Chapter 22 Cade
TWENTY-TWO
CADE
The ancient Moonfire energy responded to their reconnection like a living entity awakening from slumber, recognizing their unity after the fear-based visions had nearly severed their mate bond entirely.
Golden light erupted around them, not harsh or blinding, but warm and encompassing—wrapping them in luminous threads that pulsed in rhythm with their heartbeats. Cade pulled Mila closer against his chest. But the energy didn’t feel threatening; it felt like coming home.
Two souls, one destiny.
The whispered words seemed to echo from the crystalline walls themselves, spoken by voices that belonged to neither past nor present but something eternal. Cade’s breath caught as the golden light intensified, and suddenly they weren’t alone in the cave anymore.
Two spirits materialized before them—translucent but undeniably real.
A woman with Mila’s golden hair and determined blue eyes stood beside a tall, broad-shouldered man whose green eyes and commanding presence marked him unmistakably as Cade’s ancestor.
The woman wore simple but elegant robes, while the man bore the royal markings of an Ice Moon king.
“Celeste Aylward,” Mila whispered, and somehow Cade knew she was right.
They showed Cade and Mila another vision of a time centuries past—Celeste working alongside the widowed wolf king, building bridges between human settlements and shifter territories.
Not as mates, but as partners united by a shared vision of peace.
Her compassion tempering his strength, his protection enabling her courage.
She came from Earth, just like you, Cade realized, awe flooding through him. She chose to leave everything behind to build something greater.
The ancestral vision shifted, showing them the alliance Celeste and his ancestor had forged—humans and shifters working together, trading knowledge and protection, creating a harmony that had been lost when the worlds separated during the great migration.
As the vision faded, Cade understood with total clarity why the universe had brought them together. His lineage and Mila’s weren’t just compatible—they were destined to restore what had been broken centuries ago.
“You were always meant to stand beside me,” Cade said, his voice filled with wonder. The golden light still swirled around them, making her hair shimmer like spun sunlight. “Not just as my mate, but as my equal. So we could lead this world together and restore the human-shifter alliance.”
Mila’s eyes filled with tears, but her smile was radiant. “I can feel it so strongly now—the connection to this place, to you, to our shared purpose. My soul finally remembers.”
The Moonfire energy pulsed one final time, leaving faint luminescent marks where their hands were joined—proof of a bond sanctioned by forces older than time itself. Cade felt another mark settle warm against his chest, right over his heart, while Mila’s mate mark glowed softly at her throat.
My wolf has finally settled, he realized with profound relief. The restless energy that had driven him for thirty years was finally at peace, recognizing that he’d found not just his mate, but his purpose.
When the golden light faded, they stood together in the quiet dim cave, forever changed.
“Ready to face the world?” Cade asked, though he wasn’t sure he wanted to leave this sacred space just yet.
“With you? I’m ready for anything.”
The boulder at the cave entrance rolled away with a grinding rumble, revealing anxious faces illuminated by the twin suns’ afternoon light. Lyra rushed forward first, followed by Martin and the council elders, all of them searching for signs of success or failure.
Elder Grimm’s eyes widened as he took in the luminescent marks on their skin. “The ancient magic has blessed your union,” he said with reverence. “The trial has confirmed what we hoped—your bond is true and sanctioned by powers beyond our understanding.”
“Does this mean—“ Mila began.
“It means,” Elder Grimm interrupted with a rare smile, “that the council gives its blessing for King Cade to propose marriage and for you to become his queen. The Moonfire Trial has spoken.”
Cade felt a rush of relief so intensely it nearly brought him to his knees. They’d survived. More than that—they’d been transformed by the experience, their connection deepened beyond what he’d thought possible.
Cade turned to Martin and Lyra, who stood watching them with knowing smiles. “Take a ride back with Elder Grimm. I’m taking Mila to the family cabin.”
Martin’s eyebrows rose slightly, but his grin was unmistakable. “Celebrating your trial success, I assume?”
“Something like that.” Cade’s voice carried an edge of possessive satisfaction that made his wolf rumble with approval. The ancient magic had changed something between him and Mila, and he needed to explore that away from prying eyes and pack politics.
Lyra practically bounced on her toes. “The cabin’s perfect for—“
“Lyra,” Cade warned, though warmth colored his tone.
“—relaxing after such an intense trial,” she finished innocently. “Have fun, brother. You’ve earned it.”
Elder Grimm nodded approvingly. “The ancient magic needs time to settle. Solitude will serve you both well.”
Cade guided Mila toward the royal car, his hand possessive at the small of her back. The luminescent marks from the trial still glowed faintly on their skin, a visible reminder of what they’d just experienced together.
As he started the engine and pulled away from the sacred cave, the silence between them felt electric. Mila’s scent had changed somehow—still uniquely hers but now carrying an undertone that called more intensely to his wolf.
Everything’s different now, he realized. The weight that had pressed down on him so heavily for months—his father’s expectations and failing health, the council’s doubt, his own fear of failing as a leader—had lifted completely. What remained was a pure and focused sense of purpose.
“You’re thinking very loudly over there,” Mila said softly, her eyes fixed on the passing purple forest.
“The trial changed everything for me,” he admitted with complete honesty. “I can feel you differently now. It’s like every barrier between us dissolved completely.”
She turned to study his profile. “Yes, I feel that too. It’s pretty overwhelming.”
The admission made his hands tighten on the steering wheel. When they’d entered that cave, he’d needed a mate to secure his position and wanted her to be his queen. Now, he understood their union was something far more profound and eternal—a restoration of an ancient alliance.
Gerri knew, he thought with grudging admiration. That meddling woman orchestrated everything perfectly. She’d recognized what he’d been too blind to see. Mila wasn’t just his fated mate, she was the key to healing a rift that had existed for centuries.
The cabin appeared through the trees—a rustic structure built by his grandfather decades ago, designed for royal family retreats far from castle formalities. Cade parked and immediately circled to Mila’s door.
“I can walk—“ she began.
“Not tonight.” His eyes blazed with alpha intensity as he lifted her effortlessly into his arms. “Tonight, I’m going to show you exactly what it means to be my future queen.”
Mila’s breath caught at the raw possession in his voice. “Cade—“
“What? The trial proved we belong together.” He carried her up the cabin steps, his wolf surging with primal satisfaction. “Now I intend to celebrate that properly.”
The cabin door swung open under his shoulder, revealing the warm and cozy interior. Cade set Mila down slowly, his hands lingering at her waist as she steadied herself against his chest.
“We have all night to ourselves,” he murmured, his mouth brushing her ear. “And I plan to use every minute of it.”
Cade couldn’t wait a minute longer after he started the fire in the stone fireplace of the cabin.
And apparently, neither could she. The deepened bond from the Moonfire Trial had amplified every sensation, every emotion between them, and the connection was too potent to ignore.
Mila’s pulse raced, her scent sharp with desire, and it made his wolf claw at the surface, demanding he claim her completely.
They stood inches apart, the firelight casting flickering shadows on the cabin walls. Cade’s eyes darkened with raw need as he reached for her, his hands trembling as he gripped the hem of her shirt.
“Clothes are a problem,” he growled, his voice thick with hunger.
Mila laughed breathlessly, her hands already tugging at his shirt. “I agree. You’re wearing too many layers.”
He didn’t argue. In one swift motion, he yanked the shirt over her head, tossing it aside. Her bra followed, leaving her bare from the waist up. Cade’s breath hitched at the sight of her, her skin glowing in the firelight, her chest rising and falling with anticipation.
“You’re so breathtaking,” he whispered.
She smirked, her fingers working furiously on his belt. “Less talking, more undressing.”
Cade’s lips curved into a wolfish grin. “Your wish is my command, my queen.”
He removed his shirt in one swift motion and kicked off his boots. Mila’s hands slid down his chest, her touch electric, and he growled low in his throat. Before he knew it, they were both completely bare in front of the fireplace, his arousal throbbing desperately for her.
Their mouths crashed together, a collision of heat and need. Cade backed her against the nearest wall, his hands roaming her body. She moaned into his mouth, her hands gripping his shoulders.
“Bed,” she gasped between kisses.
“Bed’s too far,” he growled, his hands sliding down to grip her hips.
He lifted her up, pressing her against the wall, her legs wrapping around his waist. She was already wet, her warmth pressing against him, and his arousal throbbed harder with urgency.
“I need you. Now.”
Mila’s breath hitched as she nodded, her eyes dark with longing.
He entered her in one fluid thrust, her cry of pleasure echoing through the cabin. Cade’s head fell back, a deep groan tearing from his throat as she clenched around him, her heat enveloping him completely.
“Damn, Mila,” he growled. “You’re absolutely perfect.”
She clung to him, her breath ragged against his neck. “Don’t stop,” she pleaded, her hips rocking against his.
Cade obeyed, thrusting into her with a rhythm that was both claiming and reverent.
Every movement sent sparks of pleasure through their deepened bond, their emotions and sensations intertwined in a way that was overwhelming and exhilarating.
Mila’s moans grew louder, her body tightening around him, and Cade knew she was close.
“Come for me, beautiful,” he commanded, his voice low and guttural.
She shattered almost instantly, her body convulsing around him, her cry of ecstasy muffled against his shoulder.
Cade followed her over the edge, his orgasm crashing through him with such intensity that he nearly blacked out.
He pressed his forehead against hers, his body trembling with the force of it.
“That was…” Mila trailed off, her voice shaky.
“Just the first round,” Cade promised, his lips brushing hers softly.
He carried her to the dining table next, her laughter ringing through the cabin as he set her down. “Cade, the table?” she teased, her eyes sparkling with amusement.
“Every surface will be touched tonight,” he growled, his hands already roaming her body again.
She grinned, pulling him closer. “Good.”
Their passion was relentless, a whirlwind of want and love that left no surface untouched.
The kitchen counter, the bed, the bathtub—each location a new chapter in their night of unbridled desire.
Cade’s wolf reveled in the primal connection, their bond stronger than ever, and Mila met him with equal fervor, her laughter and moans music to his ears.
Hours later, they collapsed on the fur rug by the fire, their bodies intertwined. Cade traced lazy circles on her skin, his heart full in a way he’d never experienced.
As they settled deeper into each other’s arms and she started drifting off to sleep, his wolf hummed with contentment.
This was joy, happiness, and pleasure all wrapped into one—a promise of their beautiful future together.
Cade closed his eyes, savoring the moment, knowing this was only the beginning.
