I sat in my truck, shivering because I refused to turn it on and waste gas. The last thing I needed was for it to run out when I needed to go somewhere—like back to Jo’s to keep her safe.

I knew she was still pissed at me and probably would be for quite some time.

I hadn’t meant to piss her off, but I also couldn’t tell her about Lauren or that I’d been in touch with Tray.

I didn’t blame her for not trusting me after this, but I would go to my grave doing everything in my power to keep her and my sister safe from Tray and his entire organization, even if it meant keeping things a secret from her.

The snow fell in waves around me, almost camouflaging my truck and making it impossible to see.

I didn’t know where to go after I left Jo’s, but I knew better than to stick around by her house because I feared she’d come out and slash my tires before going after my throat next.

I’d come to the bar and sighed in relief when I went to the door and found Axel inside.

I didn’t fill him in on what happened since we still needed as few people to know about Lauren as possible.

But I did tell him that Jo was pissed off at me and that I was going to hang out in the parking lot until she cooled down.

He laughed and let me hang out in the bar with him for an hour before he had to leave to get home to Charlie and Molly.

I didn’t want to take on the responsibility of getting everything closed up properly when he left, so I headed for my truck and asked him to let Keith know where I was since I didn’t have my phone.

My bones hurt from the cold, my teeth chattering when I spotted Keith’s truck pull up beside me. He climbed out, leaving the truck on, as he approached my truck. I rolled down the window, gasping as a rush of blistery cold wind whipped me in the face.

“Thought you might want this back,” he said, pulling my phone out of his pocket and handing it to me.

“I’m surprised it’s in one piece.”

“Probably only because she thought she could get me to unlock it for her.”

“Did you?” I arched an eyebrow as I held the phone in my hand.

“Nope.” He looked from me out to the empty parking lot where the snow continued to fall heavily.

“Then I guess I’m surprised you’re still in one piece,” I teased, desperately wanting to know everything that happened and how Jo was feeling.

He chuckled and looked at me, a seriousness washing over his face and quickly erasing any signs of humor.

“I told her about Lauren and that you’d been in contact with Tray because you’re working with the FBI to bring him down,” he said. “She’s still pissed, and rightfully so. Give her some time to cool off before you try to talk to her.”

“Thanks. I’ll be sure to do that.”

He tapped his hand on my door twice before turning to walk away. He stopped and looked at me over his shoulder, a deadly look in his eyes.

“You better not fuck me over,” he threatened. “If you fuck this up, all of our agreements will be null and void. I will personally see to it that you do time.”

I blew out a heavy breath and nodded.

I knew how hard it was for him to trust me because I had an even harder time trusting him or any of the other so-called good guys he worked with. But Lauren’s life was on the line, which meant I was going to do everything I could to save her.
