Chapter 48

Forty-Eight

Axel

I tried door after door with no luck in finding Charlie and Molly. I had just about given up hope when I reached the last door and found it locked. It seemed weird that it would be locked when all the others had been unlocked, which hopefully meant this was where Charlie was.

I wanted to knock on the door and tell her I was there and that she would be okay, but I had no idea whether she was alone. The last thing I wanted to do was alert someone to my presence and have them harm Charlie or Molly in response.

I glanced down the hall, making sure I was still by myself before bending to look at the lock.

There wasn’t time to try to pick it, which meant I would have to shoot it open since the door was metal and there was no way I could kick it down.

I looked up at the ceiling and sent up a prayer before I pointed my gun and fired a shot.
