Chapter 14 Escapees at the Gate

The charm went cold after Lyra left the village behind.

I've been checking it constantly, pressing my palm against the metal every few minutes, feeling the absence of warmth that means Lyra has moved beyond our one-kilometer range. It doesn't mean danger. It doesn't mean anything except distance. I keep reminding myself of that as the hours crawl past.

"She said evening." Suki has stationed herself near the window, her ears tracking sounds from outside. "It's barely past afternoon."

"I know." I set down the bandage I've been rolling and unrolling for the past hour. "The cold charm doesn't mean anything's wrong. Just that she's far away."

"Then stop checking it." Cali watches from her platform with knowing eyes. "You're making everyone nervous."

"I'm not checking it." I check it again. Still cold. "I'm just... aware of it."

"You're touching it right now." Nella's voice comes from the doorway, where she's been practicing with her boots, opening and closing the sole flaps. "We can see you."

I lower my hand from the chain. "That's not helpful."

"It's accurate." She crosses to the patient chair and sits, closing the flaps before resting her feet on the floor. "The coordinates she's following are northeast of the south-road resting place. That's at least two hours of travel each direction, probably more if she's being careful."

"She's always careful." Luca appears beside her, his repaired shield on his arm. "And she knows those woods better than anyone."

They're right. They're all right. But the charm is cold and Lyra is somewhere I can't reach, and every minute feels like an hour.

I force myself to focus on something useful. The ward-breaking focus sits on my workbench, three charges contained in its small frame. If Lyra finds what we're looking for, we'll need it. If she doesn't come back, we'll need it even more.

The afternoon fades toward evening. Shadows lengthen across the workshop floor. The charm stays cold.

Then Suki's ears snap forward.

"Two people approaching." Her voice sharpens. "Moving fast. Unsteady gait. One is limping badly."

I'm at the door before she finishes speaking, pulling it open to scan the path. Two figures are making their way toward Royal Health, one supporting the other, both of them moving with the desperate urgency of people who have been running for their lives.

Not Lyra. The shapes are wrong, the movements unfamiliar.

But they're heading here, and they need help.

I meet them halfway down the path, my healer's instincts cataloging injuries even as my heart sinks. The one being supported is a woman, her ankle twisted at a bad angle, her face pale with pain. The man supporting her has bruises across his jaw and blood crusted under his fingernails.

"Help us." The man's voice cracks on the words. "A woman told us to come here. Dark hair. Bow on her back."

Lyra sent them. My chest tightens.

"You're safe now." I take some of the woman's weight, easing the burden on her companion. "Let's get you inside."

We settle them in the patient area, the woman on the cot and the man in the chair beside her. Suki brings water while I begin examining the twisted ankle.

"I'm Maren." The woman watches me work, her eyes hollow with exhaustion. "This is Dav. We were being held at a waystation northeast of the south-road resting stop."

"I know the location." I keep my voice steady as I probe the injury. "The supply coordinates point there. How long were you held?"

"Three weeks." Dav accepts water from Suki with shaking hands. "Maybe longer. It's hard to track time in that place."

Nella has gone very still near the doorway. Luca's hand has found his shield strap.

"There were eight of us." Maren winces as I manipulate her ankle, checking for breaks. "Six others are still there."

"The woman who sent you here." I wrap the ankle with careful precision, binding the sprain. "What happened to her?"

Maren and Dav exchange a look, something passing between them that makes my stomach clench.

"She found us outside the compound." Dav sets down his water, his expression haunted. "We'd made it through the door, but guards were right behind us. She stepped out of the trees and pointed us toward Cranstonia. Said to find a place called Royal Health."

"And then?" My hands stay steady on the bandage even as my heart pounds.

"She held them off." Maren's voice breaks. "We looked back once, near the tree line. Three guards had surrounded her. She was fighting, but there were too many."

"You saw them take her." Not a question. I need to be sure.

"We saw them force her to the ground." Dav's hands clench on his knees. "Bind her arms. Drag her back toward the compound. We wanted to help, but she'd told us to run. And we were in no condition to fight."

The charm against my chest is still cold. It's been cold for hours, telling me nothing except distance. But now I know what the distance means.

[STATUS UPDATELyra: Captured. Confirmed by witness testimony.Location: Waystation northeast of south-road rest stop.Remaining prisoners: Seven (six original plus Lyra)The charm couldn't tell you this. It only measures distance. Now you know. Use the knowledge.]

I finish wrapping Maren's ankle and move to examine Dav's injuries. The bruises are superficial, painful but not dangerous. The blood under his nails came from fighting back against whoever held him.

"Tell me about the compound." I clean the shallow cuts on his hands as he talks. "Layout. Guard positions. How many people and where."

"It's built into old mine tunnels." Dav hisses as I apply salve to a deeper scrape. "The main entrance is above ground, disguised as a supply depot. Guards rotate every four hours, two at the entrance, more inside."

"The prisoners are kept underground." Maren has pushed herself up on the cot, her wrapped ankle elevated. "Cells carved into the rock. We could hear each other through the walls but couldn't see anyone."

"Suppression fields throughout." Dav's voice tightens. "I could feel them every moment. Like a weight pressing down on everything I am."

Nella makes a soft sound of recognition. She knows exactly what he's describing.

"The man in charge." I set aside the salve and begin bandaging Dav's hands. "Did you see him? Talk to him?"

"Matteo." Maren spits the name like a curse. "He came through yesterday. Told the guards there was a deadline. That the procedures needed to be finished."

I set the bandage roll down before I crush it. "What deadline?"

"Dawn after tomorrow." Dav meets my eyes. "He said there was no point maintaining prisoners who couldn't serve the purpose. Whatever that means."

Tomorrow, then the next dawn. Time to prepare and reach them, if we start now.

"The entrance location." I stand and move to the map on my workshop wall. "Can you show me exactly where?"

Maren tries to rise, but Nella brings a copy of the map to her cot. She holds it steady while Maren studies the terrain.

"Here." She points to a spot I've been watching for days, where the supply coordinates intersect. "The road curves around this hill. The depot entrance looks like an abandoned mining office from the outside."

"How many guards total?" Suki has pulled out paper and begun making notes.

"We saw six during our escape." Dav joins us at the map. "Two at the entrance, four who came after us. But there could be more we never saw."

"Suppression field boundaries?" I trace the path from the entrance to where Maren indicated the cells.

"They start just inside the main door." Maren's finger follows the tunnel on an imaginary map. "Get stronger as you go deeper. By the time you reach the cells, you can barely think through them."

Luca has been silent through most of this, his face pale as he listens. Now he speaks, his voice rough.

"I know those tunnels." Everyone turns to look at him. "I was held there too. I remember the passage opening into a bigger room. I don't know what they've changed since I escaped. We need to check."

I look from Luca to Dav. "A bigger room?"

"Where they worked on me." His hand tightens on his shield. "I don't know what they mean to do at dawn. I don't want anyone left there to find out."

Nella's expression has gone flat, the careful blankness she wears when memories get too close.

"We have time." I look at each of them in turn, seeing fear and determination in equal measure. "A full day to plan before their deadline. We're not rushing in blind."

"But we are going in." Suki's ears are forward, her whole body tense with readiness.

"We're going in." I touch the cold charm against my chest. "Lyra went to help us understand what we're facing. Now we know. And we're going to bring her home."

Cali has been watching from her platform throughout. Now she speaks, her voice cutting through the tension.

"The ward-breaker has three charges." She looks at me with knowing eyes. "You'll need to use them carefully."

"I know." I think about the compound layout, the layers of suppression, the prisoners trapped in cells they can't escape. "One to get through the outer defenses. One for the inner suppression field. One for whatever we find at the center."

Cali watches my hand close around the handle. "And if three isn't enough?"

"Then we improvise." I turn back to the map, studying the terrain around the compound. "But we save them for barriers we cannot get past another way."

Maren and Dav have slumped with exhaustion, the effort of their escape and the journey here finally catching up with them. Nella guides Maren back to the cot while Suki helps Dav to a more comfortable position.

"Rest." I pull blankets from the storage chest. "You've done enough. We'll prepare now and leave with time to reach them."

"The others." Maren's eyes are already closing, but she fights sleep to speak. "Kira and Bram and the rest. They were kind to us. Shared food when we had nothing. Don't let Matteo finish what he started."

"We won't." I tuck the blanket around her. "Sleep now."

The workshop falls quiet as our guests drift into exhausted slumber. I return to the map, studying the paths between Royal Health and the waystation, calculating travel times and approach routes.

Lyra is somewhere in those tunnels, surrounded by suppression fields and hostile guards, waiting for help that might not come in time.

But I know where she is now. I have the ward-breaker. I have people willing to fight beside me.

"We need to know current guard positions." Suki joins me at the map. "Maren and Dav's information is hours old. Things may have changed."

"We also need to know if they've moved prisoners since Lyra was taken." I trace the path from entrance to cells. "And whether the suppression fields have been strengthened."

"I can scout ahead when we go." Suki's voice is steady. "Get close enough to check before the rest of you approach."

"We plan the approach tonight." I look at Luca and Nella, at Cali on her platform, at the sleeping escapees who trusted us enough to come here. "Everyone who wants to help, we meet at dawn."

The charm against my chest stays cold. One kilometer of range, and Lyra is far beyond it, held by people who don't care how much damage they do.

But we're not helpless. We're not hopeless. And we're not going to let them win.

I press my palm against the cold metal one more time, making a promise I intend to keep.

Hold on. We're coming.
