Thirty-Six

Jo

Telling Dom about Kaitlyn had been oddly comforting for me.

I hadn’t told anyone about the pregnancy or that I had a baby that I abandoned when I was only fifteen years old.

I was the only one who knew her name, which was how I always kept her safe.

Occasionally, I fought the urge to talk about her because I wanted her to fill that void in my heart that had always been there since the day I said goodbye to her.

But I knew that if I wanted to protect her, I had to pretend she didn’t exist.

Dom ordered room service for breakfast so we didn’t have to risk leaving the hotel room.

Since things had been so hectic, we decided that it was best to stay put until Keith’s team could confirm where Tray and his men were.

There was no doubt they could track Dom’s phone to our exact location, which was why the hotel was currently under surveillance by several private security agents.

I sat back on the bed and flipped through the channels on the TV while Dom took a shower.

While it would have been fun to join him, I was still too exhausted and didn’t have the energy for anything other than staying awake.

Even that felt hard at times. Dr. Foster assured me that it might take a few days for my body to recover to the point that I felt like my old self, and to try not to rush it.

I, on the other hand, was more concerned with healing as quickly as possible before my ex-husband had the opportunity to sneak up on me and kill me.

Just as the shower turned off, there was a knock on the door.

I set the remote down as I looked warily at the door, then at the bathroom.

There was a good chance that Dom hadn’t heard the knock.

I didn’t want to call out to him either, because there was no way to know who was on the other side of the door.

Even if Tray’s guys had found us, that didn’t mean we had to make it easy for them to kill us.

“It’s Keith,” he said loudly, his voice carrying enough through the door that I could recognize it.

I sat on the bed, refusing to move. Just because Keith was there didn’t mean we were safe. There was nothing to confirm that he wasn’t being held against his will by someone trying to get into the room to get to me.

“I need to update both of you on something. Call me when you’re free,” he continued as Dom opened the bathroom door and looked from me to the door.

His hair was dripping wet as beads of water rolled down his chest and dipped under the towel that hung loosely around his hips. I tried to focus on what was happening, but the outline of his cock beneath the towel had me distracted in the worst way.

He arched an eyebrow at me and then nodded to the door.

I shrugged, refusing to say anything because I still had no idea if it was safe.

Dom grabbed his gun from the counter and pushed the furniture away from the door before he looked through the peephole. Once satisfied, he slowly opened the door, keeping the gun aimed as Keith stepped forward and raised his hands.

“I’m alone,” Keith said. “We need to talk.”

Dom leaned forward, checking the hallway before stepping aside and allowing Keith inside the room. Once secured, Dom closed and locked the door, pushing the furniture back into place to barricade it again.

“I’m not judging what you two do in your free time,” Keith said with a raised eyebrow as he looked from me to Dom. “But if you could put some clothes on, that would be great.”

Dom rolled his eyes but went back to the bathroom to get dressed. Once the door closed, I let out a nervous breath. Keith was tense, and I could tell that whatever he was there to tell us wasn’t good.

“We weren’t doing anything,” I said, more to break the silence than anything, because I couldn’t stand the tension that was already mounting. “He just took a shower.”

“I know.” Keith smirked. “I just like giving him shit.”

I leaned back against the pillows I had propped myself up on the bed and tried to relax, even though it was impossible. A few minutes later, Dom joined us, standing against the wall with his arms folded over his chest.

“I have some news,” Keith said, pushing out a heavy sigh as he shoved a hand through his hair.

“Okay,” I replied nervously. “Just tell us.”

“Someone moved in and attacked Tray’s compound last night. Multiple casualties, but no sign of Tray or a few of his men who are higher up in the organization. It was a total blood bath.”

“Okay...” Dom said with a hint of apprehension.

We both knew there was more than what Keith was telling us.

Keith lowered his head and shook it before he looked up at Dom.

“A body was left outside of the clinic this morning in Nowhere,” Keith said, glancing at me. “Dr. Foster called and reported it a few minutes ago.”

I gasped as I covered my mouth with my hands, tears filling my eyes because I could already tell this was going to be bad.

“She sent me a picture,” Keith said, swallowing hard as he locked eyes with Dom. “I was able to confirm that it was Lauren.”
