Chapter 3 - Chayce

“W e flew over the entire town and surrounding woods. Neither of us saw anything that might be making those prints,” Deakon informs me, frustration evident in his voice.

Deakon and Adyr are not only deputies but they are also my brothers. Along with Brady, the four of us are the highest on the food chain, especially in Padston. It’s one of the reasons no one gives us any shit. Even in their shifted forms, they can’t compete with a dragon.

I give Deakon and Adyr a nod in acknowledgment, heaving a frustrated sigh.

“All right,” I tell them. “Let’s make a report so it’s on record. I drove by both construction sites last night and didn’t see anything out of place. Maybe take a ride over to pack land and see if they can show us where they found the prints.”

My thoughts drift through various ideas of where to start looking for whoever is trespassing on the wolf lands.

Coming out of my head, it takes me a moment to realize my brothers are staring at me, waiting patiently.

“Sorry. Deakon, you do the report. Adyr, you come with me. We will head over to see Crispin D’Angelo. I also want to do a more thorough inspection of the casino and baseball stadium.”

Rising to my feet, I toss the resumes I was going through onto the desk. What’s a few more hours of delay going to hurt?

I am struggling to find several candidates to interview. Not only do we need some deputies with experience, but knowledge of paranormals would be an added bonus.

Pocketing my phone and grabbing my keys, Adyr follows me outside without a word.

All of my brothers know that I am struggling with the hiring process. Why the mayor’s office isn’t handling this is a mystery.
