Chapter 26 #2

Once they had relative privacy, Beth turned to her twin.

"It's... an adjustment," she admitted softly.

"The whole vampire thing is actually easier than I expected—the blood, the night schedule, even the enhanced senses.

" She chuckled suddenly. "I'm still running into walls unexpectedly, because I wasn't paying attention to my speed, and suddenly, bam! "

Naomi's face scrunched in sympathy. "Ouch. That sounds painful."

"It was, but..." Beth grinned, rolling up her sleeve to show perfectly unmarked skin. "The bruises vanish like magic. One minute I'm sporting this huge purple mark, the next - poof! Gone. Tyr says it's because vampire healing kicks in almost instantly for minor injuries."

"I am so envious," Naomi groaned, absently touching a fading bruise on her own arm from a recent mishap at the library. "Do you know how many times I've banged my shins on those stupid book carts? And I have to wait days for the bruises to fade."

Beth laughed, the sound echoing musically in the elegant room. "Trust me, the quick healing is definitely making up for my complete lack of grace with these new abilities. Though Tyr swears I'll get better at controlling the speed once I'm more used to it."

"You're telling me the graceful, elegant vampires actually have a clumsy learning period?" Naomi's eyes sparkled with amusement.

"Oh yeah. You should have seen Tobi's face when I told him about walking into walls. Apparently, he spent his first week as a vampire accidentally launching himself through windows because he couldn't control his strength."

Naomi snickered. A comfortable silence fell between them, broken only by the sounds of Liam quietly arranging books on the desk and the muffled construction noise from the other side of the wall.

A soft tap at the door interrupted their conversation. Layla burst into the room, her red hair flying as she rushed to embrace Beth.

"Oh Beth! I've been so worried!" Layla wrapped her arms tightly around Beth. "Are you really okay? When I heard..."

Beth hugged her back carefully, mindful of her new strength. "I'm more than okay. Being a vampire is incredible, Layla. Everything is so vivid now - I can hear heartbeats, smell emotions, see details I never noticed before."

"And the strength!" Beth grinned, gesturing to the heavy boxes lining the walls. "I could probably lift all of these at once if I wanted to. Though Tyr keeps warning me to be careful until I get used to it."

Layla pulled back slightly, studying Beth's face with wonder. "You look different - there's this glow about you. And your eyes..." She tilted her head. "They're still the same color but somehow more intense?"

"Vampire thing," Beth explained, touching the skin beneath her eyes. "All our features get enhanced during the transformation. But the best part is I still have Whisper!"

"Nobody knew if I would keep her when I was Turned. The thought of losing Whisper..." Beth's voice caught. "It would have been like losing half my soul."

Layla touched Beth's arm, her eyes soft with understanding. "I would have been so scared. The thought of losing my caracal... I can't even imagine."

"Me either." Naomi's fingers found Beth's, squeezing gently. "Shadow is such a part of me. The idea of living without her..."

Beth nodded, remembering the fear that had gripped her in those crucial moments. "But Tyr made me realize—if I died, Whisper would die with me anyway. At least this way, we both had a chance."

"Well, there is that," Naomi said softly, her grip tightening on Beth's hand.

The memory of that night sent a shiver through Beth - the searing pain of the bullet, Tyr's desperate race to save her, the terrifying choice she'd had to make. But here she sat, very much alive, with both her leopard and her mate.

Beth shook off the dark memory, her expression brightening. "But enough about that scary stuff. I almost forgot - I have something incredible to show you! You're simply not going to believe this. I swear."

"What is it?" Naomi asked, shifting eagerly.

"Just watch." Beth closed her eyes, reaching for that unique combination of vampire power and shifter magic that she was starting to recognize. The familiar tingle of the Change rippled through her, but lighter, more ethereal.

When she opened her eyes, she found herself perched delicately on the bed, her miniature winged form barely making a dent in the plush comforter. Her dreamy, muted coat caught the light as she stretched her wings, showing off the subtle gradients of color.

Layla's mouth dropped open, and she stared. "Oh my god," she breathed, one hand covering her mouth. "You're... you're… wow!!"

"Beth... what the hell?" Naomi leaned closer, staring at toy-sized winged leopard. "How is this even possible?"

Even Liam abandoned his book organizing to gape at Beth's unique form. "Well, that's completely insane," he said, shaking his head. "Naomi, your sister is officially the coolest person I know."

Beth preened under their admiring stares, her miniature tail curling with satisfaction. She spread her wings wider, letting them admire the delicate fur-covered appendages that somehow merged perfectly with her regular coat.

Beth shifted back to her human form, landing gracefully on her feet beside the bed. Her comfortable loungewear remained perfectly intact, not a wrinkle in sight.

"Wait - your clothes!" Naomi jumped up, circling her sister with wide eyes. "They shifted with you! How did you do that?"

Layla reached out to touch Beth's sleeve in amazement. "I've never seen anything like it. Usually when we shift..."

"We end up naked or tangled in shredded clothing," Beth finished with a laugh. "I know! It's incredible, right? Apparently it's a vampire thing - they can maintain their clothing through transformations."

"That's so unfair," Naomi groaned, tugging at her own shirt. "Do you know how many outfits I've ruined?"

Beth smoothed her hands over her perfectly preserved outfit. "No more hiding spare clothes in bushes or worrying about emergency shifts. Everything just... vanishes when I transform and reappears when I shift back. Even jewelry!"

"Seriously?" Naomi grabbed Beth's hand, examining the delicate silver bracelet on her wrist. "That is so unfair!"

Beth giggled and bounced on her toes, still excited about this new ability. "Tyr says it's because vampires can sort of... fold their possessions into their transformation somehow. They've been doing it for centuries."

Beth turned to Layla, taking her hand. "How are you doing? I've been so caught up in all these changes, I feel like I've lost track of everyone."

Layla's whole face lit up, her blue eyes sparkling. "Oh, Beth, things are going so well! Yousuf started kindergarten last week, and he absolutely loves it."

"Really? That's wonderful!" Beth remembered their earlier conversations about Layla's fears of separation from her son.

"He's made three friends already," Layla continued, practically glowing with maternal pride. "And his teacher, Ms. Reynolds, is amazing with him. She understands about his... background." Layla's smile softened. "She lets him keep his comfort toy in his desk, just in case he gets anxious."

"And you're doing okay with the separation?" Beth asked gently.

"Actually, yes. I'm volunteering in his classroom twice a week - Tuesdays and Thursdays.

It helps, being able to see him thriving in his new environment.

" Layla beamed, her voice full of maternal pride.

"And the children are so precious. They've started calling me 'Miss Layla' and always want me to read stories.

"That's perfect," Beth said warmly. "You get to be there for him while still giving him space to grow independently."

"Exactly!" Layla nodded enthusiastically. "And you were right about the therapy helping. Dr. Martinez suggested the classroom volunteering as a way to ease both of us into the transition. It's working beautifully."

"Speaking of kindergarten…" Layla glanced at her watch. "I need to go pick up Yousuf from school. I just wanted to check on you, make sure you were really okay after everything."

"I'm perfect," Beth assured her, pulling her friend into a careful hug. Her new vampire strength still required conscious control, especially with more delicate humans. "Give Yousuf a big hug from his Aunt Beth."

"I will." Layla squeezed back. "He doesn't know about… well, everything." She laughed suddenly. "He'll be thrilled that you're a vampire now, though! I think Tobi is his new hero."

"Tell him I'll come by soon," Beth promised. "Once I'm more used to..." She gestured vaguely at herself, encompassing her transformed state.

"Of course." Layla gathered her purse, the leather soft and worn. "Text me!"

Beth walked Layla to the door, touched by her friend's concern. "Drive safe. And thank you for coming to check on me."

"That's what family does," Layla said simply, her smile warm as she headed down the hallway toward the elevator.

Beth watched until Layla disappeared around the corner, her enhanced hearing picking up the soft ding of the elevator arriving. The familiar scents of her friend - jasmine perfume and the lingering aroma of the herbal tea she favored - gradually faded from the air.

"Oh!" Beth suddenly remembered something, and turned to her sister. "I have news. Lord Damien wants to meet me."

Naomi's eyes widened. "When?"

"Tomorrow night," Beth said, nerves fluttering in her stomach again at the thought. "He's coming up from New York. Apparently, it's customary for newly Turned vampires to be formally presented to the clan leader."

"Are you nervous?" Naomi asked, studying her face.

"Terrified," Beth admitted with a shaky laugh. "He's over five thousand years old, Naomi. He's one of the first vampires created… like, ever. Even Tyr and Tobi—both of them—go all respectful, even reverent, when they talk about him. What do I even say to someone like that?"

"Hello would be a good start," her sister suggested with a grin.
