Chapter 19 New Lines #2

Kai watched him enter the studio carrying a small bag.

“You're late.”

Elliot looked at his watch.

“Seven minutes.”

“Unacceptable.”

“I'll try harder.”

Kai smiled.

“You brought dinner?”

“I did.”

“You're learning.”

Elliot placed the bag on the counter.

“I thought you were cooking.”

“I changed my mind.”

“You always do that.”

“That's why you like me.”

Elliot laughed.

They ate together.

It had become ordinary.

That was what Kai loved most.

Elliot wasn't just the man from the metro anymore.

He was the person who knew where Kai kept the coffee.

The person who left his glasses on the counter.

The person who complained when Kai left tattoo sketches on the dining table.

The person who knew which songs Kai played when he worked late.

The person who sometimes fell asleep on the couch while waiting for him to finish a client.

He was simply part of Kai's life.

One evening, while they were cleaning up after dinner, Elliot said, “Have you thought about living arrangements?”

Kai looked at him.

“That sounds serious.”

“It is.”

Kai leaned against the counter.

“What are you thinking?”

Elliot hesitated.

“I've been spending most nights here anyway.”

“You have.”

“I have clothes here.”

“You do.”

“My toothbrush is here.”

Kai smiled.

“Very romantic.”

Elliot laughed.

“I'm just saying.”

Kai looked toward the back room.

There was a small unused space that could be converted into a bedroom.

“You could move in.”

Elliot went quiet.

Kai immediately wondered whether he had said too much.

Then Elliot smiled.

“Would you want that?”

“Yes.”

The answer came easily.

Kai took his hand.

“I want you here.”

Elliot squeezed his fingers.

“Then I'll move in.”

Kai smiled.

“Just like that?”

“Not exactly.”

“What are the conditions?”

“I get half the closet.”

“No.”

“Then I reconsider.”

Kai laughed.

“You're impossible.”

“You love me.”

Kai looked at him.

“I do.”

The words still felt powerful.

But they no longer frightened him.

Later that night, they sat together on the studio floor, planning their future.

It wasn't dramatic.

They talked about rent.

Bills.

Work schedules.

Groceries.

Who would cook.

Who would clean.

Whether Elliot would work from the studio sometimes.

How Kai could expand without losing the character of the place.

They disagreed about several things.

They laughed about others.

They discovered that planning a life together was nothing like imagining one.

It was practical.

Messy.

Sometimes boring.

And strangely intimate.

Kai loved it.

At some point, Elliot looked at the notebook.

“You really want to do all this?”

Kai nodded.

“I spent so long trying to keep this place alive.”

He looked around.

“Now I want it to grow.”

Elliot smiled.

“Your father would be proud.”

Kai looked toward the photograph.

“I hope so.”

“You're continuing what he started.”

Kai looked at Elliot.

“No.”

Elliot raised an eyebrow.

Kai smiled.

“I'm building what comes next.”

Elliot nodded.

“I like that better.”

A few days later, they took the metro together.

It wasn't planned.

They simply needed to go across the city for an appointment.

When the train arrived, Kai held the doors while Elliot stepped inside.

They found space near the familiar pole.

Kai looked at it.

Then at Elliot.

“This is where it started.”

Elliot smiled.

“You were standing there.”

“You were staring.”

“I was observing.”

“You were staring.”

“Fine.”

Kai laughed.

The train began moving.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Elliot reached for his hand.

Their fingers intertwined.

No hesitation.

No checking who was watching.

Kai looked down at their hands.

“Remember our rules?”

Elliot smiled.

“No names.”

“No jobs.”

“No family.”

“No outside-life questions.”

“And everything between the doors stayed between us.”

Kai shook his head.

“What idiots we were.”

Elliot laughed.

“We thought we were protecting ourselves.”

“We were hiding.”

“Yes.”

Kai looked at him.

“I'm glad we don't have to anymore.”

“So am I.”

The train slowed at the next station.

Elliot glanced toward the doors.

This was the station where he used to get off.

The place where their earliest conversations had ended.

The station where Kai would watch him leave.

The station that once represented separation.

The announcement sounded.

The doors opened.

Neither man moved.

Kai looked at Elliot.

“Your station.”

“I know.”

“You getting off?”

Elliot smiled.

“No.”

The doors began closing.

The train moved again.

Kai squeezed his hand.

“One more stop?”

Elliot leaned against his shoulder.

“One more.”

They remained there together.

They talked about Elliot's new job.

Kai talked about his plans for the studio.

They discussed visiting his family.

They argued playfully about who would get more closet space.

They laughed.

They held hands.

The old rules were gone.

There was nothing they needed to hide.

When the next station arrived, neither rushed toward the doors.

They stayed.

Not because they were afraid to leave.

Not because the train was the only place where they belonged.

Because they had finally learned that being together did not require an escape.

The metro continued through the city.

Kai looked at Elliot.

“You know what?”

“What?”

“I think I finally understand why I liked the train so much.”

Elliot smiled.

“Why?”

“Because every stop used to feel like another chance to choose you.”

Elliot rested his head against Kai's shoulder.

“And now?”

Kai kissed his hair.

“Now I choose you before the doors even open.”

Elliot smiled.

The train carried them forward.

Past the station where their story had begun.

Past the places that had once represented secrets.

Toward a future neither of them had planned.

But both of them had chosen.

Together.
