Chapter 42

I lie in bed, staring at my phone. Across the room, the glow from Nate’s cell illuminates the side of his face. It’s weird to be in the same dark room as him, separate beds, messaging another man. I just can’t think about what a mess this entire situation is—from the fake dating, to the real feelings, to the whole You’ve Got Mail thing.

It’s a lot.

So best not to dwell on it.

But I am curious who he’s texting.

Strike that thought from my mind.

Nate can text whoever he wants, just like I can.

@worth_traveling_to:

How are you?

@girl_sees_the_world:

Good. I just pulled off a huge event for work. It started off rough, but we rallied and had an amazing finish. My client was really happy.

@worth_traveling_to:

I have no doubt you were amazing.

@girl_sees_the_world:

It wasn’t just me. I had help.

This is probably where I should mention to Mr. International that I kissed the help I had.

No.

I can kiss another man.

It’s not like we’re in a relationship or made promises and commitments to each other.

Yet.

So, while the kiss was amazing, it was a mistake not worth mentioning.

@girl_sees_the_world:

But I’m glad everything ended well. It makes the flight home tomorrow way more enjoyable.

@worth_traveling_to:

I’m also flying home from my work trip tomorrow. I wish we were on the same flight.

@girl_sees_the_world:

Maybe we are and don’t even know it.

That actually just blew my mind. What if we are on the same flight?

@worth_traveling_to:

I doubt it. But just in case, let's keep our identities a secret a little while longer so our first official date isn’t on an airplane.

@girl_sees_the_world:

Works for me.

Especially since I tend to look puffy and horrible whenever I fly.

@girl_sees_the_world:

We’ve waited this long. What’s a few more days?

@worth_traveling_to:

But just a few. I don’t think I can keep this up much longer.

Nate turns off his phone and plugs it in.

I do the same.

We both adjust to a comfortable position, and then there’s silence.

“Carly?”

“Yeah?”

“I meant what I said earlier about keeping an open mind.”

“I know.”

“Goodnight. Sweet dreams.”

I hear the smile in his voice, and I smile too because we both know my dreams will be all about him.
