Six Months Later
“Over there is perfect,” I said to Dom as he arranged the patio furniture for me.
It was finally warm enough to want to spend time outside, and I was beyond in love with our ginormous backyard.
Three months ago, we bought our house after months of searching for the perfect one.
A new part of town was being developed, and we were lucky to grab one of the last three houses before they sold.
And, just as fate would have it, Dr. Easton purchased the house next door to us so Kaitlyn could come and go between the two houses as she pleased.
Having Kaitlyn in my life had been one of the best things that had ever happened to me, along with getting married, buying a new house, and planning for our baby due in a few months. Dom had been over the moon when we found out I was pregnant, and Kaitlyn was ecstatic to be a big sister.
Bailey had taken a new job that required her to move, so she asked if we would adopt Opal since she was moving into an apartment that didn’t allow pets.
Not only that, her job would keep her so busy that she wouldn't be able to give Opal the attention she needed.
Part of our wedding gift was a basket filled with treats and toys for Opal to enjoy in her new home.
Things were working out perfectly, and Dr. Easton had quickly become best friends with Dr. Foster.
They both worked at the clinic, and Dr. Easton had gotten to know Macie after she came in one day, fighting for her life after her brother attacked her.
Charges were filed against her brother, and Dr. Easton had gone through all of the necessary steps to obtain guardianship through a court-ordered kinship guardianship petition.
Macie and Kaitlyn had become inseparable, and I loved that Macie was getting the love and support she needed.
“I think it looks good,” Dom said as he came and stood behind me, rubbing his hands over my stomach.
“Me too. I can’t wait to have everyone over this weekend for a BBQ. We’ve had way too much cold and snow, so I’m ready to lie out here and cook under the sun for a bit.”
“Not too much, we don’t want you to overcook that baby,” he teased right as the baby kicked.
“I think she’s already disagreeing with you.” I turned and grinned at him over my shoulder.
“I’m getting overrun by girls,” he muttered, shaking his head as he struggled not to smile.
Opal whimpered as she dropped her favorite toy at his feet and waited for him to throw it. We both looked down at her as she tilted her head from side to side, impatiently waiting for him.
“See what I mean?” he said as he picked it up and launched it across the grass.
She took off running to grab it as my phone rang in my pocket. I pulled it out, checked the caller ID, and answered it.
“If you’re calling to complain about how long it takes to smoke a brisket, I don’t—” I started, teasing him because Keith was as impatient as Opal when it came to food.
“I need your help,” he rushed out, the panic in his voice immediately putting me on alert.
“What’s wrong?”
“Someone tried to kill Ashley.”
