Rane
We’re absolutely not spying.
We’re just — standing here. Outside. In the dark. Watching.
“Can you hear what she’s saying?” Trey asks.
“No.”
“Me neither.”
We watch anyway.
Kyron’s got his head down, which means he’s actually talking,
Good, good.
That means whatever I said to him worked.
I am going to enjoy that for a very long time.
Nova’s just — there. Holding his hand while he gets it out.
“I don’t know what she said,” Trey says, “but—”
“It’s exactly what the idiot needed to hear.” I cross my arms. “Whatever it was.”
Trey watches them start walking. Together. Her hand still in his.
“She does that,” Trey says. “Doesn’t she.”
“Yeah.”
“Like she just — knows.”
“It’s not even that,” I say. “It’s just her being her. She sees people.”
“Yeah,” Trey says quietly. “She does.”
We’re quiet for a minute.
Then Kyron stops walking. Nova stops too. She turns to look at him and whatever happens next I can’t fully make out in the dark but then his hands are on her face and —
“Damn,” Trey says.
“Uhhuh,” I confirm. Weakly, while my body reacts before I can stop it.
We watch for probably too long.
I’m not sorry.
Then Nova and Kyron turn and walk toward the house. Together. Not looking back.
Trey watches them go.
“So, are you gonna…” he says.
I’m already moving.
“Fuck yes!”
