Chapter 13 #3
They came to her house, and before she got out, he pulled her in for a luscious kiss. She snuggled her nose to his chin and closed her eyes. “I have to confess something.”
“What’s that?”
“My house is an absolute mess due to my depression. I’m sorry.”
“Don’t be. I don’t judge people.”
She sweetly teased while touching his chest, “Wanna fuck me again inside?”
He was surprised all over again. He withdrew his head and quirked his brows down to her. “I always painted ya to be the sweet, innocent type. You were so not like that last night. Nor this morning. What gives?”
She brushed his arm with a teasing grin. “I can be, but I feel comfortable around you. I feel like I don’t have to be all prim and proper all the time.”
He snickered. “You most certainly don’t!”
Not even a few minutes later, Caleb was on her again holding her down to bed.
She had been like the only drug that ever fixed him, and he was the only therapy she wanted.
After their second coupling, Caleb ordered takeout and showered with her, kissing every part of her body and washing her hair.
He finally got the best back scratch of his life.
They ate, watched movies, made love, cuddled on the couch, on the floor tangled up in the bed sheets.
It had been five times they had made love, but even though Caleb was wearing low on his stamina, neither one of them wanted to be done.
That night while he stayed over, she rode him passionately. It was beautiful to be on top of him, to kiss his nipples, massage his chest, and throw her head back as he taught her exactly how to move her hips that felt so good to him.
The cold night sang with the empty branches swaying in the trees. She was cradled by him, snuggled up. Caleb randomly shot up and freaked out. “Evie, I wasn’t wearing a condom at any time we had sex!”
Without opening her eyes, she reached into her purse on her nightstand and lifted up her birth control pills, shaking them in play with a smile.
He laughed loudly. “Oh, thank God! Are you always on birth control?”
She rolled over. “I got on it the first time we almost had sex. I went straight to the doctor.”
“And you kept taking it even after I blew you off?”
She thought quietly and lovingly looked at him. “A girl can dream, right?”
Evie quickly texted Sarah and told her that she was home, and that caring for Teddy was no longer needed.
The next morning, Caleb helped her haul her trash bags down to the yard and was kind enough to help with her dishes and finally fix that stupid cupboard door.
While they listened to the local rock radio station, he taught her exactly how to fix it, and it dawned on her that it actually wasn’t that hard.
He was a great teacher. Occasionally, they would exchange warm smiles, and once she even playfully poked his butt with the screwdriver.
It was alright though. He got her back by spraying her with the sink attachment and smacking her ass.
The whole morning was nothing but fun, laughter, kissing, hugs.
All the things he had missed out on for so long.
It was all the way she got him to laugh.
He realized how spoiled he was getting with her.
That weekend he had stayed every night. The morning hugs, the soft kisses, asking how he slept, getting the best back and scalp scratches ever, the kisses planted all over his body, the food she cooked for him.
Everything. But it was now time to turn back to his work, and so he left her that morning and promised that after the week, he would come back and see her.
She waved him off as he walked to his truck, and he took off down the driveway.
Suddenly he slammed on his brakes before the end when that damn Alan Moffet tore down the road, swerved up into her driveway a bit, and knocked Evie’s mailbox right over!
At once, Evie ran as hard as she could down the long driveway calling his name and almost slipped on thin ice. “Caleb! Are you alright?”
Caleb got out of the truck and looked at her box. “Yeah, I’m fine, but damn!” he scorned as he tried to lift up the post. It was ruined and fell back over. “Don’t worry. I’ll come by this weekend and fix it.”
As Caleb picked up her mail, Sarah called out as she rushed across the road. “Caleb! Oh my God, are you okay?”
“Yeah, I’m fine. The mailbox ain’t.”
Sarah said with her hands in her hair, “It doesn’t matter. As long as you’re okay! Evie, are you alright?”
Evie wrapped her pink robe around her a bit more. Not that she was naked underneath, just cold. “I’m shaken up but okay. I’m glad he has good reflexes! With that person stalking me and now this, I probably should get a ring camera.”
Sarah gasped, “Someone’s stalking you?”
“Yeah,” Caleb answered dryly again, putting the post and box in the bed of his truck so that it didn’t get further damage. “She doesn’t know who, but someone is.”
Sarah said, “I have a ring camera. I’ll take a look back at the house.”
“Thank you, Sarah. That means a lot. I’ve been meaning to get one, but I keep forgetting.”
Caleb hugged Evie quickly as not to cause any weird vibes, as Sarah was staring at them intensely. He said to Evie casually, “Be safe. I’ll be back this weekend to fix your basement.”
“Thanks, Caleb! And take care!”
When Caleb left and headed right, Sarah took a long hard stare at Evie. Evie shrugged. “What are you looking at? He literally hugged me.”
Sarah folded her arms and gave her a look. “Evie, you know he’s in the middle of a divorce, and the whole town knows he’s the most sought-after eligible bachelor now.”
Evie retorted, “That’s funny, because I thought everyone hated him. How can he be so desired yet so hated at the same time?”
Sarah kept her arms crossed. “Seems like you’re not denying it now.”
“I’m simply responding to what you said, Sarah.
There’s nothing going on between he and I.
” Evie was completely trapped. Caleb had told her that he didn’t want to wait for her anymore, but she also still didn’t want to gamble their secret, either.
She had to somehow try to keep it contained as best as she could, but she was losing that battle more and more everyday.
Sarah approached and put her hand on Evie’s shoulder and raised her brows, trying to care. “Evie, I don’t want you getting hurt. Ashley is on a warpath right now because of him being around you. You told me that everyone’s talking about it, and I saw the comments on your Facebook page.”
Evie rolled her eyes. “Oh, for God’s sake. It literally doesn’t matter what I do. People are going to talk. There’s literally nothing I can do to stop it now, all because of the person who told Sandy.”
“You came home with him Saturday morning, in his truck.”
Evie glared at her, and then her head turned to the left in a warning look. “He gave me a ride home from the hospital.”
“Where did you stay Friday night? I didn’t get your text that Teddy was cool until Saturday morning!”
“Why the fuck are you interrogating me? You’re not Ashley’s lawyer, nor are you my mother!”
Sarah shot back, “Listen! I’m trying to prevent you from getting his kids taken away!
You can’t keep crying about the town gossiping about you having a fling with him but then pull shit like this!
Like coming home with him in his truck after being gone all night!
Joshua and I stayed and took care of your cat, and I swear to God, if you were out having a fling that night while we took care of your cat, I’m gonna be pissed!
If you don’t want the town talking about you two, then stay the fuck away from him! ”
Evie grew tepid in her emotions. “Why wouldn’t you defend me on social media? Why would you talk to me like this instead of having my back? You don’t really think these things, do you?”
Sarah threw her hands up in agitation. “I honestly don’t know. I believed you when you went into the hospital. But now with this? I don’t know. But I do know that I care about you. And you’re going to ruin your business endeavors here in this town if you get your identity from a booty call!”
Evie was on the verge of tears until Joshua appeared from across the street. He only meant to call his wife back for help with the animals. Before she left, she turned and faced Evie to give her one last hard look.
The horrible reality was that as Evie went inside, she realized Sarah wasn’t wrong. The more she and Caleb were together, the heavier the chances were. She texted him, “When is the divorce being signed? Do you know?”
Once again, she deleted it in a sigh. She didn’t want to ruin a good weekend.
She thumbed through her mail as she sat on the couch by Teddy and thought about who could have told Sandy.
No one else came to her mind until she thought…
The mailbox.
Alan fucking Moffet.
And perhaps somehow Kelly fucking Potts.
She did what any sane woman would do. She first made her profile completely private then unfriended every single person except for Caleb, her brother, Joshua and Sarah, and Deputy Hunt.
It had to be a delicate thing, and she tossed over more potentials in her mind.
There were numerous nasty comments, weird messages, and everything that she had to clear out.
But she had taken so many beatings lately that now they didn’t even faze her.
Then Evie noticed a peculiar friend request popping up. It was Alan Moffet.
And the mutual friend had been Sandy Stottlemeyer, before she had removed her from her friend list and got blocked. Taking a chance, Evie sent him a message. “Hey, Alan! I’m gonna come straight out and ask if you’ve been telling people about Caleb and I.”
She wasn’t surprised in the least when he didn’t respond or even see the message.
Until 2:00 a.m. She rolled over wide awake now, hoping it was Caleb. Her heart picked up a little bit when she saw Alan wrote back. He said, “I don’t give a fuck about Caleb. I have no idea who the fuck you are.”
She couldn’t help but laugh! She wrote, “You knocked my mailbox over today with your truck. And you sent me a friend request.”
The charming Alan wrote back, “So? I’m supposed to be sorry about it?”
Then he blocked her. It was weird how he had sent her a friend request then acted really odd. Perhaps he was on a drunken warpath again.
“Whew,” Evie sighed as she petted Teddy. “Caleb wasn’t wrong. He is a peach!”
But in a mad rush of mania and confusion, Evie pulled the plug on everything and deactivated her entire account. She needed the peace.
