Chapter 24 #3

"Oh, but it gets better," he said, his eyes sparkling.

"Lady Alyssa was there too - she nearly collapsed against the wall, laughing so hard she could barely breathe.

And Margot just sailed past Lord Damien like he was a doorman, demanding to be shown to her grandson's quarters immediately and asking where the linens were kept. "

"And Charles!" Tobi shook his head. "You should have seen his face! It was priceless."

"Charles is very... traditional," Tyr explained to Beth. "He's been running the NYC Residence for decades. Think of the most proper British butler you've ever seen, then multiply it by a thousand."

"Watching them try to out-organize each other is better than any entertainment we could pay for," Tyr added. "They're both absolutely convinced their way is the only proper way to run a vampire household."

Beth frowned, thinking that over. "But if she came here to manage the Residence, she left her grandson back in New York City?"

Tobi's shoulders shook with barely suppressed laughter. Tyr pressed his lips together, clearly fighting to maintain his composure.

"Oh no," Tobi managed between snickers. "Margot informed Adele they were coming here."

"Informed," Tyr emphasized, his blue eyes dancing with amusement. "Not asked. Not requested. Just stated it as fact."

"And they did!" Tobi spread his hands in a 'what can you do' gesture. "Adele had the Pledges pack up her household within a week. Didn't even bother to argue."

Beth tried to imagine the scene - the elegant vampire being essentially ordered to relocate by a human woman. Her new vampire hearing picked up Tobi muttering something that sounded suspiciously like "probably safer that way" under his breath.

Beth settled more comfortably against the headboard, fascinated by these glimpses into vampire society. "So Margot just... took over?"

"Actually," Tyr said, his expression growing more serious, "Margot and Adele see eye to eye on most things.

They're both incredibly strong, independent women who know exactly what they want.

Adele was Turned in the 1920s," he explained.

"It was an amazing era for women breaking free of social constraints, and she embraced that spirit completely. "

"She's Swiss." Tobi added, his tone deeply respectful. "She was part of the Resistance during World War II, helping people escape Nazi Germany. Even as a vampire, she refused to stand idle while such atrocities occurred."

"That must have been incredibly dangerous," Beth said.

"It was," Tyr agreed. "But Adele has never been one to let fear stop her from doing what's right. She and Margot share that quality - that absolute certainty in their convictions."

Tobi nodded from his position at the foot of the bed. "You should see them together at the planning meetings. They're terrifyingly efficient. Between Adele's decades of tactical experience and Margot's organizational skills, nothing gets past them."

Beth could picture it - the elegant vampire and the commanding human woman, both refusing to be limited by anyone's expectations of them. No wonder they worked so well together.

"Lord Damien and Charles probably threw a celebration when she announced she was coming here instead," Tobi added with another snicker

Tobi stretched languidly and slid off the foot of the bed. "Well, I'll leave you two alone." His eyes sparkled with mischief as he backed toward the door. "I'll be in my chambers if you need anything."

"Speaking of which..." Tyr reached over to the wall beside the bed and tugged on an ornate twisted cord Beth hadn't noticed before. The braided tassel swung gently, catching the dim light.

Beth blinked in surprise. "Is that... actually a bell pull? Like in Downton Abbey?"

Tyr shrugged, looking a bit sheepish. "We're kind of old. Some things are harder to let go than others. One pull summons me, two pulls for Tobi."

"And because shouting down the hallway would be unseemly," Tobi added in a perfect imitation of Margot's crisp tones before disappearing through the doorway.

Tyr reached for the bedside table and picked up Beth's phone and purse.

"I took the liberty of programming Derek's number in your contacts.

If you need anything, from blood to information, and all you have to do is call.

We'll give you his college and work schedules so you'll know where he is at all times. "

Beth accepted the familiar items, surprised by how different they felt to her enhanced sense of touch. The leather of her purse held subtle variations in texture she'd never noticed before, while her phone's screen seemed almost too bright to her sensitive eyes.

Tyr's hand covered hers, his touch gentle. "Are you really okay?"

Beth met his concerned gaze, taking in every subtle shade of blue in his eyes. A smile curved her lips as she realized that despite all the changes - the transformation, her new abilities, the entire supernatural world she'd entered - she felt more right than she had in a long time.

"Yes," she said softly. "I really am."

Tyr shifted his weight, an oddly human gesture for a vampire. His fingers traced abstract patterns on the bed covers.

"So..." he began, oddly hesitant.

"Stop." Beth caught his hand in hers, marveling at how she could detect the subtle variations in his skin temperature. "I'm fine with all of this. No regrets." She squeezed his fingers, smiling at him. "How could I regret being alive? Being here with you? Still having Whisper?"

Tyr's shoulders relaxed slightly, though tension still lined his face. "I should tell you... I spoke with Lord Damien weeks ago. Asked his permission to Turn you, if you were willing." His gaze met hers. "I just hadn't found the right moment to have that conversation with you."

A laugh bubbled up from Beth's chest, surprising them both with its musical quality.

"That's funny, because I actually talked to Douglas weeks ago about what it's like being married to an immortal.

" Her smile widened at Tyr's startled expression.

"I wanted to understand how a human handles being with someone who'll outlive them by centuries. "

"You did?" Tyr sounded both wondering and relieved.

"I did." Beth traced her fingers along his palm, following the lifelines that would now stretch into eternity. "Though I guess that particular concern is moot now."

Beth settled more comfortably against the mattress, letting her fingers trail over the fabrics. She still marveled at how her new sense of sight and touch picked up every subtle variation in the silk of the sheets, and the duvet's lovely brocade. "So what else do I need to know?"

"Actually..." Tyr's lips curved into a slight smile. "You'll probably get a written exam from Margot tomorrow night. She's very thorough about these things."

A musical laugh escaped Beth's throat. "Let me guess the first rule - don't let anyone know vampires exist."

"True, though you've had a lifetime of experience with that as a shifter." Tyr's fingers traced idle patterns on her palm. "What else?"

Beth's brow furrowed in concentration. "Number two... don't kill while feeding?"

"Exactly." Tyr nodded approvingly. "And we cannot Turn a human without explicit permission from Lord Damien. That's absolutely forbidden."

"No problem there." Beth shuddered slightly. "I wouldn't want that responsibility anyway."

"For now, we'll provide donated blood." Tyr gestured to the thermos beside her.

"Until you're ready to feed from a live person.

Derek has volunteered and will be available when you're ready.

I'll supervise your first few feedings to ensure you don't cause any harm - hitting the right vein or artery can be tricky for beginners, and you also need to learn to know when you've taken enough. "

Beth's eyes widened in alarm. "Oh no, we definitely don't want any accidents! I'd never forgive myself if I hurt someone."

Beth twisted her fingers in the soft sheets. "I've never fed from someone before. What if I mess up?"

"You won't." Tyr's voice held absolute certainty. "I'll be right there to guide you through it. Vampire instincts are actually quite precise when it comes to feeding - you'll know exactly where to bite and how much to take."

He paused, his fingers drumming an irregular pattern on the bedspread.

"Speaking of which... I have you here in my chambers for now.

" His voice took on a hesitant quality she'd never heard from him before.

"They're preparing a chamber for you, but with the renovation work still ongoing, it may be a few days before it's ready. "

Beth's breath caught in her throat as Tyr continued, his words coming faster now. "You're more than welcome to stay here in my chambers, with me... if you want to, that is."

Heat flooded Beth's cheeks - apparently vampires could still blush, which was good to know. She wanted to stay, wanted it more than she'd ever admitted to herself. But saying it out loud felt overwhelming.

"Well," she said softly, studying the intricate pattern of the brocade rather than meeting his eyes, "we do have a few days before the other chamber is ready. Maybe I could think about it?"

The tension in Tyr's shoulders eased slightly at her words. "Of course. No pressure. Take all the time you need to decide."

A shadow filled the doorway, drawing Beth's attention from the duvet's intricate patterns.

Tyr rose smoothly to his feet, his posture shifting to one of deep respect.

She detected subtle changes in the air - an ancient power that made her skin tingle, similar to her awareness when she was in her animal form but far stronger.

Antonio stepped into the chamber, his long black hair flowing around his shoulders.

His impeccably tailored suit emphasized his tall, slender frame.

She'd seen him before, of course, but now she was struck by the aura of power emanating from him, something she hadn't been able to sense when she was human.
