MONFUA
When I walked into the house, I spotted Sukalati curled up on the couch, crying. I didn’t even have to ask because I knew it had to be her brother. “You told him?”
She said nothing. “Sukalati, look at me.”
Eyes on me. Her tear-filled eyes screamed remorse, but the way Foe was, I knew her apologies meant nothing to him right now.
I thought about what Chevy said, and instead of asking questions, I set my bags on the counter and walked over to the couch, picked her up in my arms, and took her to the bedroom.
I removed her clothes, peeled the covers back and put her in bed.
I grabbed the remote to close my curtains, removed my clothes, and climbed in with her. I planted sweet kisses on her forehead. “I know it hurts right now, baby, but know you are now free of that weight. Now you can try to mend the relationship. He's your brother, I’m sure it will work out.”
Her sobs muffled against my chest. “It won’t. I fucked up and my brother hates me. We will never be close again.”
I had nothing to say to that because I didn’t understand. I had no siblings. I grabbed her and laid her on top of me. “Sukalati, listen to me. It will work out, and even if it doesn’t, you have me. I’m here for you. Aua le tagi,” I told her.
She let out a weak laugh. “I like it when you talk to me in Samoan.”
I raised my brow, “Do you?”
“Yes, it’s sexy.”
“I like it when you do too.”
She froze as her breathing picked up. “Like oute alofa ia te oe,” she said, like she was fluent.
“Is that how you feel?” I asked her.
She smiled. “I said it didn’t, I?”
“Oute alofa fo’i ia oe.”
She laughed. “Wait, you added something in there.”
I kissed her lips. “I said I love you too, and I do, Sukalati. I love you.”
I stroked her back as we lay talking. I thought today would be the perfect time to do the things I wanted for her, but with the shit that happened with her brother, I decided to hold off.
Both our phones vibrated simultaneously.
She leaned one way to grab her phone, and I leaned the other way to grab mine.
“Shit. I need to go give my mother the rental back. She wants to hang out before she leaves.”
“Chevy is calling a meet-up. I swear that nigga timing be off, fuck.”
I could hear her laugh. “You’re a Zoo boy now.
Chevy is tough, but that’s one nigga I know that’s going to have your back no matter what.
Go, we will meet back here later, and maybe I can get another taste of that island dick,” she said as she got out of bed.
“Yo daddy knew what he was doing. Goddamn.” She laughed as she entered the bathroom.
Lakia laughed as if she were okay, but I knew she was probably crying in the shower. Linking with the guys was a good idea. It was time for Foe and me to have that talk, not only for me but also for my wife.
