Chapter 10 #2
"Ready for the surprise?" Tobi asked, scooping Yousuf up and settling him on one of the tall stools at the kitchen island. The boy's feet dangled, swinging with excitement.
"Yes! What is it? Can I see now?"
"I'll go get it." Tyr headed to the living room where they'd left the supplies.
"Okay, close your eyes!" Tobi instructed, as Tyr returned, the box tucked under one arm.
Yousuf squeezed his eyes shut tight, bouncing a little. "What is it?"
"Keep them closed," Tobi sang out as he arranged items on the counter. "No peeking!"
Tyr leaned against the doorframe, arms crossed, fighting back a smile as his brother lined up the supplies with military precision.
Food coloring, baking soda, vinegar - each item placed just so.
The plastic sheeting came out last, ready to protect the counter from whatever mess they were about to create.
"Alright," Tobi announced grandly. "Open your eyes!"
Yousuf's eyes flew open, darting between the assembled items with growing curiosity. "What is all this stuff?"
"We," Tobi declared, practically vibrating with excitement, "are going to build a volcano! And then make it explode!"
"A volcano?" Yousuf's eyes went wide. "A real one?"
"Well, sort of." Tobi was already reaching for the Play-Doh. "We'll build it with this, and then use special ingredients to make it erupt. With lava and everything!"
Tyr couldn't help chuckling at the matching expressions of pure delight on both their faces. His ancient vampire brother looked every bit as thrilled as the six-year-old about their upcoming experiment.
"Can we make it big?" Yousuf asked, already reaching for the Play-Doh. "With lots of lava?"
"Oh, we're going to make it awesome," Tobi assured him, spreading out the plastic sheeting. "And wait till you see what happens when we add the glitter..."
Tyr strolled forward and picked up the printout from the counter. "Why don't I read the directions while you two artists handle the construction?"
"Yeah!" Yousuf bounced on his stool. "Can we make it really tall?"
"Hold up there, buddy." Tobi ruffled the boy's hair. "How about some milk first? Can't do proper science on an empty stomach."
While Tobi got Yousuf settled with his milk, Tyr grabbed two Cokes from the fridge. He popped the tabs, sliding one across to his brother.
"Okay, according to this..." Tyr held up the instructions. "First we need to build a base from the green Play-Doh."
Tobi and Yousuf dug into the containers, squishing the modeling compound between their fingers. Yousuf's tongue poked out in concentration as he helped Tobi flatten the clay into a circular base.
"Now what?" Tobi asked, hands covered in green.
"Start building up the sides." Tyr demonstrated with his hands. "Cone shape, but leave a deep well in the center for our 'magma chamber.'"
"Like this?" Yousuf pressed more of the colorful clay onto the sides, his small fingers carefully smoothing the surface.
"Perfect." Tyr nodded approvingly. "Make sure those walls are thick - they need to hold the liquid without collapsing."
They worked steadily, Tobi and Yousuf shaping the volcano while Tyr called out measurements from the instructions. The finished structure stood about a foot tall, with sturdy walls and a deep central chamber.
"Now we need to texture the outside," Tyr read. "Make it look more like real rock."
Yousuf's face brightened. "I know!" He slid off the stool and went to a kitchen drawer, and grabbed a fork. He clambered back up onto the stool, using the tines to scratch irregular patterns into the surface. "See? Like a real mountain!"
"You bet!" Tobi stepped back to admire their handiwork. "We've got a real Mount Vesuvius here."
"What's Mount Veh-suv-i-uhs?" Yousuf looked up from where he was still adding texture to the Play-Doh volcano.
"It's a famous volcano in Italy," Tyr explained, keeping his tone light. "A very long time ago, it erupted and covered a whole city called Pompeii."
"Really?" Yousuf's eyes widened. "What happened to the people?"
Tobi shot Tyr a quick glance before answering carefully. "They had time to leave the city. And now it's like a big museum - scientists found the whole city preserved under the volcanic ash, so we can see how people lived back then."
"Wow." Yousuf traced a finger along their creation. "Was that what made all the dinosaurs die?"
Tyr caught his brother's eye, seeing his own uncertainty reflected there. Despite their long existence, neither had actually been around for that particular event.
"You know what?" Tyr shrugged. "We're not really sure about that one. I think it might have been a different kind of disaster - maybe an asteroid hitting Earth?"
"Yeah," Tobi agreed, running a hand through his hair. "The dinosaur thing was way before our... uh, before anyone's time. Could have been volcanos, I guess."
Tyr glanced at the fossilized dinosaur-shaped chicken nuggets still sitting on the counter, and a slow grin spread across his face. He snatched up the plate and brought it over.
"Hey, looks like my brother's cooking disaster might be useful after all." He held up one of the rock-hard nuggets. "What do you think? Perfect volcanic boulders, right?"
Yousuf clapped his hands together in excitement. "Yeah! Can we stick them in?"
"Here." Tyr pressed one of the hardened nuggets into the volcano's slopes. "See how it looks like it's embedded in the rock?"
"Cool!" Yousuf grabbed another nugget-turned-boulder and carefully pushed it into place. "Like real rocks that got stuck when the lava cooled!"
Tobi snorted. "Well, at least my culinary skills are good for something."
They worked together, embedding the nuggets at different angles around the volcano's surface. The irregular shapes actually enhanced the mountain's realistic appearance, making it look more like natural rock formation than smooth Play-Doh.
"See?" Tyr stepped back to admire their handiwork. "Sometimes mistakes turn into happy accidents."
"Now it looks like a real mountain," Yousuf declared, adding the last nugget-boulder with careful precision. "With real rocks and everything!"
Tobi picks up the instruction sheet. "Okay, hang on, let me get this part done.
Tobi grabbed the plastic water bottle and carefully poured its contents into a glass. With an exaggerated wink at Yousuf, he said, "Waste not, want not!"
Yousuf giggled, his feet swinging against the stool rungs as he watched Tobi work.
Following the printed instructions with unusual care, Tobi measured out the baking soda, pouring it into the now-empty bottle. He added a squirt of dish soap, then held up the food coloring bottles.
"What color should our lava be?" Tobi asked, waggling the bottles enticingly.
"Red!" Yousuf bounced on his stool, nearly toppling over in excitement. "Like real lava!"
"Red it is." Tobi added several drops of the crimson dye, then sprinkled in a pinch of gold glitter. The mixture sparkled under the kitchen lights as he held the bottle up for them to see. He then carefully positioned the bottle in the center of their Play-Doh creation.
"That's called the caldera," Tyr explained, pointing to where the bottle nestled in the volcano's mouth. "It's the main vent where the lava comes out during an eruption."
Tobi poured vinegar into a glass measuring cup, and held it up, his eyes sparkling with anticipation. "Ready for some volcanic action?"
"Yeah!" Yousuf practically vibrated off the stool, bouncing from foot to foot. His excitement was contagious - even Tyr found himself grinning as he positioned his phone to capture the moment.
"Layla's going to want to see this," Tyr said, making sure he had a good angle on both the volcano and Yousuf's face.
"Okay, scientist Yousuf." Tobi handed the boy the measuring cup. "On the count of three, pour this right into the center. Ready?"
Yousuf nodded vigorously, gripping the cup with both hands.
"One... two... three!"
Yousuf tipped the vinegar into the volcano's mouth. For a split second, nothing happened. Then the mixture began to bubble and foam, red "lava" streaming down the slopes. Sparkles caught the light as it cascaded down, making the eruption sparkle and shine.
"It's exploding!" Yousuf screamed in delight, jumping up and down. "Look at all the lava!"
The reaction continued, foam spilling over the sides and around the chicken-nugget boulders. Yousuf's laughter echoed through the kitchen as he watched the "lava" flow, his face a picture of pure joy.
"This is the best volcano ever!" he declared, eyes wide with wonder as the last bits of foam trickled down the sides.
Tobi grabbed the box of brownie mix from the counter, waving it triumphantly. "And now, for our next scientific experiment - brownies!"
Yousuf's eyes lit up. "I love brownies! Can I help?"
"Of course!" Tobi flipped the box over, squinting at the instructions. "Okay, we need... a bowl, eggs, oil, and... what are these beater things?"
"Oh! I know where those are!" Yousuf scrambled down from his stool and pulled open a lower drawer. He emerged with an electric hand mixer, the cord trailing behind him. "Mama uses these when she makes cookies."
Tyr watched in amusement as his brother stared at the mixer like it was some alien technology. "Right. And how exactly does this work?"
"There's buttons," Yousuf pointed helpfully. "But I'm not allowed to use it by myself."
"Bowl first," Tyr suggested, opening cabinets at random. "Where would your mom keep the big mixing bowls?"
"That one!" Yousuf pointed to a cabinet near the stove. "The glass ones."
Tobi rummaged through the pantry. "Oil... we need oil. There's olive oil and something called vegetable oil. Which one?"
"The box says vegetable oil," Tyr read over his shoulder.
"There's a difference?"
"Apparently." Tyr shrugged. "Don't ask me, I haven't cooked since the 1400s."
They gathered their supplies on the counter - bowl, oil, eggs that Yousuf carefully carried from the fridge, and the mysterious electric beaters.
