Because I’m asking you,” she adds, trying her best to break my concentration.
“Maybe Chelsea from the other night is secretly a wild girl and she has him tied up in his basement riding him like a bull.”
“And you are okay with that?”
“I am perfectly okay with that,” I assure her and feel a spike of adrenaline rush through me. “He can have half the ladies in Hudson riding him if that’s what he wants.”
“Are you two done?” Jillian asks. “Because this is getting a little uncomfortable for me.”
Sophie and I hold on to our moment, staring at each other and she is the first to break.
“Fine, whatever,” she says, waving her hand before flopping back in the chair.
“And yes, he does do a very delicious thing with his hips, but I’d never tell Gia that.
Honestly every single time I see her and her sister all I want to do is punch them in the throat.
Me finding a new hairdresser is more for their safety and not my sanity.
I think it’s the best option for me, if I want to stay out of jail. ”
Jilly snickers and I say nothing just hold out my hand for a fist bump. To which Sophie rolls her eyes but still gives me the response I’m requesting. I make an explosion sound and finally, she laughs.
I love my girls. I may be the last one to fall head over heels for any man, but I will admit, my ladies are my weakness. Mess with them, and I’m ready to lay it all on the table without a second thought. They each mean the world to me, they are my people.
I need them and for that I have no shame.
