34. Ollie
Ollie
There’s something different in the air.
As soon as Nate and Rory step into the house, I can sense it. I can usually tell when things are different, of course, like when Rory came home from the hospital.
But this time is different.
There’s no stress or pain or worry or sadness.
Just joy and excitement, so contagious that I can hardly control my wagging tail.
“She said yes, Ollie!” Nate announces proudly. A grin stretches across his face. “What do you think about that?”
Rory has stars in her eyes as she looks at Nate and giggles. “Ollie probably won’t like it once he realizes that Spam is going to be sticking around.”
“Nah. He and Ollie are buddies. Right, boy?”
I lick Nate’s hand in response, and he rubs my head.
“Good boy,” he says. “Now, if you don’t mind, I’m going to take my bride-to-be upstairs.”
Rory bites her lip. “Nate, I…I still can’t…you know.”
I don’t know what she’s talking about, but Nate seems to because he’s grinning as he pulls her into a hug.
“Who said anything about that?” he says, lifting her into his arms. “I just want to spend every minute I can with my fiancée.”
The two of them disappear up the stairs, and I return to my bed, turning around a few times to make sure it’s perfect before I settle in.
Laughter floats down from the upstairs bedroom as I close my eyes.
Spam is going to be so happy with how things are going.
I can’t wait to see that little guy.
