3. Studio Tour #2
My whole body went hot from recognition. Like he'd said a word in a language I'd been dreaming in but never spoken aloud. My clit pulsed so hard I almost gasped.
"I don't... that's not..." I shook my head. Swallowed. "I've never done anything...”
"I know." He didn't push. Didn't move closer. Didn't touch me. Just stood there with his hands at his sides and that knowing look on his face. Patient. Like he had the rest of his life to wait for me to catch up to what he already saw.
I looked away. Looked at the chair. The restraints. The mirror.
A woman who wants to be obeyed.
Every boyfriend I'd ever had called me passive. Every lover said I was too quiet in bed, too accommodating, too willing to go along with whatever they wanted. And I'd believed them. I'd believed I was the problem. That my silence meant I didn't want anything.
But what if my silence wasn't passivity?
What if it was patience?
What if you've been waiting to be the one who gives the orders, and nobody ever put you in a room where that was allowed?
I looked back at Jarvis. He hadn't moved.
"I don't know what I want," I said. Honest. Bare.
"That's fine." He turned and walked to a cabinet built into the far wall. Black wood, floor to ceiling, no visible handle. He pressed a spot and it clicked open.
Inside: shelves lined in black velvet. And on them, arranged with the precision of a jeweler's case, were items I could barely process.
The cobalt silk rope, but a different length than the one on the rack. This one was softer. Finer.
A longer piece beside it. Thinner. For more complex work. Ties that wound and wound until the body beneath was held, wrapped, gift and restraint at once.
A blindfold that matched the rope. Cobalt silk, not black. His color. His personal signature, I noted.
More clamps. Smaller and adjustable with no chain.
A leather belt. Supple, well worn, doubled over on the shelf. I knew it would leave marks that faded to memory by morning.
Metal plugs. Four sizes. Polished steel, catching the light, teardrop shaped.
A glass dildo. Clear, with a spiral ridge running its length. Beautiful as sculpture. Functional as a weapon.
Wireless earbuds. Plain, black. I frowned at them.
"Sensory deprivation," he said without looking at me. "White noise. Takes away sound. When you can't hear, can't see, the only thing left is what you feel.”
My breath came shallow. Quick. I could feel my heartbeat in my temples. In my wrists. Between my legs, steady and insistent as a second pulse.
"This is mine," he said. "Nothing in here touches a client. Ever." He ran his thumb along the silk rope without picking it up. "These are the things I use when it's personal."
Personal.
The air in the room was thick. I could hear the faint hum of the lights. The distant bass of traffic outside. My own breathing, which had gone shallow without my permission.
"Why are you showing me this?" I asked.
He closed the cabinet. Turned to face me fully. Leaned against the wall with his arms crossed. The posture should have been closed off but it wasn't. It was an offering. It was him saying: I'm right here. Unarmed and waiting.
"Because you texted me at two in the morning, Nailah." His voice was gentle. Not condescending. Genuine. "Women don't do that because they're curious about photography. You want something you can’t name, and I'm offering you the space to figure it out."
"And what do you get out of it?"
The question came out sharper than I intended. A reflex. Protection.
He didn't flinch. "Something I've never had."
"Which is what?"
"Someone who takes." He said it simply. The tension in his jaw telling me it cost him everything.
"I've spent my entire life giving women what they want.
Directing. Leading. Controlling the frame.
And I'm good at it. But nobody has ever...
" He stopped. Looked at the ceiling. Then back at me. "Nobody has ever made me the subject."
The silence that followed was alive. It had a pulse. It pressed against my skin.
"If you want to learn what you're capable of," he said, "my office hours are open."
I almost laughed. Not because it was funny but because the phrase was so simple, so ordinary, for something that felt like standing at the edge of a cliff.
"What does that mean? Practically."
"It means we do this in here. Only in here." He pushed off the wall. Walked to the center of the room and stood on the black mat. "Sessions. Structured. You come when you want to. You leave when you want to. Nothing happens that you don't initiate. Nothing."
"And Malik?"
His jaw tightened. Just barely. "Doesn't know. Can't know. Not because we're doing something wrong, but because if your brother is in this room with us, even in your head, you won't be free. And the whole point is freedom."
He was right. I hated that he was right. If I was thinking about Malik's reaction, I'd never stop performing. I'd be the good sister, the appropriate woman, the girl who doesn't want things that make people uncomfortable.
"What are the rules?" I heard myself say.
Jarvis's eyes darkened with respect.
"Sessions happen here. Nowhere else. What happens in this room doesn't follow us out. When you walk out that door, everything returns to normal.”
He held up one finger, then another. "You choose when. You choose what. You choose how far. I don't touch you unless you tell me to. I don't speak unless you tell me to. I don't move unless you let me."
A third finger.
"And the most important one." He looked at me with an intensity that made my knees soft. "You're in charge. Of everything. Every session, every second, every breath in this room belongs to you. I'm not your teacher. I'm not your dom. I'm your subject. You're the one behind the camera now."
My hands were shaking. This felt like the first deep breath after being underwater too long.
You're in charge. Of everything.
No one had ever said that to me. Not once. Not in bed. Not in life. Not in any version of any relationship I'd ever had. I'd been handed choices my whole life the way a restaurant hands you a menu: pick from what's available, don't ask for substitutions, and be grateful for the meal.
This wasn't a menu.
This was a blank page.
“Before we go any further." He held up his hand.
"Colors. This is how we communicate during anything physical.
Green means go, I'm good, keep pushing. Yellow means slow down, I'm approaching my limit, check in with me.
Red means stop. Everything stops. Immediately.
No questions, no negotiation, no 'are you sure. ' Red is absolute."
He looked at me. Direct.
"If I ever ask you 'what's your color,' you answer honestly. Not what you think I want to hear. Not what makes you look tough. What you actually feel in that moment. And if you ever say red, I will never ask why. I will just stop. Do you understand?"
"Yes."
"Say them back to me."
"Green means go. Yellow means slow down. Red means stop."
"Good." He nodded once. "Those three words keep this safe. Everything else is negotiable. Those aren't."
"One more thing." His voice shifted. Harder. Something in the room changed, the air pressure dropping. He stepped forward. Three steps. Closing the distance between us until he was right there, in my space, closer than he'd been all morning, close enough that I could count the freckles on his jaw.
His hand came up.
Slow. Deliberate. Giving me time to stop him. I didn't.
His fingers wrapped around my throat.
The pressure of his palm against my pulse. His fingers curving around the sides of my neck. His thumb resting against the hollow of my throat where my heartbeat hammered so hard he had to feel it. My whole body went rigid. Then liquid. Then something between the two that didn't have a name.
He leaned down. His mouth close to my ear. His breath warm on the side of my neck.
"In here," he said, "you're in charge. Every word. Every breath. I don't move without your say. That's the room. That's the rule. That's yours."
His hand tightened, just enough for me to feel the boundary of his fingers. Enough for my knees to soften and my lips to part and a sound to almost escape that I swallowed back.
"But out here?" His thumb stroked my pulse once.
"Out here, I'm in charge. You do as I say.
When I tell you something, you do it. When I give you an instruction, you follow it.
No questions. No hesitation." His voice dropped lower.
A register I'd never heard from him. Something that lived in the basement of his chest. "Do you understand? "
I couldn't nod. His hand held me still. I couldn't look away. His eyes were two inches from mine, dark and absolute and asking nothing, because this wasn't a question. It was a statement of fact.
"Yes," I whispered.
"Good." He held my throat for one more second. Two. Long enough for me to feel the full weight of what I'd just agreed to. Long enough for me to feel how wet I was, how swollen, how my body was screaming for something his hand on my neck had only made worse.
Then he kissed me.
His mouth found mine with certainty. Confirming.
His tongue pushed past my lips without asking, licking into my mouth with a slow, filthy deliberation that made my knees buckle.
I grabbed his shirt. Fisted the fabric at his chest because if I didn't hold something, I was going to collapse.
He kissed me the way you eat something you've been starving for.
Tongue deep, jaw wide, his hand still on my throat holding me exactly where he wanted me while he took what he wanted from my mouth.
I moaned. Couldn't help it. The sound vibrated against his tongue and he swallowed it.
Took that too. His free hand found my ass, gripped hard enough to bruise through denim, pulled me flush against him so I could feel him.
All of him. Hard against my stomach. Thick and insistent and making no apology for it.
