Chapter 10 #4
The rhythm changes beneath the kiss. Deeper. Firmer. Still controlled by the angle she gave me, but no longer cautious. The bed shifts quietly with each movement. Her breath breaks against my lips. My entire body narrows toward the place where hers holds me.
“Michael.”
My name in her mouth nearly ends me.
I slow before the pressure can climb past what I can manage.
Diana’s eyes open. “Why?”
“Too close.”
“That isn’t a problem.”
“It is if I stop hearing you.”
Her hands move to my face. “Then look at me.”
I do.
The directive steadies something the slower pace did not. Her eyes remain clear. Her body stays open beneath mine. One thumb moves over my cheek as though the touch can keep my attention exactly where she wants it.
“Again,” she says.
I move.
Her gaze holds mine through every stroke. The intimacy becomes almost unbearable because there is nowhere for me to hide the effect. She sees the effort in my face, the strain in my breathing, and the raw need that makes my hands shake where they hold her.
She does not ask me to become less.
She directs what the strength does.
“Firmer.”
My grip tightens at her hip and ribs.
“Yes.”
The approval travels straight through me.
I move with more force, still keeping my weight from her, still following the angle she controls. Diana answers by lifting into each return. The sensation builds in both of us, her breathing turning ragged, my control narrowing to the next movement and the next word.
Her hand slips between our bodies.
The change makes her tighten around me so suddenly that my vision blurs.
I hold still until I can see her again.
Diana’s fingers move with practiced certainty. Her pleasure rises beneath me, visible in the tension through her stomach and the way her lips part around each breath.
“Keep moving,” she says.
I obey.
The combination becomes almost impossible. The close drag of her body, the rhythm beneath it, the tightening that grows stronger each time I return. My name leaves her again, quieter and more broken.
Her release begins before I understand the first sign.
Her hips lift. Her hand at my side clamps hard. Her body closes around me in deep pulses that pull me past the last point where control can remain untouched.
I do not drive harder.
I hold the rhythm she chose.
The sight of her taking pleasure beneath me, her face open and unguarded, carries me with her. The pressure breaks through my body in one heavy rush, then another, leaving every muscle locked while I remain braced above her.
I bury the sound against her shoulder without biting or pressing my weight down. My hands keep their hold until she says the word that changes it.
“Ease.”
I loosen my grip.
My fingers open at her ribs first, then her hip. The movement slows. I stay close while the last waves pass through us, each smaller than the one before.
Diana’s hands move over my shoulders. “That’s right.”
The words are quiet, tied to the adjustment rather than a judgment of me.
I withdraw carefully and deal with the condom before returning to the bed. Diana shifts toward the headboard, and I start collecting the scattered clothes, the empty packet, the glass from the bedside table, anything that lets my hands become useful again.
“Stay,” she says.
I stop with one knee off the mattress.
“The water is here.”
“I can get it.”
“So can I.”
She reaches for the carafe and fills both glasses. I return to the bed because she asked, settling beside her with my back against the headboard.
Shoulder to shoulder.
The position feels strange after the intensity of being above her. Neither of us is holding the other. Our arms touch along one warm line, and our breathing slowly returns to separate rhythms.
Diana hands me a glass.
I drink half of it before realizing how thirsty I am. She takes smaller sips, then sets hers within reach.
My hands want to adjust the pillow beneath her ankle, straighten the sheet, check whether I held too hard, and ask six questions that would turn the last hour into a performance review.
I keep them around the glass.
Diana rests her head against the headboard. Her hair falls over one shoulder, disordered in a way I know resulted from my hands and her choices together.
“That was trust,” she says.
The words settle in my chest.
Then she continues.
“It was not certification.”
The pleasure leaves me slowly enough that I feel every part of the sting.
“I know.”
“You sound like you wish I hadn’t said it.”
“I wish you didn’t have to.”
“I did not have to. I chose to.”
I look down at the water in my glass. “Because you think I’ll use this as proof.”
“Because bodies make convincing arguments about things they cannot actually decide.”
I remain still beside her.
Diana turns her head toward me. “Wanting your strength does not mean I believe every future use of it will be right.”
“I know.”
“And trusting you to respond in this room does not mean I have promised never to fear a choice you make outside it.”
“I heard you.”
The bluntness comes back into my voice before I can stop it. Diana does not soften what she said to protect the aftermath.
Her shoulder stays against mine.
“What did you hear?” she asks.
“That this doesn’t mean I’m safe.”
“I did not say that.”
“It’s underneath it.”
“No. What is underneath it is that I refuse to make desire carry a moral conclusion it cannot support.”
I place the glass on the bedside table before I grip it too hard.
“My body is useful when somebody needs to be scared,” I say. “Or when somebody needs a hit taken for them. Or pain absorbed so everybody else can keep playing.”
The words come out more roughly than I intend. I look toward the end of the bed rather than at her.
“If you take those away, I don’t know what’s left sometimes. Then you tell me you want the strength, and for a while it feels like maybe there’s another answer.”
“There is another answer tonight.”
“Only tonight?”
“I will not promise what every future choice means.”
The answer hurts because it is the same kind of truth she has given me from the beginning. Specific. Limited. No category allowed to swallow another.
Diana shifts until she can face me more directly without removing her shoulder from mine.
“I wanted your strength because you listened,” she says. “Not because it frightened me. Not because you endured pain. Not because I needed your body to pay for anyone else’s safety.”
I meet her eyes.
“I wanted the pressure you gave me. I wanted the size of you. I wanted your hands to hold firmly when I asked and leave immediately when I changed the instruction.”
Her voice remains steady, but the words bring the room back into my skin. The heat of her beneath my palms. Her body slowly making room for mine. The unbearable intensity of staying still because she told me to stay.
“That is what I can tell you truthfully,” she says. “I wanted your strength because it remained responsive to my choice.”
The fear in my chest does not vanish.
She has not promised to heal it. She has not said I will always use my body well because I used it well with her tonight. She has not turned pleasure into innocence.
“What happens when you think I choose wrong?” I ask.
“I make my own choice about what follows.”
“You might leave.”
“Yes.”
The answer lands without cruelty.
Diana reaches for my hand and opens it over the sheet. She does not place it on her body this time. Her palm settles against mine, fingers resting between the thicker lines and old scars without trying to transform them into something beautiful.
“I will keep choosing,” she says. “That is what makes the trust real.”
Not certainty.
Choice.
I turn my hand beneath hers until our palms meet more fully. My fingers close with none of the pressure she asked for earlier, only enough to keep the contact.
Tonight, my body frightened nobody. It absorbed no blow, delivered no punishment, and proved nothing about what I deserve.
She wanted it anyway.
For now, I let that answer be exactly as large as it is.
