Chapter 25 #2
"He said that about you the first time he saw you in your shifter form, too," he told her.
With a tiny roar of triumph, Beth launched herself off Tobi's head and fluttered over to land neatly on Tyr's shoulder.
She settled into place, her miniature self nestling snugly against his neck as if she'd perched there a thousand times before.
Her velvet-soft wings folded gracefully against her sides as she lifted one diminutive paw, proceeding to wash it with exaggerated care.
Her tail, a perfect miniature of her clouded leopard's, curled possessively around Tyr's neck.
His shoulder shook with quiet laughter beneath her small form. The scent of his skin filled her nostrils - a complex mixture of leather, night air, and something uniquely him.
"Serves you right," Tyr said to his brother, reaching up to scratch behind Beth's ears. His fingers found exactly the right spot, making her purr despite her attempts to maintain her dignified pose. "Calling a fierce predator 'adorable' - what did you expect?"
Tobi shot them both a wounded look as he attempted to salvage his thoroughly mussed hair. "My braids - they're ruined! Do you know how long it takes to get these things done?"
Beth paused in her grooming just long enough to give him her best feline smirk before returning to meticulously cleaning her paw, her tail tightening slightly around Tyr's neck in smug satisfaction.
Tyr nudged her. "Okay, Change back. There's more we need to show you."
After nipping his ear to show her displeasure, Beth leaped off Tyr's shoulder, and shifted back to her human form. He steadied her with one hand as she regained her balance.
"Okay, pay attention, this is important," Tyr said, moving toward the ornate wardrobe that dominated one wall. He pulled open a drawer and revealed a sleek keypad that seemed oddly modern against the antique wood. His fingers danced across the numbers in a practiced sequence.
A soft click echoed through the room, and the entire wardrobe began to swing away from the wall with silent precision. Beth's eyes widened as she stepped closer.
"Cool! A secret passage?"
Tobi's grin widened. "Even better. Just wait."
Beth peered into the revealed opening. What initially appeared to be a dark shaft resolved into a circular space with a gleaming metal pole running vertically through its center. The polished surface caught the dim light, disappearing into shadows below.
Before she could ask what it was for, Tobi launched himself at the pole. His hands gripped the metal as he swung his body around it with fluid grace, vanishing downward with a whoop of joy.
Beth ran to the opening, laughter bubbling up as she looked down. "A firehouse pole? Seriously?"
"After you." Tyr's eyes sparkled with amusement as he gestured toward the pole.
Beth grabbed the cool metal with both hands, the thrill of adventure coursing through her as she let herself slide into the darkness below.
Tobi's hand shot out, yanking Beth aside just as Tyr slid down the pole behind them. His quick movement saved her from being knocked over as Tyr landed with vampiric grace.
A soft click drew Beth's attention to where Tobi pressed a recessed button on the wall. Above them, metal whispered against metal as the wardrobe slid back into position.
"Security measure," Tyr told her, noting her curious expression. "That locks the entrance upstairs. Even if someone manages to crack the keypad code up there, they can't get in until I enter the release sequence down here."
Beth turned in a slow circle, her mind reeling.
The underground expanse stretched before them - impossibly vast, easily the size of the warehouse above.
She'd expected a simple basement. Not this massive complex.
High ceilings disappeared into shadows despite the excellent lighting, making her feel tiny in comparison, and the air held a pleasant coolness that reminded her of wine cellars she'd visited.
Multiple doors lined the walls at regular intervals, their solid metal surfaces marked with subtle symbols she didn't recognize. Each door seemed to lead off in a different direction, creating the impression of a hub with many spokes radiating outward.
"This is amazing." Beth turned slowly, catching the faint hum of hidden ventilation systems, the way sound bounced differently in the vast space.
She ran her hand along the nearest metal door, marveling at the cool, smooth surface beneath her fingertips. Subtle variations in the metal hinted at reinforcements or security measures.
"How far down are we?" she asked, still taking in the vast underground space.
"About fifty feet," Tyr replied, his voice echoing slightly in the cavernous room. "Every vampire and Blood Sworn chamber has an escape leading here. This is our emergency escape route if needed."
Beth looked about her. "This is incredible. How did you manage to build all this without anyone noticing?"
"The building already had a cellar." Tyr gestured at the expertly finished walls. "The construction crew just dug deeper, using the old Prohibition tunnels to remove the dirt and rock."
"Prohibition tunnels?" Beth's curiosity peaked. "Like bootlegger smuggling routes?"
Tobi nodded enthusiastically. "Those same tunnels now connect to our network.
The woods provide perfect cover for the original exit points.
" His eyes sparkled with amusement. "After more than a hundred years, those exits are completely hidden by natural overgrowth.
You'd never find them unless you knew exactly where to look. "
Beth pictured the dense forest surrounding the property, understanding how effectively time and nature had concealed the old smuggling routes. "That's brilliant - using existing tunnels instead of having to create everything from scratch."
Beth followed the twins through one of the metal doors, which opened into a long corridor. The industrial-style lighting cast a warm glow over polished concrete floors and expertly finished walls.
"This is our main living area," Tyr said, gesturing to a series of rooms. "In case we have to be down here for any extended period."
The first room contained neat rows of bunk beds, reminding Beth of military barracks she'd seen in movies. "How many people can you house down here?"
"About fifty," Tobi said, leading them past modern bathrooms and a fully equipped professional-grade kitchen.
"Fifty people?"
“The Residence houses about fifteen vampires," Tyr explained with a grin at her stunned expression, "plus roughly twice that many Companions.
We needed emergency capacity for everyone.
" He gestured around the space. “This isn't just a hideout - it's a serious military-grade compound, capable of sustaining an entire community indefinitely. "
They entered a massive walk-in refrigerator, and Beth's nose twitched at the unmistakable scent of blood. One entire wall was lined with neatly organized medical coolers.
"Emergency supplies," Tyr indicated the coolers. "The Pledged rotate the stock regularly, replacing older donations with fresh ones. Nothing goes to waste - the older blood gets donated to local hospitals."
"The generator keeps everything running," Tobi added as they exited the refrigerator. "Completely silent and undetectable from above ground."
Beth's amazement grew as they showed her several communal spaces, furnished with plush sofas and chairs. Flat-screen TVs hung on the walls, and she spotted high-end sound systems tucked discreetly into custom cabinets.
Beth ran her hand along the butter-soft leather armchair, then sank into it with a sigh. "It's like an underground luxury hotel bunker."
"We try to make it comfortable," Tyr said, his fingers brushing her shoulder. "Being trapped underground during an emergency is stressful enough without having to deal with uncomfortable surroundings."
Beth settled deeper into the soft leather, still gazing around in awe, processing the scale and sophistication of the facility. The thought and planning that had gone into creating this safe haven staggered her.
Beth leaned forward in the comfortable armchair, fascinated by the layers of security surrounding them. "So no one can detect this place at all?"
"Not a chance." Tyr's voice held quiet pride. "The entire facility is soundproofed and built to withstand practically anything - even nuclear blasts, theoretically. Though I'd rather not test that particular feature."
"The thermal shielding is perfect too," Tobi added, sprawling across a nearby sofa. "You could have fifty vampires down here doing the Macarena, and infrared sensors wouldn't pick up a thing."
Beth snorted at the mental image. "The Macarena? Really?"
"Hey, some of us appreciate the classics." Tobi's grinned. "But seriously, this place is basically a natural Faraday cage. All the steel reinforcement means even ground-penetrating radar can't see us, especially with all the old tunnel networks creating interference."
"What about staying connected to the outside world?" Beth asked, glancing at her phone which showed no signal.
"Hardwired internet through the tunnels." Tyr gestured toward a sleek monitor mounted on one wall. "We can access all our security cameras, keep tabs on what's happening above ground. Complete surveillance coverage without anyone knowing we're watching."
The screen flickered to life, showing multiple camera views of the property - the warehouse exterior, parking areas, and surrounding woods. Beth saw a deer wander past one of the cameras, completely unaware it was being observed.
"So you can see everything happening up there while staying safely hidden down here," Beth said, recognizing the magnitude of their surveillance network. "This is cutting-edge stuff."
Beth followed Tyr's gesture to another doorway. "That's just a quick-look station. Antonio has a full command center set up through there."
Her curiosity piqued, Beth peered through the doorway, her gaze sweeping the impressive space beyond, catching every detail.
Floor-to-ceiling monitors covered three walls, displaying everything from thermal imaging to satellite views.
Several workstations held sophisticated computer equipment, their sleek modern designs contrasting with the industrial aesthetic of the bunker.
"Wow," Beth breathed, taking in the scale of the operation. "This is like something out of a spy movie."
"Antonio doesn't believe in doing things halfway," Tobi said with a grin. "Wait till you see the armory."
"We've got enough firepower stored down here to overthrow a small country," he continued, leading them down another corridor. "Though hopefully we'll never need it."
Beth's attention caught on a large garage-like space branching off from one of the main tunnels. A dozen rugged ATV's sat ready, their dark paint absorbing the overhead light.
"Emergency vehicles for our humans." Tyr indicated the rows of keys hanging on a board. "If we ever need to evacuate, they can take these through the old bootlegger tunnels. The routes come out miles from here, completely hidden in the woods."
"What about the vampires?" Beth asked, picturing the logistics of an evacuation.
Tyr smiled at her, taking her hand, his fingers threading through hers. "We've got it easier. If it's night, we can either ghost out - you'll learn that trick soon - or shift to our raptor forms and fly away. These are mainly for the humans who look after us."
Beth nodded, impressed by how thoroughly they'd planned for every contingency. The level of detail in their preparations spoke volumes about how seriously they took their responsibility to protect both vampires and humans.
Beth bit her lower lip, a thought occurring to her as she studied the emergency vehicles. "But what happens if it's daytime? The vampires can't escape."
Tyr's fingers squeezed hers gently as a knowing smile crossed his face. "Don't worry - we have that covered too." He guided her toward what appeared to be a blank section of wall. "There's a hidden room down here that even the Blood Sworn don't know about. It can't be discovered, nor broken into."
His blue eyes held a serious glint as he continued. "That's where we would wait for sunset. Being trapped in the daytime is something no vampire ever takes lightly." His thumb traced idle patterns on her palm. "We have layers of protection at all times in any Residence."
The weight of that reality settled over her. As a shifter, she'd always had to be careful about protecting her secret, but vampires faced an additional deadly threat every single day. No wonder they took such elaborate precautions.
