Chapter 12 Things Made for People
I want Nella to be able to walk out of here without choosing between warm feet and her own magic. It seems a small thing to ask of a pair of boots.
Nella's boots sit on my workbench, worn and practical, the kind of footwear someone buys when they expect to walk a lot and don't care about appearance.
I've been studying them since yesterday, turning the problem over in my mind.
She needs contact with the earth. Boots prevent that.
The obvious solution is no boots, but bare feet in late autumn will cause problems of their own.
Cali leans over the shelf above my bench. "Are you cutting holes in those?"
I turn the sole toward her. "Flaps. Open for sensing. Closed for walking."
She draws one paw away from my knife. "Good. I was going to warn Nella."
"Thank you for your overwhelming confidence." I make the first careful cut, following the line I've traced in chalk. "With the flaps shut, her feet stay protected. She has to open them and touch earth to use the skill."
The work is delicate, requiring the kind of focused attention that pushes other worries to the edges of my mind. I cut and shape, test and adjust, building small hinges from scraps of metal that will let the flaps swing open and stay open until she chooses to close them.

Lyra comes in as I finish the first boot, leaving her bow beside the doorway.
"Boots for Nella?" She crosses to the bench and examines my work with the practical eye of someone who understands the value of good footwear. "Clever."
I show her the hinge mechanism, demonstrating how the flap swings open. "She can walk normally most of the time. When she needs to sense something, she opens these and gets direct contact."
Lyra tests the catch with her thumb. "Can she work it with cold fingers?"
I widen the little catch, then turn to kiss her cheek. "How was patrol?"
"Quiet." She leans into me for a moment, her warmth familiar against my side. "No new signs. Either our watcher has gotten more careful, or they've moved on."
"I wouldn't count on that." I return to the second boot, making the first cut. "I'd like them gone. I can't assume it."
"No." She watches my hands work. "They don't."
When the boots are finished, I move on to the next project. Luca left his shield with me after breakfast. He waited while I cleared a space for it, then finally let go. I put it on the cloth he chose, with the damaged edge facing me.
Cali drops from her shelf to investigate as I set the shield on my workbench. "You're going to fix it?"
"I'm going to try." I run my fingers along the crack, feeling the wrongness beneath the surface. "The metal remembers what was done to it. I need to separate the repair from the evidence."
Cali lowers her head to inspect the carved lines. "Can you do both?"
"I don't know yet." I reach for my tools. "But I'm going to find out."
I close the crack with careful mana, keeping clear of the carved seal. The metal joins beneath my fingertips while the damaged pattern stays where it is. I lift the shield and test the repaired edge before putting it down again.
[STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS (E)Object: Defender's shieldAssessment: Primary fracture repaired. Structural integrity restored.Suppression traces preserved in surrounding metal. The shield will hold. The evidence remains.Good. You remembered to be careful this time.]
Near the edge of the shield, where the strap attaches, my analysis catches something I missed before. A small mark stamped into the metal, partially worn but still visible. A tiny maker's stamp beneath the hooked seal, hidden until I cleaned the damaged edge.
I set down my tools and look more closely.
"Lyra." My voice comes out steadier than I feel. "Come look at this."
She's at my side in moments, leaning over the shield with focused attention. "There's a smaller stamp under the seal."
By midday, the shield is whole again. The crack is gone, the metal strong, the suppression traces preserved but contained. The mark remains visible for anyone who knows to look.
I set the shield aside and turn to my next project.
"You're making something else?" Cali has returned to her shelf, watching with the patience of someone who has nowhere else to be. "How many gifts are you planning?"
"Two more projects." I pull out the materials I gathered yesterday, thin chains and small crystals, scraps of metal that will hold enchantment. "Protection charms for Lyra. Something for you."
"For me?" Her ears perk forward. "What kind of something?"
"A cushion." I gesture toward the corner where her current sleeping spot sits, a folded blanket that's seen better days. "Elevated. Comfortable. Placed somewhere you can supervise without climbing."
Cali looks down at the folded blanket she has been using. "Higher than that."
I hold the planks against the wall at shoulder height. "Here?"
She stretches her neck to inspect the view. "Closer to the warm corner. And keep your tools off it."
For someone who objects to gifts, she has opinions ready. I move the wood where she wants it.
The charms come first, two matching pieces that will let Lyra and me sense each other within a limited range. Not tracking, exactly. Just a faint warmth while the other charm is within range. It cannot tell us whether the wearer is safe.
[CRAFTING: Protection charm (paired)Materials: Silver chain, resonance crystal, bonding mediumEffect: Presence awareness between linked wearersRange: Approximately one kilometerLimitation: Suppression fields will block the signalOut of range also means no signal. Do not confuse silence with an answer.]
I test the link by holding both charms, feeling the faint warmth that passes between them. When I move one to the far side of the workshop, the warmth remains, attenuated but present.
Lyra comes back from putting the tea on as I finish the settings.
"What are those?" She leans over my shoulder, her breath warm on my neck.
I hold up the matched pair. "For us. If we're separated, these will tell us the other is there. Within a kilometer or so. Not precise location, just presence."
Her hand closes around one charm, turning it to catch the light. "I'll know you're close."
"Only close. No direction." I clasp the second charm around my own neck. "It works both directions."
She doesn't say anything for a moment, just looks at the charm in her palm. Then she puts it on, the silver chain settling against her collarbone.
She steps toward the doorway, keeping a hand over her charm. "Show me."
I walk to the far end of the workshop. "What do you feel?"
"Warmth." Her hand presses against the charm. "Like you're still beside me. Faint, but clear."
"Good." I return to her side and kiss her properly, feeling the matched warmth of both charms between us. "That's exactly what it should do."
Her fingers close around the chain. "What if someone blocks it? Those suppression fields you mentioned?"
"Then it goes cold." I touch my own charm. "It does that outside the range too. We'll still need to tell each other where we're going."
She slips the charm beneath her shirt. I like seeing it there. A small thing I made that she chose to keep close.
"Thank you." She kisses me again, softer this time. "For thinking of me."
"I always think of you." I brush a strand of hair from her face. "You're hard to forget."
Cali makes a gagging sound from her shelf. "I preferred when you two were awkward about your feelings. This is worse."
"You love us." Lyra doesn't look away from me.
"I tolerate you." Cali jumps down and stalks toward the door. "I'm going to find Nella. She appreciates dignity."
The cushion takes more stuffing than I expected. I press it down, add another handful, and brace the platform so it won't rock when she lands.
Cali returns as I'm making final adjustments, Nella trailing behind her with dirt on her hands from the garden.
"You actually made it." Cali circles the platform, examining it from every angle. "I thought you were joking."
"I said I would." I gesture toward the cushion. "Try it."
She jumps up with easy grace, landing precisely in the center of the cushion. Her paws knead the fabric, testing the give. Her tail curls around her body as she settles.
"It's acceptable." She refuses to meet my eyes. "The height is correct."
"High praise." I scratch behind her ears, feeling her purr start despite her best efforts to appear unimpressed. "I'll treasure that review."
"Don't get used to it." But she doesn't move away from my hand. "This doesn't mean I'm going to stop critiquing your life choices."
I leave my hand beneath her chin. "I would never dream of it."
Nella watches the exchange with something approaching amusement. "You built your cat a throne."
"I built my familiar a platform." I turn to retrieve her boots from the workbench. "And I modified your boots. Want to try them?"
She takes the boots with careful hands, examining the hinged flaps in the soles. "These open?"
"Press here." I show her the small catch. "The flap swings down. Your foot touches the ground directly. Press again to close."
She brings the customer chair over and pulls off her borrowed shoes, sliding her feet into the modified boots. The fit looks right, snug but not tight.
"Walk around." I step back to give her room. "Tell me if anything pinches."
She walks out to the little herb bed beside the doorway. One hand rests on the frame as she opens the catches and presses her feet to the soil.
"Oh." The word comes out small, surprised. "Cali's coming after us. I can feel her feet."
I wait beside the doorway, watching for any pinch or stumble. "Good or bad?"
"Good." She closes the flaps and takes a few more steps. "Closed feels normal. Protected. But I know I can open them whenever I need to."
"That's the idea." I gather my tools, putting the workshop back in order. "Choices. Options you didn't have before."
She's quiet for a moment, looking down at her feet. When she speaks again, her voice is rough. "Thank you. You didn't have to do this."
"I wanted to." I meet her eyes. "I wanted them to work for you. Tell me if they rub."
Luca comes around the side of the house, drawn by the voices. "What's happening?"
"Gifts." Nella holds up one foot to show him the modified boot. "He made me boots I can actually use."
"And he fixed your shield." I retrieve it from the workbench and hold it out to him. "The crack is gone. It should hold now."
He takes the shield with reverent hands, running his fingers along the place where the crack used to be. "You fixed it. Actually fixed it."
"There's something else." I point to the edge near the strap. "A maker's stamp under the seal. I couldn't see it before cleaning the edge."
His face goes pale, but he looks. His jaw tightens when he finds it.
"Someone made this." His voice is flat. "Someone connected to them."
"Or modified it." I keep my tone gentle. "We don't know the full story yet. But I thought you should know."
He stares at the mark for a long moment. Then he lifts the shield and slides his arm through the strap, settling it into position with the ease of long practice.
"It's still mine." His voice is stronger now. "Whatever they did. It's still mine."
"Yes." I watch him adjust the grip, testing the weight. "It is."
Lyra brings the copied certification to the doorway. She points to a tiny stamp tucked beneath its seal, then to the new mark on Luca's shield. "That little stamp matches too."
I bend to see it. Whoever supplied the marked paper also left a mark on the shield. A maker, or someone using their stamp. We can look for that without guessing at a name.

I grin before I can help it. Every finished piece is already in someone's hands, or under Cali. I want to make more things like these.
Cali stretches on her new platform, her tail hanging over the edge with deliberate elegance.
Lyra puts the copy away and returns with one of the delivery receipts from the box. Her finger rests under a stamped corner.
"Here." She holds it beside the shield. "Same maker's stamp. This shipment went to the waystation."
Luca leaves his arm through the shield strap while we compare them. He doesn't surrender it this time, and I'm glad.
I draw the receipt closer. We have a supply route to follow.
Cali settles deeper into her cushion. "Take the papers off my new seat before you get excited."
I lift them clear. Even with that stamp in front of me, I can't help smiling.
