Chapter 18 The Central Building
The central building sits at the back of the compound, larger than the others, with reinforced doors and no windows. Guards are converging on it from all directions, abandoning the outer structures to protect whatever's inside.
"That's where they do the permanent work." Luca's voice is tight, his repaired shield held close. "I remember being brought here. The pressure got worse the closer we got."
I can feel it too. The outer suppression field is down, but something else presses against my senses as we approach. Another barrier, stronger and more focused than the first one.
"There's an inner ward." I stop near a stack of old mining equipment, using it for cover while I assess the situation. "The anchor will be inside or very close to that door."
Nella has positioned herself near a gap in the equipment where dirt shows through cracked stone. She shakes her head before I can ask. "Floor's solid between here and the building. I can hear guards moving, but I can't feel anything through this."
Right. Her Earthtouch needs direct ground contact within ten meters. Inside a building with stone floors, she's working with ears and eyes like the rest of us.
Suki points toward the left side of the building. "There's a side entrance. Smaller, probably for supplies. Only one guard visible."
"One guard we can see." Cali's tail swishes against my leg. "Could be more inside playing cards and waiting to ruin our day."
"It's still better than five." Suki adjusts the strap on her pack, her eyes tracking movement near the main entrance.
She's right. We can't fight our way through five trained guards with Luca's projection spent and everyone running on determination instead of reserves. The side entrance is our best option.
"We take the side door." I check the ward-breaker again, feeling its remaining charges. Two left. "Once we're past the entrance, I'll find the inner ward's anchor and use the second charge."
"And the third?" Luca keeps his physical shield raised, watching the guards reorganize near the main door.
I close my fingers around the focus. "Save it for whatever's at the center. Whatever they're using on the prisoners."
We circle around the back of the building, using rusted equipment and old supply crates for cover. The single guard at the side entrance is focused on the chaos at the front, watching his colleagues form up rather than looking for threats from behind.
Suki moves first, silent as a shadow despite the rough terrain. By the time the guard realizes someone's behind him, she's already got him in a chokehold. He struggles briefly, then goes limp.
"Sleeping." She lowers him to the ground and checks his breathing. "He'll wake up with a headache and regrets."
The side door is locked, but the lock is old and poorly maintained. Luca applies pressure with his shield edge and the mechanism gives way with a reluctant click.
Inside, the building opens into a storage area filled with crates and barrels. The smell of dust and old metal hangs in the air. Emergency lamps provide dim illumination, casting everything in uneven shadows.
And the pressure of the inner ward presses against my senses, stronger than before. How many layers did they build into this place?
"The anchor has to be close." I move carefully between the crates, searching for anything that might serve as a focus point. "Look for something crystal, or metal with unusual markings."
"There." Cali's ears point toward a support pillar near the center of the room. "Something's embedded in the base. Glowing like it thinks it's important."
I see it now. A crystalline formation similar to the outer anchor, but larger and more complex. Veins of light pulse through it, connecting to invisible threads that spread throughout the building.
I point to the pillar. "That's it. Cover me."
I'm halfway to the pillar when the inner door bursts open.
Three guards pour through, swords drawn, moving with the coordinated precision of people who've trained together. They must have been waiting, must have known we'd try to breach from the side.
Luca steps forward with his shield raised. The first guard's sword crashes against it, the impact ringing through the storage area. Luca holds, barely, his arm absorbing the shock through the repaired metal.
The second guard circles toward Nella. She's ready this time, a loose piece of metal pipe in her hands. When he swings, she blocks with the pipe and kicks at his knee, forcing him back.
The third guard comes for me.
[RESONANCE STRIKE (A)Activation: Combat defensiveTarget: Sword arm, motor disruptionNote: Keep moving toward the anchor.]
Mana flows through my hand and releases in a targeted pulse aimed at the guard's shoulder. His sword arm spasms, the blade swinging wide, and I duck under it.
But he recovers faster than expected. His other hand catches my coat and yanks me off balance.
Cali hits him from behind, claws raking across the back of his neck. He screams and lets go, spinning to face the new threat.
I scramble toward the pillar.
Behind me, the fight continues. Luca's shield catches a sword blow meant for his head, the physical metal ringing with impact. Nella's pipe connects with a guard's wrist, and his weapon clatters to the ground. Suki appears from somewhere and takes the third guard's legs out from under him.
The anchor is right there. I press the ward-breaker against it.
I brace my free hand against the pillar. "Get clear!"
The second charge releases.
The crystalline formation cracks, then shatters. Light pulses outward in waves, and the pressure of the inner ward vanishes like a held breath finally released.
[WARD-brEAKER: Charge 2 expendedTarget: Inner ward anchor (contact disruption)Inner suppression field: CollapsedCharges remaining: 1The prisoners can feel their magic again. So can whoever's watching them.]
The change is immediate. I can sense the sudden rush of freed magic throughout the building as the suppression field falls. Somewhere deeper inside, voices cry out in surprise, prisoners who haven't felt their own abilities in weeks suddenly aware of what was taken from them.
More shouts from the inner door. Reinforcements coming.
"We need to move." Suki is already at the inner door, listening. "More guards in the corridor. At least six."
My eyes stay on the inner door. "And beyond them?"
Suki presses closer to the opening. "A larger room. Lots of voices."
Where Lyra is.
"Nella, stay close. Luca, physical defense only.
Suki, with me." I check my mana. The Resonance Strikes and ward-breaker charges have cost me, but I'm nowhere near empty.
My body is tired, muscles aching from running and fighting, but my reserves are solid.
"Cali, cause problems when problems are useful. "
"Finally, clear instructions." She falls into step beside me.
We move through the inner door into a corridor that stretches toward the center of the building. The emergency lamps are brighter here, the construction more recent. Whatever they've built at the heart of this compound, they've invested real resources in it.
The six guards Suki mentioned are positioned at intervals along the corridor, blocking our path. They look nervous now that the suppression field is down. Magic-capable prisoners are dangerous, and they know it.
"Surrender." The lead guard steps forward, sword raised. "You're outnumbered and your healer looks ready to collapse."
I straighten my shoulders, ignoring the ache in my legs. "We're here for the prisoners. Let us pass and no one else gets hurt."
"Can't do that." He sounds almost apologetic. "Orders."
Nella touches my arm, her voice low. "Someone's coming from the big room. I can hear boots. Fast."
The alarm suddenly changes pitch, higher and more urgent. A new voice echoes through the corridor, cold and measured.
The voice rises over the alarm. "All prisoners to processing. Immediately. This facility is compromised."
Matteo.
The guards exchange nervous glances. Whatever their orders were, this is clearly an escalation they didn't expect.
"They're going to do it now." Luca's face has gone white. "Whatever they were planning for dawn, they're doing it now."
No more time for negotiation.
I gather my mana and push past the lead guard.
He swings at me. Luca's physical shield catches the blow, the impact driving him back but keeping me safe. I keep moving, trusting my team to handle what's behind me.
Suki takes down one guard with a strike to his throat. Cali trips another by darting between his legs. Nella swings her pipe at a third, catching him across the ribs.
I reach the end of the corridor and throw open the door to the central room.
It's larger than I expected, a converted mining chamber with high ceilings and industrial equipment pushed against the walls. At the center stands a machine I don't recognize, a massive construct of metal and crystal that pulses with wrongness.
Prisoners are lined up along one wall. Six of them, hands bound, faces hollow with exhaustion and fear. I scan them quickly: Kira with her sharp features, Bram whose hands are still shaking, four others in various states of distress. Maren and Dav described them well.
And one familiar figure with dark hair and shoulders held rigid with fury.
Lyra.
She sees me at the same moment I see her. Her eyes widen, something cracking in her expression that might be relief or hope or desperation.
Then Matteo steps between us, calm and unhurried, like we're guests who've arrived early for an appointment.
"Ah." He studies me with cold interest. "The healer. I've heard about you."
Behind me, my team piles through the door. Luca with his shield raised. Nella clutching her pipe. Suki breathing hard, the stabilized cut on her brow still visible. Cali pressed against my leg.
We're tired. We're outnumbered. The machine at the center of the room pulses with threat.
But Lyra is alive, and I have one charge left.
"Let them go." My voice comes out steady. "All of them. Now."
Matteo raises his hand, and I feel something gather around him. A localized field that presses against my senses with familiar wrongness. Not the building-wide suppression from before. Something smaller, more focused.
Something centered on him.
My mana feels distant, muffled, like trying to reach something through thick glass. The pressure is targeted, designed to isolate rather than merely suppress.
"The thing about suppression magic," Matteo says, almost conversational, "is that it requires a focus.
Mine is built into this." He raises his wrist, showing a metal cuff that pulses with the same crystalline light as the anchors I've already destroyed.
Cables run from the cuff to the massive machine behind him.
"Connected directly to the engine. Much more efficient than wards in the walls. "
I can see it now. The cuff on his wrist, the cables that run from it to the massive machine, the way the whole system is designed to channel suppression through a living person.
"You're thinking about using that focus of yours." Matteo stops a few feet away, looking down at me with something like pity. "Go ahead. Try it."
The ward-breaker is still in my hand. One charge left. His cuff is the anchor for his personal field, not the machine itself. If I can break that connection...
I lunge forward and press the ward-breaker against his cuff.
The third charge releases.
The resonance tears through the cuff's crystal structure. Matteo stumbles backward, his personal field collapsing as the anchor shatters. But the cables connecting him to the machine are still intact, still pulsing with power.
And the machine itself is still running.
[WARD-brEAKER: Charge 3 expendedTarget: Matteo's cuff anchor (contact disruption)Personal suppression field: CollapsedSuppression engine: STILL ACTIVEConnection: Matteo remains physically linkedCharges remaining: 0That's all you get. Figure out the rest yourself.]
Magic rushes back into my immediate area, sharp and clear. I can feel everything again. But Matteo is still connected to that machine, cables running from his ruined cuff into the pulsing crystal heart of the engine.
And now he's angry.
"You think breaking my anchor changes anything?" Matteo's voice is raw with pain, but he's pulling power directly from the engine now, the cables glowing brighter. "I'm linked to this directly. You'd have to kill me to stop it."
Would I? Do I have that in me, to kill someone to save others?
The machine pulses faster, stronger. The prisoners cry out as residual suppression washes over them.
Lyra's voice cuts through the chaos, hoarse but steady. "Gregori. The cables. Can you disrupt the connection without destroying him?"
I look at Matteo, at the machine, at the glowing cables between them. My access to mana is restored, my precision is intact. Resonance Strike disrupts magical flow. Mana Precision lets me target exactly what I need.
If I hit the cables with enough focused disruption, I might be able to sever the connection. But Matteo would take some of the feedback. Maybe enough to knock him unconscious. Maybe enough to kill him.
Or maybe not enough of either, and he'd just hit me with whatever power he can still channel.
"Suki." I keep my eyes on Matteo. "Disconnect the cables and pull him clear. I strike the engine after you have him away from it."
She moves into position without a word.
Matteo's eyes widen as he realizes what we're planning. "You can't. The resonance will..."
"Will hurt." I raise my hand, mana gathering. "But not kill. Not if she's fast enough."

The level notification washes through me, but I push it aside. The prisoners are watching. Lyra is watching. The machine is still running.
One more step. One more choice.
"Ready?" I meet Suki's eyes.
She nods once, her body coiled to move.
I look at Matteo, at the fear in his face, at the machine that's been hurting people for months.
I hold the gathered spell steady. "Now."
