Cam realised with that question how deeply into personal territory they’d strayed. Generally something he tried not to do with lovers. It fostered a sense of emotional intimacy he avoided like the plague.

For this very reason. She’d just divulged a lot of information. And now she was looking at him with those huge, expressive brown eyes that seemed to see all the way down into his gut, waiting for him to do the same. Which was totally fair enough.

The tragedy of her parents’ premature deaths had caught him off guard. What she’d had to go through. How she’d stepped up and faced responsibility.

The opposite of his story. He was the product of what happened when the people who should love you most, didn’t. They walked away.

Knowing he was being a fucking coward, he just shrugged a shoulder. ‘Not much to tell. My folks weren’t on the scene. I was brought up in the system.’ Those words hid a multitude. The stain of abandonment. The loneliness of having no one to call your own.

Cam had carved out a life for himself where he needed no one, yet hearing her talk about being there for her siblings had touched him somewhere deep inside where he yearned for something he couldn’t even name.

When he didn’t say anything else, she said, ‘I’m sorry you didn’t know your folks – that’s unbelievably rough.’

Cam shrugged a little. ‘It was what it was. I survived.’

‘You shouldn’t have to survive a life though …’

Her quiet words were full of compassion and it was too much. She was straying dangerously close to places Cam had never investigated and didn’t want to.

He sat up and put his glass of wine down on a bedside table, then removed the remains of their post-sex midnight feast. She was looking at him now with something else in her eyes, something he welcomed. They’d talked enough. Too much.

Her robe was gaping open, showing a tantalising glimpse of her gorgeous breasts. He took off his robe and flung it aside, and, after making sure there was plenty of protection to hand, he lay back and put his hands behind his head.

Her avid gaze moved down over his chest, belly and to his cock, which twitched and grew hard.

Somewhere dim, Cam knew that this night was unprecedented.

No woman had ever made him so hot, horny or insatiable.

He was practically an old man! Mid-thirties!

But she made him feel like a rampant teenager all over again.

‘Take off your robe,’ he said. And then, in a rough voice, ‘I want you on top, so I can see your gorgeous body when I fuck you.’ Cam was realising he always tried to present a neater, cleaner fa?ade to women, but not this one.

She made him want to be himself around her, with all of his rough edges he usually tried to hide.

She suddenly looked a little shy, ducking her head, her hair falling forward, that thick fringe hiding her eyes.

He had to curb the urge to push it back so he could see her.

He barely knew her. She was a stranger. They didn’t even know each other’s real names.

They’d never meet again. A hollow feeling echoed inside him, but, before he could dwell on that, she was kneeling up, undoing the knot on the robe, then opening it and tugging it off, baring her sublime body to his gaze and mercifully wiping his mind clean of all thoughts but this.
