42. Kaia
Chapter Forty-Two
Kaia
The drive home is quiet. Not uncomfortable.
Just full, like we've already said everything that needed saying.
And now we're just existing together. Jonas's hand rests on the console between us.
Palm up. Open. I slide my fingers into his without thinking.
He squeezes gently. Once. Then just holds on.
I watch the streetlights pass overhead, their glow casting shadows across his face. His jaw is relaxed. His breathing steady. He looks peaceful.
And I realize I am, too.
The house is dark when we pull up. Not completely, the light above the front door is on. But it’s quiet. The kind of quiet that means everyone's either asleep or out.
Jonas turns off the engine. Sits there for a moment.
Looking at the house. Then at me. When he gets out, he walks around the car, opens my door.
I take his hand, step out, and follow him inside.
The house smells like home now. Not just theirs.
Mine too. Jonas locks the door behind us. Quiet. Deliberate. Then turns to me.
"Come with me?"
It’s not really a question. More like an invitation.
I nod.
He takes my hand again. Leads me through the house. Past the living room. Past the kitchen. Up the stairs. To his room. I've been in here before. But not like this. Never with intention.
The door closes softly behind us. And suddenly, the air feels different. Heavier. Warmer. Charged. Jonas doesn't move right away. Just stands there. Looking at me.
"I can't let you go," he says quietly.
I swallow hard. "What?"
"Tonight," he says. "I don't want you to leave. I don't want you to go back to your room. I just…" He stops. Exhales. "I can't let you go."
A quiet warmth spreads through me.
"Then don't."
His eyes search mine. Like he's making sure. Like he needs to hear it again.
"I mean it," I say softly. "I don't want to leave either."
Relief washes over his face. Then certainty. Then want.
He steps closer. Slowly. Giving me space to change my mind.
I don't.
Instead, I close the distance. Reach for him. Let my fingers curl into the front of his shirt.
"Jonas?"
"Yeah?"
"I want to stay."
He exhales. Shaky. Unsteady. Then leans down. Presses his forehead to mine.
"Okay."
We don't rush. That's the first thing I notice. With Lachlan, there was urgency. Not desperate. Just inevitability. With Finn, there was playfulness. Laughter. Joy.
But with Jonas, it's different. Slower. Quieter. Deeper.
He leads me to the bed. Sits down. Pulls me gently onto his lap. I settle there. Straddling him. My hands resting on his shoulders. He looks up at me. Eyes soft. Searching.
"You're sure?"
"I'm sure."
He nods. Then reaches up. Cups my face in both hands. And kisses me. The kiss starts soft. Tender. Exploratory, like he's learning me. Memorizing me. His lips move against mine slowly. Deliberately, like he has all the time in the world. And maybe he does, because I'm not going anywhere.
My hands slide from his shoulders to his neck.
Then into his hair. He makes a quiet sound.
Low in his throat. Not loud—just there. His hands drop from my face to my waist. Fingers pressing gently into my sides.
Holding me. Grounding me. The kiss deepens.
Slowly. Naturally. His tongue brushes against mine.
Soft. Careful. And I melt into him. I breathe him in—coastal fog and rain on the sand, cool and clean, with something warmer beneath it.
Something that's just him. Time blurs. I don't know how long we sit there.
Kissing. Touching. Breathing each other in.
But it's not enough. I pull back slightly. Just enough to look at him. His eyes are dark. Pupils blown wide. Lips slightly swollen.
"Kaia…"
"I want more," I say quietly.
He searches my face, like he's reading something I haven't said yet, then nods.
"Okay."
He tightens his hands around my waist. Gently. Lifts me just enough to stand.
Then he stands, too. Reaches for the hem of my new sweater. Pauses.
"Can I?" I nod.
He lifts it slowly. Carefully, like he's unwrapping something precious. The fabric slides over my head, and then I'm standing there in just my bra and jeans. Exposed. Vulnerable. But not afraid.
Jonas's gaze moves over me. Slowly. Deliberately. Not hungry. Not possessive. Just appreciative, like he's studying art.
"You're beautiful," he says softly.
My cheeks flush. "Jonas…"
"I mean it." He steps closer. Reaches out. Traces one finger along my collarbone. Slow. Gentle. Reverent. "Every part of you."
My breath hitches. "Your turn," I whisper.
He smiles. Small. Warm. Then reaches for his own sweater. Pulls it over his head. Drops it to the floor. And I stare. Not because he's perfect. Though he is. But because he's letting me see him. Really see him.
I reach out. Slowly. Let my fingers trace the lines of his chest. His stomach. The faint scars I hadn't noticed before. He watches me. Quiet. Still. Letting me explore.
"What happened here?" I ask softly, tracing a thin, jagged scar that cuts diagonally across his ribs—like lightning frozen beneath his skin.
"Old injury," he says. "Years ago."
"Does it still hurt?"
"Sometimes."
I bend down. Press a kiss to it. Soft. Gentle.
He exhales shakily. "Kaia…"
"I want to know all of you," I whisper against his skin. "Every part."
His hands come up. Cup my face. Tilt it up toward his. "You already do."
We move to the bed. Slowly. Together. He lays me down gently, like I'm something irreplaceable, something he can't afford to lose.
Then he settles beside me. Props himself up on one elbow and looks down at me.
"Tell me what you want," he says softly.
I swallow. "I don't know."
"Yes, you do."
I blink. Surprised. "How…"
"Because I know you," he says simply. "And I can see it in your eyes."
Everything in me stills. "What do you see?"
"That you want this," he says. "But you're afraid to ask for it."
Tears prick at my eyes. Sudden. Unexpected.
"I don't know how to ask," I admit.
"You don't have to," he says gently. His hand moves to my waist. Fingers tracing the waistband of my jeans. "Can I?"
I nod.
He unbuttons them slowly. Slides the zipper down. Then hooks his fingers into the fabric. And pauses. Waiting.
I lift my hips. Just slightly. Permission. He slides the jeans down. Carefully. Deliberately. Until I'm lying there in just my underwear. Exposed. Vulnerable. Seen.
Jonas's gaze moves over me again. Slower this time. More intentional.
"You're perfect," he whispers.
"I'm not…"
"You are," he says firmly. "To me, you are."
Something breaks open inside me. "Jonas…"
"I see you, Kaia," he says softly. "All of you. And I'm not going anywhere."
A tear slips down my cheek. He catches it with his thumb. Brings his hand to his mouth and licks the tear away slowly, deliberately—like he's claiming every part of me, even this. Then he leans down and kisses me. Soft. Tender. Perfect.
His hands move lower. Slowly. Deliberately. Tracing the line of my hip. The curve of my thigh. Then higher.
I gasp when his thumb brushes the curve of my breast.
He pauses. Looks at me. "Okay?"
I nod. "Yes."
"Tell me if you want me to stop."
"I won't…want to stop."
He smiles. Small. Warm. Then his fingers move again.
He touches me like he's reading braille.
Learning me. Memorizing every response. Every hitch of breath.
Every quiet sound. Every shift of my body.
And he adjusts, without me saying a word.
Slower here. Firmer there. Gentler when I tense.
More when I arch into him. It's overwhelming—not because of what he's doing, but because he knows. He knows what I need before I do.
"Jonas…"
"I've got you," he whispers. And I believe him.
Because he does. He has me. Completely. The pressure builds.
Slow. Steady. Inevitable. Not rushed. Not frantic.
Just there. Building. Rising. Consuming.
My hands fist in the sheets. My breath comes faster.
My body tenses. And he doesn't stop. Doesn't change.
Doesn't push. Just stays. Steady. Certain. There.
"Let go," he whispers against my ear. And I do. My orgasm crashes over me. Sudden. Overwhelming. Perfect. My back arches. My breath catches. My vision blurs. And through it all, he's there. Holding me. Grounding me. Keeping me safe.
When I come back to myself, he's watching me. Eyes soft. Expression tender.
"You okay?" he asks quietly.
I nod, breathless. "Yeah."
"Good." He leans down. Kisses me softly. Then pulls back. Just enough to look at me. "Do you want to stop?"
I shake my head. "No."
"Are you sure?"
"I want you," I whisper. "All of you."
His breath hitches. Just slightly.
"Okay."
He stands. Slowly. Reaches for his jeans. Unbuttons them. Slides them down. And then he's standing there, in just his boxers. Vulnerable. Open. Mine.
I sit up. Reach for him. He steps closer. Lets me touch him. My hands trace the lines of his hips. The waistband of his boxers. Then lower. He makes a quiet sound. Low. Rough. "Kaia…"
"Can I?" I ask softly.
He nods. "Yeah."
I slide the cotton down. Slowly. Carefully. And then he's bare. Completely. I look up at him. Meet his eyes.
"You're beautiful," I whisper.
He huffs out a quiet laugh. "That's my line."
"I mean it."
He reaches down. Cups my face. "So do I." He climbs onto the bed. Settles over me. Careful. Deliberate. Not crowding. Not overwhelming. Just here.
"Tell me if it's too much," he says softly.
"I will."
He nods. Then reaches between us. Positions himself. Pauses.
"Ready?"
"Yes."
He pushes in slowly. So slowly. Giving me time to adjust. To breathe. To feel. And I feel everything. The stretch. The fullness. The way my body opens for him. The way he fits. Perfectly, like we were made for this. He stills. Buried deep. Breathing hard.
"Okay?" he asks, his voice shaking.
"Yeah," I breathe. "More than okay."
He smiles. Small. Warm. Then starts to move.
It's different than with Lachlan. It’s different from Finn—less playful, more deliberate. Not better. Not worse. Just different. Slower. Deeper. More intentional, like he's savoring every second. Every movement. Every breath.
And I let him. My hands slide up his back. Feeling the shift of muscle. The warmth of his skin. His forehead drops to mine. Breathing ragged. "You feel…" He stops. Exhales. "Perfect," he finishes. "You feel perfect."
"So do you."
The rhythm builds. Slowly. Steadily. Not rushed.
Not frantic. Just right. My body responds.
Instinctively. Naturally. Meeting him. Matching him.
Moving with him. And he reads every shift.
Every change. Every response. Adjusts without me asking.
Deeper when I arch. Slower when I tense.
Harder when I pull him closer. It's overwhelming.
Not because of the sensation. Though that's…
there are no words to describe. But because he knows me. Completely.
"Jonas…"
"I know," he breathes. "I've got you." And he does.
His hand slides between us. Finds the place where we're joined.
Touches me. Gentle. Deliberate. Perfect.
And I shatter. It's different this time.
Deeper. Longer. More intense. Like it's pulling me apart and putting me back together, all at once.
I cry out. Quiet. Breathless. And he follows.
His body tensing. His breath catching. His hands gripping my hips.
Holding me. Grounding me. Keeping me safe.
When it's over, we don't move. Just lie here. Tangled together. Breathing hard. His weight is warm against me. Solid. Real. I don't want him to move. And he doesn't. Not right away.
When the clouds shift and moonlight pours into the room through the open window, he moves. Carefully. Gently. Pulls out slowly. Then settles beside me. Pulls me into his chest. Wraps his arms around me and just holds me.
"You okay?" he asks softly.
I nod into his chest. "Yeah."
"Good." He presses a kiss to the top of my head.
"That was…" I stop. Not sure how to finish.
"I know," he says quietly. And I believe him.
Because he does know. He always does. We lie in silence for a while.
Just breathing. Just being. The window is open, and the distant sound of waves crashes rhythmically against the shore—a steady, soothing pulse that matches our slowing heartbeats.
The ocean breeze drifts through the room, carrying the salt air and the faint scent of night-blooming flowers.
His fingers trace patterns on my back. Slow.
Soothing. Grounding. The soft hum of the air conditioning mingles with the sound of the waves, creating a cocoon of sound around us—intimate and safe.
"Jonas?" I whisper.
"Yeah?"
"Thank you."
"For what?"
"For seeing me."
His arms tighten around me. Just slightly. "Always," he says softly. "I'll always see you."
My entire being lights up. Completely, irreversibly his.
"I love you," I whisper.
He goes still. Just for a second. Then exhales unsteadily.
"I love you too."
And lying there in his arms, in his bed, in his space, I realize something. This isn't just about being safe. Or being wanted. Or being chosen. This is about being known. Completely. Utterly. Perfectly.
And for the first time in my life, I realize I don't have to hide. I don't have to pretend. I don't have to be anything other than exactly who I am. Because he sees me. All of me.
