“Thank you. I wish you’d come. I had to beat up your friend,” she said, flooring me.

“Who? LaMia?”

Sucking her teeth, she replied, “No, Tarin. She saw your name pop up on my phone last night and got pissed. Got all in my face, calling me a bitch, and so I let her ass have it.”

I was cracking the hell up.

I knew how Tarin was from dealing with her for years, and she was all bark and no bite.

I wasn’t a fighter, and she’d peeped game, so she’d run her mouth often, throwing out verbal haymakers knowing there wouldn’t be much consequences.

I already knew she’d judged Daylin by her small height and pretty face, thinking she was a punk, so I was happy her ass learned the hard way.

In my humble opinion, though, Daylin looked feisty. I didn’t get pushover vibes at the sight of her even a little bit.

“Damn, now I do wish I was there.” I snickered. “Other than that?”

“It’s going great. Their dad is a fucking creep. And even though Josias gets on my nerves with his behavior, he and Rakim are the only normal ones of the living.”

“Very true.” I nodded, knowing how Nate Godfrey gave me bad vibes when I met him, too, constantly flirting with me or just watching me from across the room with no real expression on his face.

To make matters worse, he wasn’t a small man in the slightest. At six feet, eight inches and probably almost 400 pounds, he was the biggest nigga I’d ever seen in person.

To know he abused his children and wife was a scary thought.

I couldn’t imagine having to fend off a man of that stature with no weapon.

And honestly, the nigga looked like he could take a bat to the head and keep on ticking.

“How are you?” she questioned.

“I’m actually . . . okay. I met a man today at work, and he asked for my number, then mentioned a date, and now I feel tense.”

“It’s something and someone new. You’re used to Josias and probably why you’ve taken him back so many times.” Daylin talked as she did her makeup, which I could only tell because I could hear the items clinking together in the background. It was somehow satisfying.

“That actually makes sense.” I switched lanes, relaxing in my seat a bit. “So I should go, right?”

“If you want to. But don’t not go because you’re afraid. Now if you have a bad feeling about his ass, then stay home, but if it’s just nervousness from stepping into dating, then go. Think of it as fun and nothing serious. You don’t have to make him your man or even see him again after one date.”

I bobbed my head, chewing on her words for a moment. She was definitely right. I was putting too much into this shit with Darron, and I guessed because the two men I’d given my number to had become my boyfriend. I’d never casually dated anyone. The one time I tried, Josias interfered.

“Thank you,” I said.

“Anytime.”

We chatted for a bit more before Rakim had come into the room of whichever one she was in, telling me bye for her, and I didn’t even wanna know why. He mentioned a promise she made when Daylin tried to argue though.

My mind did drift to my own sexual needs, but I would just have to satisfy myself. And since my mama was keeping Divine for the night, I would drink some wine, run a bath, and do just that.

DATE NIGHT . . .

It was now Tuesday, my off day, and after spending all day yesterday talking to Darron, I felt comfortable agreeing to meet him for dinner.

He was easy to talk to and funny as well.

He didn’t pressure me to flirt with him or talk sexually, which was nice.

And when he did flirt, it was very smooth and subtle, not bringing me any discomfort at all.

I did like men who were aggressive and natural pursuers to an extent, but it was nice when a man knew to just chill.

From talking to him, I’d learned that he was a lawyer, twenty-nine, and hadn’t been in a relationship for the past three years.

Pulling up to valet at Fogo de Chao, I slid out of my Lexus truck with the valet attendant’s assistance before rounding the back to make my way up to the entrance. As soon as I stepped in, ready to tell the hostess who I was there for, Darron popped into view.

“I decided to wait up here for you.” He smiled down at me before we embraced.

Certain things were small but meant a lot to me, and this was one of them.

“That was nice. Thank you.” I felt the blush creep into my cheeks as Darron let the hostess know we were ready for our table.

We trailed the young black girl through the restaurant that was littered with waiters rushing around offering different cuts of meat. I’d never been here before, so seeing this setup was intriguing to me.

Once seated, Darron asked, “Ever been here?”

“I haven’t.” I shook my head before listening intently to him explaining the way things worked. “So we just keep eating until we’re full?”

“Exactly.” He grinned, leaning back just as our waiter approached.

We ordered some drinks—him getting an old fashioned while I got a lemon drop—and then he ordered for us to have every kind of meat, once I let him know I had no restrictions, plus some sides.

“I did what you said and didn’t eat a lot today, so I am starving. But don’t get upset with how I throw down with this food,” I said.
