Chapter 60

Sloane

W hen I get to school on Monday, I can't wait to fill Kurt in on everything, and I suspect that's the reason he's there earlier than me for a change. "Hey!" I smile when I see his eager expression.

"Oh my gosh, you have to tell me how the heck you got Evan Dando to come to prom!"

I chuckle as I sit in my seat, dropping my backpack to the floor. I fill Kurt in on everything, and he is hanging on my every word. When I'm done, he sits back in his chair and runs his hand through his dark hair. "Too bad about Tameka tagging along."

"I was embarrassed at first because I didn’t want Evan to think I was scared to be with him alone, but he was cool about it," I say as I open my backpack and fish out my French book and notebook. "My mom said she thought about taking her home, but didn’t say anything." I pause, then laugh, "I think my mom was worried Evan might try something if I was by myself."

Kurt gets a pained look on his face. "Yeah, about that…" I cock my head to the side, trying to figure out what he means. I look at him and narrow my eyes as he leans in and quietly says, "Amber is telling people that you slept with him and that’s why he went to prom with you."

I lean back in surprise. My eyes involuntarily open as far as they can. "What?!" I say a little too loud, then lean toward him again. "I did not sleep with Evan. I haven't slept with anyone !" I practically hiss.

"I didn't think you would have," Kurt says with sympathetic eyes.

"How would she even know anyway? It's not like we're friends, or I would have confided in her." My blood boils, and my heart races. "Besides, just because she would do something like that, doesn't mean I would." I'm so angry. I feel like I could spit nails. "That's probably the reason I've never been asked to a dance, because I don't do that!" I cannot believe this. I have an amazing thing happen to me, and this popular cheerleader is trying to soil a perfectly sweet night.

"I'm sorry to upset you," Kurt says, "but I thought you'd want to know."

"No, I do, thank you," I assure him. "I really appreciate your friendship." Just then Amber walks into the room, and I can't even look at her, so I busy myself by doodling in my notebook.

"Bonjour classe!" Madame Carney says as she walks into the room and shuts the door behind her as the bell rings. She walks to the front of the room. Her face alight with a smile. "J'espère que vous avez passé un excellent week-end!" I wonder if Madame Carney knows how excellent my weekend was, but I don't have to wonder for long because she adds, "Sloane, parlez- nous de votre week-end." She looks so giddy as she tells me to tell the class about my weekend.

I start off speaking French, but mercifully, she says, "C'est bon," she waves her hand. "En anglais." Thank God, I can tell the story in English.

I give the very abbreviated version of this rather long story and pointedly look at Amber when I say, "Apparently there are some rumors spreading about how I got Evan to go to prom with me, but he was a complete gentleman."

Amber shifts uncomfortably in her chair. The old me would have left it at that, but I've had about all I can take, so I decide to be bold again. "Amber, I would really appreciate it if you would stop telling people that I slept with my prom date, because that couldn't be further from the truth. It may be hard for you to believe, but sometimes people are just good and want to do something nice for someone else with no strings attached."

Amber's face turns red, and her mouth is agape. I catch Ramsey out of my right eye, and she gives me a big smile and a wink. I smile and lean back, finally taking a breath as I see Kurt's proud face immediately to my right.

Madame Carney pretends like she didn't hear that last part. "That's so wonderful, Sloane! You deserve that. You are such a good person, and I'm so glad Evan was able to take you to your prom."

Take that, stupid Amber Gates. Sometimes, nice girls finish first!
