Chapter 16 Aftermath #2
Kai organized physical copies while Elliot created a clear digital timeline. They identified missing information and noted which questions still needed answers.
When they finished, Kai looked at the neatly arranged folders.
“That actually helps.”
“Good.”
“Thank you.”
Elliot nodded.
“You’re welcome.”
The words were simple.
But the moment mattered.
Kai wasn’t thanking him for saving anything.
He was thanking him for helping.
There was a difference.
Later that evening, Kai insisted on making dinner.
Elliot watched him move around the small kitchen area at the back of the studio.
“You cook?”
Kai looked over his shoulder.
“Occasionally.”
“That’s surprising.”
“Why?”
“You seem like someone who survives on coffee.”
Kai gave him a look.
“I can cook.”
“I believe you.”
“You don’t sound convinced.”
“I’ve seen your drawing skills.”
Kai laughed.
“That’s completely unrelated.”
Elliot smiled.
The tension between them was different now.
Still present.
But no longer sharp enough to hurt.
They ate together at the small table near the back of the studio.
The food was simple.
Kai apologized for it.
Elliot told him it was good.
Kai accused him of being polite.
Elliot laughed.
“I actually mean it.”
“Then you’re finally learning honesty.”
The joke landed gently.
Elliot looked at him.
“I deserve that.”
Kai’s smile faded slightly.
“I didn’t mean it like that.”
“I know.”
They continued eating.
Afterward, Elliot helped clean up.
Their hands brushed when they reached for the same plate.
Both stopped.
Kai looked at him.
Elliot didn’t move away.
Neither did Kai.
The moment lasted only a few seconds.
Then Kai stepped back.
“Sorry.”
“Don’t be.”
Kai nodded.
They returned to cleaning.
It was a small moment.
But Elliot understood its significance.
Before, they would have followed attraction wherever it led.
Now they were learning to pause.
To ask.
To wait.
That night, they sat together on the studio couch.
Kai’s shoulder rested against Elliot’s.
Neither spoke for a while.
Then Kai shifted closer.
Elliot looked at him.
“Okay?”
Kai nodded.
“Yes.”
Elliot reached for his hand.
Their fingers intertwined.
The gesture felt more intimate than any kiss they had shared before.
There was no urgency.
No fear that a train would arrive.
No need to steal minutes before a station.
They had time.
Kai looked down at their hands.
“I still don’t know what we’re doing.”
“Neither do I.”
“That’s uncomfortable.”
“It is.”
Kai smiled faintly.
“But maybe that’s okay.”
Elliot looked at him.
“I think it is.”
Kai turned toward him.
Their faces slowly moved closer.
He stopped before their lips touched.
“Can I?”
Elliot nodded.
“Yes.”
The kiss was gentle.
There was no claiming.
No urgency.
Just recognition.
They pulled apart.
Kai searched his face.
“Still okay?”
“Yes.”
They kissed again.
The closeness gradually deepened, but neither hurried. Each touch came with the quiet understanding that either of them could stop.
For Elliot, the difference was enormous.
Their first intimate moments had been wrapped in secrecy.
The metro had given them a place to escape.
The studio had become another hidden world.
Tonight there was nowhere to escape to.
There was simply choice.
Kai touched Elliot’s cheek.
Elliot leaned into his hand.
They stayed close for a long time, letting affection return at its own pace.
Eventually, the physical distance between them disappeared again, but this time there was no desperation behind it.
They were not trying to forget the past.
They were not using desire to avoid difficult conversations.
They were choosing each other carefully.
When they finally settled back together, the studio was quiet.
Kai rested against Elliot.
Elliot held him gently.
Neither spoke for several minutes.
Then Kai said, “I’m still scared.”
Elliot looked down at him.
“Of me?”
“Of this.”
Kai’s fingers moved slowly over Elliot’s hand.
“I’m afraid I’ll trust you again and something will happen.”
Elliot understood.
“I can’t promise nothing will ever hurt you.”
Kai looked at him.
“But I can promise that I won’t hide things from you because I’m afraid of what you’ll do with the truth.”
Kai’s eyes softened.
Elliot continued.
“And if you’re afraid, you can tell me.”
Kai nodded.
“What if we’re both scared?”
Elliot smiled faintly.
“Then we’ll be scared honestly.”
Kai stared at him.
A quiet smile appeared.
“That’s a terrible plan.”
“Probably.”
“You’re supposed to have better plans.”
“I’ve learned plans don’t always work.”
Kai laughed softly.
Then he became serious again.
“You really want to try again?”
Elliot didn’t answer immediately.
He looked at Kai.
At the man he had hurt.
At the man who was still willing to sit beside him.
At the relationship they had almost destroyed.
“Yes,” Elliot said.
Kai took a breath.
“So do I.”
Neither called it forgiveness.
Neither called it a fresh start.
They knew better.
The hurt hadn’t disappeared.
The fear hadn’t disappeared.
Trust hadn’t magically returned.
But something had changed.
They were no longer trying to rebuild what they had before.
They were building something different.
Something slower.
Something more honest.
Kai reached for Elliot’s hand.
Elliot held it.
For the first time, neither needed the metro to give them permission to be together.
There was no secret carriage.
No rule about what happened between stations.
No countdown to the doors opening.
There was only the quiet studio, the difficult past, and the possibility of a future they would have to build one choice at a time.
They didn’t know where that future would lead.
But they both knew they wanted to find out.
