Chapter 131

We stayed in each other's arms for a long, long time. How long exactly? Who was counting?

Eventually, reality began creeping back in, along with the rather inconvenient reminder that we were still standing in the middle of an ancient sanctuary with a Heartforge fragment waiting somewhere nearby.

Reluctantly, Rhaevan stepped back, though the quiet adoration in his eyes remained as he reached for my hand. Our fingers intertwined naturally, fitting together so easily that it almost felt as though they had always belonged that way.

I looked down at our joined hands for a moment before meeting his eyes again.

There was still a strange sense of disbelief settling somewhere inside me.

Just yesterday, I had been convinced that, once this journey was over, I would have to walk away from him so that he could be happy with someone else.

I had spent so much time trying to convince myself that loving him meant eventually letting him go, and yet here I was, standing beside him with our fingers intertwined,

while the man I had spent so long trying not to love was looking at me as though he had finally been given permission to love me back.

The compass pulsed again, drawing my attention toward it.

I sighed and glanced at the glowing device. "Fine. Let's go find the next fragment."

Rhaevan gave my hand a gentle squeeze. "Together."

A smile tugged at my lips as I squeezed his hand in return. "Together."

With that, we turned toward the glowing compass and began walking through the ruins, our hands still intertwined.

We still had a mission to finish, an ancient relic to find, and one final fragment waiting somewhere beyond the mist. There were dangers ahead, questions we had yet to answer, and probably several opportunities for my life to become unnecessarily complicated.

But for the first time since this journey had begun, I wasn't walking beside Rhaevan wondering whether I was going to lose him.

I was simply walking beside the man I loved.

The compass led us deeper into the Sanctuary of the Fallen, past another stretch of broken memorials, until the ruins gradually began to change.

The crumbling walls eventually gave way to something far larger, and ahead of us stood a massive stone entrance that was almost completely concealed beneath layers of ivy and moss.

Unlike the rest of the sanctuary, the structure surrounding it had remained strangely intact, as though time itself had somehow spared this particular place.

Rhaevan stepped closer to the entrance, and I followed him.

Beyond it stretched a vast hall. I stopped at the threshold, tilting my head back as I tried to see where the ceiling ended, but it disappeared into darkness far above us.

Enormous stone pillars lined both sides of the chamber, supporting the ancient structure, while intricate carvings covered the walls.

Their details had been worn down by centuries of age, but they were still visible beneath the layers of dust that coated the stone.

At the very centre of the hall stood a single pedestal.

There was nothing else around it, just one stone pedestal standing beneath the enormous, empty space.

The compass needle pointed directly toward it.

"Okay. I think the fragment is there." I glanced around the hall suspiciously before adding, "But would it really be this easy?"

"Stay here, Cassie. I'll check for traps."

Rhaevan stepped into the hall, moving carefully as he scanned the surroundings for concealed magic.

After a moment, he raised one hand and sent a wave of magic through the chamber.

The spell spread across the hall, passing over the pillars, walls, and floor as it searched for anything that might pose a threat.

We waited.

Nothing happened.

After several minutes, Rhaevan finally looked back at me and gave me a reassuring nod.

Only then did I take a cautious step inside.

The moment my foot crossed the threshold, something changed.

A strange sensation stirred deep within the hall, reaching into a place inside me that I hadn't even known existed.

It felt like a call, almost like a song carrying the ache of something lost, something that belonged to me, and something that had been waiting for me to find my way back to it.

My eyes filled with tears before I could understand why, and suddenly, the enormous hall around me seemed to disappear from my awareness.

All I could see was the pedestal standing at its centre, and I found myself unable to think about anything else.

Something was drawing me toward it.

I moved forward, and with every step, the sensation grew stronger. It was as though something had known I was coming long before I ever set foot inside the sanctuary and had been patiently waiting for me to arrive.

"Cassiane?"

Rhaevan's voice came from behind me, but I barely heard him.

My feet continued carrying me forward, almost as though they were moving on their own, until I reached the steps leading up to the pedestal.

The moment I placed my foot on the first step, a sharp pulse of light spread across the floor, racing outward from beneath me.

I climbed the remaining steps, and as soon as I reached the top, a circular pattern of ancient runes appeared beneath the pedestal.

"Cassiane!"

I turned toward Rhaevan and saw that a translucent barrier had formed between us. He stood on the other side, striking his palm against the invisible wall as he desperately tried to reach me.

I wanted to tell him that everything was all right. I wanted to reach for him and reassure him, but I couldn't seem to make myself move. Something was happening to me, and I no longer felt entirely in control of my own thoughts.

Slowly, I turned back toward the pedestal and placed the compass into the depression.

The instant it touched the stone, the runes beneath it blazed with brilliant light.

"Cassie, please, look at me. Don't go any further. Please, Cassie... please."

His voice was tense with urgency, and every part of me wanted to listen to him. I really did. But something inside me refused to let me turn away.

It felt as though I had spent my entire life searching for something without ever knowing what I was looking for, and now, after all these years, it was finally within reach.

A single word surfaced in my mind before I could stop it.

Home.

My throat tightened as the realization settled over me.

I'm home.

I didn't understand why the thought felt so natural. I had never seen this place before. I had never been here, and yet something deep within me recognized it in a way my mind couldn't explain.

"Cassiane, look at me."

Rhaevan's voice trembled with urgency, but it gradually faded into the background until I could no longer hear him. My attention remained fixed on the compass as the circle beneath the pedestal brightened, causing the ancient stone to come alive.

Runes spread across its surface, glowing with a soft golden light, while the stone beneath the compass shifted with a deep grinding sound. A narrow opening appeared, and the compass lifted slightly from its place as something hidden within the chamber began to emerge.

A jagged crystal rose from the darkness, glowing with a deep red light. Its glow pulsed softly, almost like a heartbeat, before the fragment lifted from the chamber and floated toward the compass.

A sharp click echoed through the hall as it settled perfectly into the third slot.

The moment it connected, the compass blazed with light.

I stared at it, but the strange calling within me didn't fade. Instead, it grew stronger, spreading through every part of my body until I felt an almost unbearable need to move closer.

Tears slipped down my cheeks without me noticing, and somewhere beneath my feet, I felt the stone begin to shift. The floor beneath me slowly rose, carrying the pedestal upward and lifting me higher into the enormous hall.

Somewhere far below, I could hear Rhaevan calling my name, but I couldn't bring myself to turn away. My eyes remained fixed on the glowing compass as the ancient stone beneath it suddenly split apart.

With a deep rumble, the pedestal broke into three sections that slowly slid away from one another, revealing something hidden beneath it. A structure made of dark stone began to rise from the opening, and at its centre rested a red, glowing, diamond-shaped object.

The moment I saw it, something inside me told me to touch it.

I reached out slowly, my fingers trembling as they moved toward the glowing crystal, until finally, my fingertips made contact with its surface.
