Chapter 18 #3

By the time he arrives, the showcase file is approved, my clean laundry is back in the dresser, and the food in my refrigerator reflects several rushed decisions rather than adult planning.

Michael brings takeout because I ask him to. He does not arrive with the meal already chosen.

We eat at the kitchen table, argue mildly about whether one professional athlete can reasonably consume the amount of rice remaining in the container, and clear the dishes together. He washes while I dry because neither task carries emotional meaning beyond the fact that the food has left a mess.

When the counter is clean, the quiet changes.

Michael dries his hands and places the towel over the oven handle. He looks at me without scanning the room for another useful task.

“Do you want me to stay?” he asks.

“Yes.”

His chest rises beneath the soft fabric of his shirt. “Do you want me in your room?”

“Yes.”

We walk there together.

The bed is made badly because I changed the sheets earlier and decided fitted corners did not deserve additional leadership. Michael looks at the uneven top sheet and keeps his mouth closed.

“You have an opinion,” I say.

“I value survival.”

“That has not always been clear.”

“I have new systems.”

The joke softens the threshold without hiding what waits beyond it.

We sit side by side on the edge of the bed. Several inches remain between our thighs, enough space to keep the first touch from becoming assumed.

Michael places his hands on the mattress beside his legs. “Can I come closer?”

I turn toward him and close the distance myself.

Our knees meet first. I lift one hand to the side of his neck, feel his pulse beneath my palm, and draw his mouth to mine.

The kiss begins with more hesitation than our first one. We already know each other’s mouths and bodies, which makes caution more visible rather than less. Michael touches my waist through my shirt, pauses there, and lets me choose whether the hand remains.

I move closer until my thigh presses along his.

His mouth opens beneath mine.

The familiar pleasure of kissing him returns without erasing the café, the separation, or the choices that caused it. I want him while remembering all of them. The combination is more honest than desire that requires forgetting.

I slide my fingers into his close-cut hair and kiss him deeper.

Michael’s hand travels from my waist to the middle of my back. The pressure is steady and unremarkable, neither a demonstration of strength nor a performance of restraint.

When we separate, he stays close enough that our foreheads nearly touch.

“Still the implant?” he asks.

“Yes. Condoms are in the nightstand.”

“Same limits?”

“No roughness. No throat contact. No restraint.”

“Yes.”

“If either of us stops, we say it.”

“I will.”

He does not ask whether the conversation has made sex permissible. The relationship resumed before he entered my home. This is another choice inside it.

I reach for the hem of his sweater. Michael lifts his arms, and I pull the fabric over his head. His shirt follows more slowly because I stop to kiss the skin revealed above the collar.

He removes my top when I raise my arms for him. The motion leaves my hair disturbed around its tie. Michael begins to fix the loose section, then stops.

“Take it out,” I say.

He removes the tie carefully. My hair settles over my shoulders, and he runs his fingers through the ends without trying to arrange them.

I unfasten his jeans while he works at mine. Our hands interfere, and I laugh against his mouth when his knuckles knock mine away from the button.

“Coordination,” he says.

“You play professionally.”

“This formation is new.”

“It has two people.”

“That is where the complication starts.”

We stand long enough to remove the rest of our clothes, each of us helping and being helped without assigning a leader.

Michael steadies himself with one hand against the bed while I draw fabric down his legs.

He kneels briefly to help me free one foot, then rises before the position can become service performed for approval.

When we lie down, we face each other on our sides.

The position places his eyes level with mine. His lower arm rests beneath his pillow rather than under my weight, and his upper hand settles at my hip. Most of his body remains supported by the mattress, his size running parallel to mine instead of above it.

I trace the center of his chest with my fingertips. The muscle shifts beneath the touch, but he does not tighten as if preparing to be measured.

Michael kisses the corner of my mouth. I turn enough to meet him fully.

His hand moves over my side while mine explores him in return. We alternate without deciding to, one touch creating room for the next. I pass my palm across his shoulder. He follows the curve of my waist. I draw my nails lightly down his back, and his mouth opens against mine on a quiet sound.

The hesitation begins to steady.

I know how his body responds when he is trying to remain perfectly still. I know how quickly his attention can become so exact that he disappears into it.

Tonight he lets himself react.

His leg slides between mine, giving my upper thigh a place to rest without twisting my ankle. I shift until the angle feels natural, then press closer.

Michael’s fingers move between us. He watches my face at first, and I catch his wrist.

“You can feel me without evaluating every breath,” I say.

“I am trying.”

“I know. Keep touching me.”

His attention drops to my mouth. He kisses me while his hand continues, the rhythm shaped by my hips and the pressure of my fingers at his back.

I reach for him too.

Michael’s body responds at once, but he does not turn my touch into a demand for the next act. He presses his forehead briefly against mine and lets me discover the pace that changes his breathing.

The reciprocity makes it difficult to identify who is giving and who is receiving. Each of us keeps interrupting that distinction.

He kisses my throat without placing a hand there. I stroke him until his hips move once against my palm, then slow when the movement becomes too sharp for the careful angle between us.

“Condom,” I say.

Michael reaches toward the nightstand. I open the drawer because my hand is closer and pass one to him with the lubricant.

He rolls the condom on, adds enough lubricant to make the next choice comfortable, and returns to his side facing me. The practical pause does not become an opportunity for apology or reassurance.

I hook my upper leg across his thigh.

Michael’s hand supports my hip while I guide him closer. We adjust once, then again, because his body still requires time and because familiarity does not eliminate anatomy.

“Slow,” I say.

“Yes.”

He enters me gradually from the side, his weight held by the mattress and his arm. The pressure builds without forcing my body beneath his. I keep one hand at his hip, controlling how close we become while he watches my face.

When the angle catches too deeply, I move my knee lower.

Michael stops at once. “Better?”

I test the position with a small movement. “Yes. Stay there.”

He stays.

The stillness carries sensation through every place our bodies meet. His mouth finds mine again, and I kiss him while my body accommodates the fullness between us.

I begin the next movement.

Michael follows.

Our rhythm remains slow enough that each change belongs to both of us. His hand travels from my hip along my back, bringing me close without trapping me. Mine moves across his chest and down his side, learning the tension he no longer hides behind perfect control.

He touches me between our bodies. I change the angle of my leg to give him room.

Pleasure gathers through the repeated combination of his fingers, the measured movement of his hips, and his mouth returning to mine whenever our breathing separates us.

Michael watches me too closely again.

I recognize the change when his rhythm becomes almost absent. Every touch turns careful in exactly the same way, as though tenderness has become a test he cannot risk failing.

I press my palm to his chest. “What happened?”

He stops completely.

His breath reaches my face, warm and uneven. “I’m trying to make this perfect.”

“Why?”

“Because part of me is treating perfect tenderness like another apology.”

The admission is quiet. He does not withdraw, and he does not continue while waiting for me to make the discomfort disappear.

I hold his gaze.

He has noticed the performance before I had to drag it into words. The interruption exists without becoming proof that the entire night was mistaken.

“Stay close,” I say. “Kiss me again.”

Michael searches my face once, then obeys the present request rather than the apology he invented.

His mouth meets mine.

I draw him closer with my hand at his back, and he resumes the movement between us. It is no longer so careful that he vanishes. His body answers mine with a steadier rhythm, enough force to satisfy without turning pressure into control.

I touch him everywhere I can reach. The back of his neck. His shoulder. The strong line of his hip beneath my palm.

He responds instead of evaluating.

When I need more from his hand, I guide it and say, “Here.”

Michael adjusts.

The renewed rhythm carries me toward release without either of us announcing what the moment means. My muscles tighten around him, disrupting the pace. I press my mouth against his shoulder, then turn back to kiss him as pleasure moves through me.

He remains close.

I keep touching him afterward, not because reciprocity requires balanced accounting but because I want the way his body loses its practiced stillness beneath my hands.

Michael’s breath breaks against my mouth. His hips move through several uneven strokes before he comes, held beside me rather than over me.

No confession arrives at the peak.

He stays where I asked him to stay.
