Chapter 25
CHAPTER 25
H annah tapped the steering wheel of her car as she parked in Rachel’s driveway, still buzzing with the excitement of the previous night. She grabbed her purse and stepped out, glancing toward the house just as Rachel opened the front door.
“There you are!” Rachel called with a smile. “Come on in. Everly’s next door with Carolyn. She’s obsessed with her new puppy.”
“Perfect timing,” Hannah replied, walking up the steps. “I have so much to tell you.”
As soon as they stepped into the living room, Rachel gestured toward the kitchen. “Coffee? Tea? Wine?”
“Wine, if you’ve got it,” Hannah said with a laugh, sitting down on the couch and kicking off her sandals.
“I own a vineyard, Hannah. Of course I have wine,” Rachel teased as she poured them each a glass of white wine and sat down next to her. “Okay, spill. How was the date? I can’t believe you waited until late afternoon to come over. I thought for sure you’d be up at the crack of daylight, knocking on my door. It must have been wonderful because you’re practically glowing.”
Hannah couldn’t help but grin as she launched into the story, detailing every moment of the night before—the vintage Volkswagen bus, the music at Herring Cove, the walk on the beach, and the kiss on the cheek that had left her floating. Rachel listened intently, her smile growing with every word.
“He sounds very sweet,” Rachel said when Hannah finally paused to take a sip of her wine. “You deserve this, Han. I’m so happy for you.”
“Thanks,” Hannah said softly. “I think this might actually go somewhere, you know?”
Before Rachel could respond, the front door opened, and Lucy’s voice called out, “It’s me!”
“In here!” Rachel called back. Lucy appeared in the doorway, her camera bag slung over one shoulder and a mischievous glint in her eye.
“Don’t mind me,” Lucy said, dropping her bag on the floor and flopping into an armchair. “I’m just here to hear all about Hannah’s hot date.”
Hannah groaned, throwing a pillow at her sister. “Not you too!”
“Oh, absolutely me,” Lucy teased, catching the pillow and tossing it back. “So, was there a kiss?”
“Just on the cheek,” Hannah admitted, her cheeks flushing. “But it was nice. Really nice.”
Lucy clapped her hands together. “I knew it! Sam sounds like a keeper.”
They spent the next half hour chatting, the conversation flowing easily between them. Rachel leaned back on the couch, a content smile on her face. “This is nice. We don’t do this enough.”
“I agree,” Lucy said. “We need to take turns hosting a weekly dinner. I’ll go last,” she teased.
“Why does that not surprise me?” Rachel added.
Just as they were finishing their second glass of wine, Rachel’s phone buzzed on the coffee table. She picked it up and glanced at the screen. “It’s Jack. One second.”
She answered, her expression shifting to one of mild concern. “What’s up?…Uh-huh. Okay, sure. I’ll head over now.”
She hung up and then grabbed her car keys. “Jack says there’s something going on with the grape plants and he needs me to take a look.”
Lucy perked up. “Oh! This might be a good time for me to grab those photos I mentioned. If you don’t mind, I’ll tag along.”
“Not at all,” Rachel said. “Let’s go.”
Hannah stood as well, already heading for the door. “I’ll grab Everly and hang out with her while you’re gone. Take your time.”
Rachel gave her a grateful smile. “Thanks, Han.”
As soon as Rachel and Lucy were out the door, Hannah wasted no time. She jogged next door to Carolyn’s house, where Everly was sitting on the floor, giggling as the tiny puppy tried to climb onto her lap.
“Hey, kiddo,” Hannah said, crouching down. “You ready to play dress-up?”
Everly’s eyes lit up. “Princess dress?”
“That’s right,” Hannah said, holding out her hand. “Let’s go get you ready.”
Within minutes, Everly was dressed in her beloved pink gown, her curls neatly brushed and a small tiara perched on her head. Hannah buckled her into the car seat, glancing at the clock. “Right on schedule,” she muttered, starting the engine.
Hannah explained to Everly that she had a secret for Rachel.
“We have a secret,” Everly whispered, her finger near her lips.
“That’s right, we’re going to surprise her,” Hannah whispered, as Everly’s face lit up at the thought there was something exciting about to happen.
They pulled into the vineyard from the back gate just as the sun began to dip lower in the sky, casting everything in a warm golden glow. Hannah parked near the edge of the property and turned to Everly. “Okay, sweetheart, we’re going to make tonight really special for your mom, okay?”
Everly nodded solemnly, clutching her teddy bear tightly. “Special for Mommy.”
Hannah smiled, her heart swelling. “That’s right. Let’s go.”
She took Everly’s hand and led her toward the vines, her excitement building as she imagined how perfect the evening would be. Everything was falling into place.
Jack stood outside the main vineyard building, the last rays of sunlight casting a warm glow over the rows of vines. The caterer’s truck had just pulled away, leaving behind the carefully prepared appetizers and chilled champagne hidden safely in the building. One of the caterers had stayed behind, tucked away in Jack’s office, ready to manage the final touches after the proposal.
He ended his call to Rachel and slipped the phone back into his pocket, exhaling deeply. His hand instinctively moved to the small velvet box in his pocket. Pulling it out, he stared at the ring for a moment, the diamond catching the fading light. It was simple but elegant, just like Rachel. His thumb brushed over the box’s soft surface before he tucked it back into his pocket.
“This is it,” he murmured to himself, willing his nerves to calm. “Don’t mess it up.”
A few minutes later, Rachel’s car pulled into the gravel lot, with Lucy in the passenger seat. Jack straightened, wiping his palms on his jeans as they stepped out.
“Hey,” Rachel called, walking toward him. “What’s going on with the plants?”
“Let me show you,” Jack said, forcing a steady smile. “Lucy, feel free to set up wherever you want for your photos.”
Lucy lifted her camera bag with a grin. “Thanks, Jack. I’ll head to the middle of the vineyard if that’s okay.”
“Sure, whatever you need,” Jack said, his focus shifting to Rachel. “Let’s head this way.”
Rachel nodded, her brow furrowed slightly as she followed Jack toward the vines. “What exactly did you notice?”
Jack gestured vaguely toward a row of plants. “Some of the leaves look off. Could just be a weather thing, but I wanted your take.”
Rachel leaned in to inspect the vines, her focus entirely on the plants. Jack glanced over his shoulder, his heart racing as he saw Lucy setting up her camera a few rows away. Everything was falling into place.
At the far end of the vineyard, Hannah parked her car discreetly and turned to Everly, who was bouncing excitedly in her car seat.
“Okay, sweetheart,” Hannah said, crouching down to Everly’s level after unbuckling her. “We’re going to see your mommy, and there’s going to be a big surprise. Remember how we talked about secrets?”
Everly nodded solemnly, clutching her teddy bear tightly. “Secret!” she whispered.
“That’s right,” Hannah said, adjusting the tiara perched on Everly’s curls. “When I say it’s time, you’ll run to mommy, okay?”
Everly’s eyes lit up. “Okay!”
Hannah took her hand and led her carefully toward the edge of the vineyard, stopping just short of where Rachel and Jack were standing. They crouched behind a row of vines, waiting for Lucy’s signal.
Jack guided Rachel further into the vineyard, keeping his voice calm despite the storm of nerves building inside him. “Maybe I’m imagining it,” he said, glancing at her as she studied the plants.
Rachel straightened, brushing her hands on her jeans. “They look fine to me. Are you sure?—”
Her words faltered as Jack turned to face her, his expression suddenly serious. Her confusion deepened when he reached into his pocket and pulled out the velvet box.
“Jack,” she said softly, her voice catching. “What’s going on?”
Jack took a deep breath, dropping to one knee. “Rachel, you and Everly have become my world. I can’t imagine a future without you in it. You’ve brought so much light into my life, and I want to spend the rest of my days making you as happy as you’ve made me.” He opened the box, revealing the ring. “Will you marry me?”
Rachel’s hands flew to her mouth, her eyes welling with tears. For a moment, she was too overwhelmed to speak. Then she nodded, her voice trembling. “Yes. Yes, Jack.”
At that exact moment, Lucy, standing a few rows away, captured the moment with her camera. She quickly waved to Hannah.
Hannah gave Everly a gentle nudge. “Go to mommy, sweetheart.”
Everly darted out from the vines, her pink dress billowing as she ran. “Mommy!” she squealed.
Rachel knelt down, catching her daughter in her arms. “Oh, my sweet girl.”
Jack stood, slipping the ring onto Rachel’s finger before wrapping his arms around both of them. Lucy continued snapping photos, the golden light of the sunset framing the perfect moment.
Hannah stayed back, a warm smile on her face as she watched the little family. The plan had gone off without a hitch, and the love radiating from Rachel and Jack made every second of preparation worth it.
With tears in her eyes, Hannah ran up to join Lucy, who was also crying.
“We did it,” Hannah announced.
Lucy was laughing through the tears. “We certainly did.”
Suddenly, warm lights flickered to life throughout the vineyard. Rachel gasped as she looked up to see strings of twinkling bulbs crisscrossing between the rows of vines, transforming the twilight into a magical wonderland. Jack had arranged them earlier that day, and now they cast a soft, golden glow over everything.
"There's more," Jack said softly, taking her hand. He led them toward the main building, Everly skipping ahead in her princess dress.
As they rounded the corner, Rachel's hand tightened in his. A small table had been set with champagne and her favorite appetizers from The Coastal Table. Mason jars filled with fairy lights dotted the space, and flower petals were scattered across the white tablecloth.
"When did you…" Rachel started, then laughed, shaking her head. "Hannah and Lucy. Of course."
"Guilty," Hannah called out, coming up behind them with Lucy. Both sisters were beaming.
"We couldn't let this moment pass without a proper celebration," Lucy added, still snapping photos.
Jack poured champagne for the adults, and Everly bounced excitedly when she saw her own special glass filled with apple juice. "Toast!" Everly yelled, not quite understanding what it meant but clearly having rehearsed her part ahead of the celebrations.
They all raised their glasses, but before anyone could speak, Everly continued in her clear little voice: "Me and Mommy and Jack!" Then she looked at Hannah uncertainly, who nodded encouragement.
"And to love!” Hannah added.
"To love," they all echoed, laughing as Everly clinked her glass enthusiastically against everyone else's.
As they settled around the table, sharing food and stories, Rachel couldn't stop looking at her ring, the diamond catching the light of the mason jars. Every few minutes, she'd find herself reaching for Jack's hand or pulling Everly closer, as if making sure this wasn't all a dream.
"I can't believe you all kept this secret," she said, shaking her head at her sisters. "Especially you, Miss Can't-Keep-A-Secret," she added, pointing at Hannah with her champagne glass.
Hannah pressed a hand to her chest in mock offense. "I have no idea what you mean.'"
"I’m sure you do!" Lucy protested, making them all laugh.
As the sky darkened to deep blue, the lights in the vineyard seemed to glow brighter. The air was filled with the sound of laughter, the clink of glasses, and Everly's excited chatter about being a flower girl. Jack watched his new fiancée—the word made his heart skip—as she threw her head back laughing at something Hannah said, her face glowing with joy.
Rachel caught him looking and leaned over to kiss him softly. "Thank you," she whispered against his lips. "This is perfect."
"Thank you for saying yes," he whispered back, then grinned. "Though Everly might have never forgiven me if you hadn't."
"Speaking of forgiveness," Rachel said, raising her voice slightly, "when exactly did my daughter learn to keep such a big secret?"
"Mommy!" Everly said importantly, straightening in her chair. "Hannah said it was a special secret! And I didn't tell!"
They all laughed, and Hannah reached over to high-five her niece. "You did amazing, sweetie. Best secret-keeper ever."
As the evening wore on, more stories emerged—how Jack had asked Hannah and Lucy for their blessing a few days earlier, how they'd all collaborated to plan this perfect moment, how Everly had practiced her part with Hannah in the car. With each revelation, Rachel's eyes grew mistier, though her smile never dimmed.
The vineyard around them seemed to share in their joy with a gentle breeze and the sound of crickets beginning their evening song. Under the twinkling lights, surrounded by the people she loved most in the world, Rachel couldn't imagine a more perfect beginning to their next chapter.
As the celebration continued, Everly began to droop in her chair, her princess dress slightly wrinkled and her tiara slightly askew. She fought to keep her eyes open, determined not to miss a single moment of the celebration.
"I think someone's ready for bed," Hannah said softly, watching her niece's head bob forward.
"No," Everly protested weakly, even as she crawled into Jack's lap.
Rachel smiled, running her fingers through her daughter's curls. "What do you think, baby? Should we head home?"
"No, tell the story," Everly mumbled, snuggling closer to Jack.
Lucy lowered her camera, finally setting it aside after capturing countless moments throughout the evening. "Which story, sweetie?"
"Mommy and Jack story," Everly said, as if it were obvious.
Rachel exchanged a look with Jack, both of them fighting back tears. "Well," she began, her voice thick with emotion, "once upon a time, there was a mommy and her little girl who lived near a beautiful vineyard…"
"And then Jack came," Everly continued sleepily.
"That's right," Jack whispered, pressing a kiss to the top of her head. "And now we're going to be a family forever."
Hannah and Lucy sat close together, watching the scene unfold. Lucy reached for her sister's hand, squeezing it tight. They'd seen Rachel through so much—the good times and the hard ones—and now, watching her find this happiness, their hearts felt full to bursting.
Under the canopy of twinkling lights, with the vineyard stretching out around them and the stars beginning to peek through the darkening sky, they were more than just witnesses to a proposal. They were a family, growing and changing and loving, writing their own story one perfect moment at a time.
Everly finally drifted off to sleep in Jack's arms, still wearing her princess dress, the tiara now in Lucy’s backpack. And as Rachel looked around at the people she loved most in the world – her sisters, her daughter, her fiancé – she knew that sometimes the best endings were really just beautiful beginnings in disguise.
