9. Braving New Frontiers
Braving New Frontiers
Samantha
The call I received last night shakes me more than I want to admit.
It lasts forever—or at least it feels that way. Even after it ends, the tension lingers, curling in the pit of my stomach like something alive. My old boss’s threats used to send me spiraling—fearful, uncertain, trapped.
But not anymore.
I set my phone down, exhaling slowly as I stare out at the ranch, bathed in soft moonlight. The steady hum of crickets, the rustling trees, the open land—it all grounds me, reminding me where I am. Who I am now.
If she thinks she can intimidate me into compliance, she has no idea what I’ve become since leaving that life behind.
This place, this life… it’s not something I’m willing to let go of.
Morning arrives crisp and cool, the air buzzing with energy as preparations for the showcase kick into high gear.
Inside the main house, Emmy is already at the kitchen table, chattering between mouthfuls of pancakes.
“Samantha! Daddy said we can start on the banner today!”
“That’s exciting,” I say, ruffling her hair as I grab a plate. “But I need breakfast first. Gotta fuel up for all that glitter and glue.”
Drake steps into the kitchen, setting a stack of papers on the counter before pouring himself coffee. His presence—steady and warm—feels like the perfect contrast to the storm still brewing in my mind.
“Morning,” he says, his voice smooth and easy.
“Morning,” I reply, sliding into my seat beside Emmy.
Drake studies me for a beat before taking a sip of coffee. “You look determined.”
I meet his gaze. “I’ve decided not to let the past win.”
His lips curve slightly, something flickering in his expression—understanding, maybe admiration.
“Good,” he says simply. “Because you’ve got a lot worth fighting for here.”
Emmy and I spend the morning in the barn, surrounded by markers, glitter, and fabric scraps as we design the banner. She bubbles with ideas, her little hands moving excitedly as she sketches out the words: Willow Creek Showcase!
“Do you think everyone will like it?” she asks, eyes full of hope.
I glance at her work—a vibrant explosion of colors. “They’re going to love it, Emmy. It’s perfect.”
Her face lights up, and for a moment, the weight of my past fades just a little more.
Drake joins us soon after, carrying a box of decorations. “Found these in the storage shed. Thought they might come in handy.”
“Perfect timing,” I say, rummaging through the contents. “These will be great for the pony parade.”
Drake chuckles. “She’s been talking about that nonstop.”
“She’s got big plans,” I tease, glancing at Emmy as she carefully adds finishing touches to the banner.
“She gets that from you,” Drake says, his tone softer now.
The comment catches me off guard. My heart skips. “I think she gets it from both of us.”
A quiet moment stretches between us—something unspoken, yet understood.
By midday, the ranch is a hive of activity. Tom and the ranch hands work on setting up extra stalls while Drake and I string decorations along the fences. Excitement hums in the air, but beneath it, my mind still flickers back to the phone call.
Drake must sense it because as we adjust the lights in the barn rafters, he gives me a long look.
“You sure you’re okay?”
I nod, forcing a smile. “Just a lot on my mind.”
His gaze lingers before he nods. “If you need to talk…”
“I know,” I say softly. And I do.
But talking means letting him in even more. And that might be scarier than anything else.
After lunch, Emmy insists on practicing the pony parade route. She’s created a hand-drawn map, complete with a list of parade rules that she reads aloud with all the authority of a seasoned event planner.
Drake and I lean against the fence, watching as she leads Daisy around the paddock. Her laughter rings out, bright and unburdened.
“She’s amazing,” I say, warmth swelling in my chest.
“She is,” Drake agrees. “She’s been through a lot, but she never lets it hold her back.”
“She’s resilient,” I muse, glancing at him. “Wonder where she gets that from.”
Drake chuckles, shaking his head. “She’s a force of nature, that’s for sure.”
I smile, but something tugs at me—an ache that wasn’t there before.
Watching him watch her, seeing the love in his eyes, the quiet devotion in the way he talks about her…
This is a man who loves deeply. A man who doesn’t give his heart away lightly.
And that thought unsettles me more than I’d like to admit.
As the evening sun casts long shadows, we gather on the porch to finalize the showcase plans. Emmy sits cross-legged on the steps, doodling pictures of Daisy while Drake and I go over the final schedule.
“This is really coming together,” I say, scanning the checklist.
Drake leans back against the railing, watching me. “It’s because of you. You’ve done more for this ranch in a few months than I thought possible.”
I glance up, caught off guard by the sincerity in his voice. “It’s not just me,” I say quietly. “This place has a way of bringing out the best in people.”
His gaze doesn’t waver. “It does. But it’s different with you.”
The intensity in his words sends a ripple through me—warm and terrifying all at once.
I open my mouth to respond, but the moment slips away as Emmy announces, “I finished my picture!”
Drake shifts, his attention moving to his daughter, and just like that, the air between us shifts again.
Later that night, as I sit in the guesthouse, my phone buzzes on the table.
I don’t need to look at the screen to know who it is.
I inhale deeply before picking it up. “Samantha Rivers.”
A slow, condescending voice oozes through the speaker.
“Well, Ms. Rivers. I see you finally decided to answer.”
I keep my tone even. “What do you want?”
“Your cooperation,” she replies smoothly. “We need to resolve this situation. I’d hate for things to get… messy.”
A chill creeps up my spine, but I don’t let it show. “I’m not taking the blame for something I didn’t do.”
Her sigh is exaggerated, dripping with false patience. “Then I suggest you prepare for the consequences.”
The line goes dead.
I stare at my phone, my pulse pounding.
For a long time, I let fear dictate my choices. I let people like her push me into corners, make me feel small.
But not anymore. I set the phone down, my hands steady.
Looking out the window, my gaze drifts toward the main house. The warm glow from the porch spills onto the ground, a quiet reminder of everything I have here.
This ranch, this life, these people—they are worth fighting for.
I reach for my notebook, flipping it open to my plans for the showcase.
There’s still work to do, a future to build, and I refuse to let anyone take that from me.
Whatever comes next, I won’t back down.
I’m not going down without a fight.
