18. Finley #3
I could see how hard Zander was trying not to explode at this, but he kept silent as I kissed each of them before getting into the SUV.
Zander made sure I was buckled and gave me one more kiss before shutting the door.
He stood there watching as the vehicle drove away, furious at his mother and Peter for doing this to him.
In an effort to distract him, I sent all of them an image of James from the memory I saw in Tabitha’s mind. “Seems my other father has been keeping tabs on me as well and ended up becoming a vampire of all things.”
“Finley, I’ve met this man before,” Elias informed me. “The night the attack happened, he came looking for you. He kept demanding that we hand you over, but I believe at that point, you’d already fled the tunnels. Why would he be looking for you?”
“I don’t have all the information on that yet, but Tabitha was working with him. She believed he was part of the Senate but later learned he wasn’t. I’m hoping to ask her more about it later when we don’t have Peter around.” I explained.
“Please be careful,” Zander pleaded. “I trust my mother, but I don’t trust Peter. Maybe it’s because he’s always tried to be a father to me, but I just have never felt he was safe.”
“Don’t worry, we will keep our woman safe,” Elias assured the others. “This whole thing reeks of a trap, but we need the information that Delilah will give us too badly not to chance it.”
Elias was right. The plan I had worked for only so long until they learned what I was doing.
The closer I got to the top of the pyramid, the more they would close ranks, making it harder for me to get to them.
These people had all the money and power in the world to hide and hide well.
I could get one or two more attacks in before they started to be concerned and figured out they were being attacked strategically.
Right now, it was so random, and the people weren’t that valued. It was slipping through the cracks.
To bring down the Dark Ring, I was gonna need to hit hard and fast when the time was right. The information to do that lay with Delilah. Part of me was looking forward to this, knowing that I was going to keep my promise and end her, but I got some retribution as well.
The drive took about a half hour and we ended up in an abandoned barn on the property, well off the beaten path.
No one would find us here unless they knew just where to look.
Even the screams I’m sure Delilah would be letting out wouldn’t be heard by anything but the trees.
Thankfully their loyalty was to me, so I wasn’t worried at all.
Two men dressed all in black tactical gear stood outside the barn doors giving me pause.
“What’s with the mercenaries?” I asked as Peter brought the car to a stop.
He looked at me in the rearview. “You didn’t think we were just going to leave her here with that gorilla alone, did you? The senator has her own personal security we’ve built up over time for situations like this. They can be trusted to keep their mouths shut, or I’ll kill them.”
“That’ll do it,” Derven quipped. “Nothing like the fear of death to keep you in line. Works every time I’ve done it, but it becomes a gray area when it’s applied to other vampires… seeing as we’re already dead and all.”
Peter turned in his chair to look at Derven, then me. “When did you add the bloodsucker to your group of fuck boys?”
Elias snarled and Derven hissed at the implications. I sent them each a subtle warning to calm down and responded to Peter’s venom, “Why?” I questioned, cocking my head. “Are you afraid Morwyn might like the idea of having more than one man in her life?”
Peter’s face started to turn red as he fought to keep his anger from exploding on me. I wasn’t concerned, Peter might be head of security, but I could tell he was a lazy fighter used to having people to order about.
“I’d be careful, bitch. Omega or not, I’ll teach you your place in the pack,” he bit out.
I shoved open my door and stepped out only to glance back at him.
“If you can get past them, I’d love to see you try and lay a finger on me.
Out of respect for Morwyn, I’d try not to hurt you too badly, but it seems you have no respect for those who are deadlier than you.
That might cause your life expectancy to shrink considerably one of these days. ”
Derven and Elias flanked me as I strode across the grass to the barn, Tabitha leading the way.
She’d remained silent the whole time and I couldn’t tell if she was upset with me or not.
Even when I tried to feel her emotions, she’d buried them so deepIy, I couldn’t get any sense of them.
Was this what it was like for Rath when we first bonded? No wonder he was so upset.
The two guards looked at the three of us with curiosity but didn’t say a word as Tabitha brushed past them and entered the barn.
There, under two gas-powered flood lights, Delilah and her pet gorilla were expertly tied to chairs, looking worse for the wear.
Delilah looked up at our entrance and met my gaze with wide, shocked eyes.
“Hello there, long time no see,” I greeted.
