Chapter 3 #2

I came back out in a fresh pair of elven pants, blue this time, and Simon switched places with me. Knowing I wouldn’t be able to sleep without him, I polished a few spots on our eggs. When I made it to the last one it started to rock.

“It’s going to be a long night. Once one egg starts they go down like dominos,” my dragon chimed into my thoughts. “We should order a pizza or lots of them.”

I placed the order and then spent the rest of the time my alpha was in the shower pacing around our eggs.

The first one that rocked was making a scratching noise by the time Simon returned from his shower.

He wore a pair of checkerboard plaid pajama pants and no shirt.

He leapt into the nest with ease and his eyes lit up as soon as he heard the sound.

It was slow going at first and we dozed off and on for a few hours.

I woke up to Simon saying ‘ouch!’ He’d fallen asleep too close to the rocking egg and got hit in the head with a piece of shell that was kicked out of the way to let out a little peachy, fleshy foot.

The baby’s toes crinkled in the air as if he waved to us.

Slowly but surely the baby headbutted his way out.

Baby dragon shifters were born incredibly strong to break free of their eggs but slowly lost some of that strength as it was consumed by the task.

Soon I was wiping off the left over eggshell of a little baby with pointed ears like mine and big grass green eyes that reminded me of so many eyes I’d seen back home in the Other World.

“Barbatos,” I whispered to him. We’d picked out four names that could easily be modified if needed upon hatching.

His was a name smash up of an old bear name and an elven name.

It was one of my favorites that we had come up with and we had decided it would go to the first baby who managed to make their way out of their egg.

By the time Barbatos was settled in for his first nursing session, the three other eggs all had a hand or a foot sticking out of the egg. Feeling the commotion over the family link, Creg flew over and helped Simon keep an eye on them while I rocked and nursed Barbatos.

The next baby to make their way out was a little girl who looked a lot like her sire. I wiped her off and held her to my chest along side of her brother.

“Valtana,” I whispered to her as if it was something she’d need to remember.

The last two, little boys who looked almost like identical twins, except one had honey-colored eyes and the other one had my green eyes, came out at the same time as if they had spent their time inside their eggs coordinating their grand entrance.

Pieces of eggshell flew in every direction as Creg and Simon rushed to clean them up.

The ‘twins’ wailed and wailed until they too were placed on my chest, swapping places with those who escaped their shelly prisons first.

“Siron and Vimon,” I whispered to them as Simon settled in next to me.

Baby Barbatos and Valtana were already out cold.

For most of our kids a full belly and skin to skin contact had been enough.

I couldn’t stop smiling at our little hatchlings.

Not all dragon eggs hatched one after the next but in our few experiences with them it had always happened that way.

Once the pizza came, Creg ate a few slices and went home to give us alone time to bond with our babies.

We curled up with them between the protective circles of our bodies.

Simon stroked my hair as he always did right after I gave birth.

The eggs might’ve been laid months ago, but we’d done this just often enough that his brain related newborns with me needing extra comfort and affection.

“Are you feeling better now, alpha?” I yawned.

My eyelids hung heavy, but I didn’t want to stop staring at our four perfect hatchlings.

“I am. I’m still worried. I think I’ll worry about them forever, but now I’m thinking that maybe it’s good timing. Our littlest ones and his first little one might grow up together. They can be friends and he’ll have more reasons that ever to come around.”

“I hope so,” I grinned. “I love you.”

“I love you too, but you need to get some sleep,” Simon said.

“You do too.”

“You first. I’ll guard while you sleep. They’ll wake you up in a bit because they’re hungry. Sadly for them, I don’t lactate and will be zero help in that department until, if or when, you decide they can have bottles.”

“I’ll teach you that trick one day, but I’ve fed four before and I’ll do it this time. I’m lucky that way. As long as they keep eating the faucet still works” I chuckled, letting my eyes drop closed while Simon’s soft fingers lulled me to sleep, stroking my hair.

Hello and thank you for reading!

I hope you enjoyed revisiting Voron and Simon as much as I did! And, yep, eventually, we will find out who Ignatio responded too.
