Part One… #6
“Baby,” Adair’s face scrunched up in confusion. “Let me ask you somethin’.”
“Anything,” Sabine sat straight up giving him her undivided attention.
“You went to your dad or mom’s house for break?”
“My…I’m…my dad’s house.”
“Oh okay, so y’all have the same dining chairs?”
“Huh?”
“Why are you lying?”
“Lying? I’m not, I…”
“Then you not sitting your ass on your own dining room chair right now?”
Sabine looked behind her realizing Adair paid a little too much attention to detail. That’s a pre-law major for you.
“What’s going on baby?”
“I…” Sabine dropped her head. “I didn’t want to go home so I stayed at school.”
“Why? And why didn’t you tell me? I would’ve stayed up there with you.”
“No, and miss spending time with your family? It’s fine.”
“Talk to me.”
“It’s fine.”
“Sabine…”
“Adair, I said it’s fine.”
“But I know it ain’t and you can tell me when it’s not…so talk to me.”
Sighing heavily, she came clean. “I…I told you that I basically have two moms.”
“Right. Your mom and your stepmom.”
“When I’m home, I’m expected to spend the holidays with my dad and his wife, Karen.
Even my own mom pressures me to be there and…
” she sniffled, wiping the tears sliding down her cheeks.
“All I’ve ever wanted was to spend these special times with someone who actually wanted me there because they simply did.
Not for a photo op, not by a man’s orders, just because they love me. ”
“Baby…” Adair sympathetically stared into the camera.
“It’s fine,” Sabine wiped her eyes. “It’s fine…I’ll call you back,” she hurriedly ended the call slamming her laptop shut. She dropped her head onto the table and cried her heart out.
11:55 PM
Sabine had been ignoring everyone’s calls. Especially her mom and dad’s. Adair was relentless with the texts, but she couldn’t bring herself to respond. She felt pathetic crying over spilled milk. She watched the clock wind down with a glass of wine and spider rolls.
Usually, she and Narri would’ve snuck away by now and held themselves up in a hotel somewhere getting drunk, laughing, making out while talking about all the things they wanted to accomplish.
Adair was calling once again.
“Stop…” she groaned closing her eyes, leaning back into the couch.
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! Someone was beating her door down. Sabine sat up peeking over towards the front of her apartment when it started again.
“Who is it?!”
“Open this goddamn door!” Adair’s voice roared from the other side.
Sabine covered her mouth slowly getting up. She barely had the door cracked when he barged in kissing her all over.
“What…what are you doing here?”
“I didn’t want you to spend this night alone. I love you and I promise I’m here solely because I want to be with you.”
“You drove five hours for me?”
“I sped four and half hours for you.”
Sabine’s forehead collided with his chest as she digested his words. Her superman had come and saved the day. Adair brought her to the couch putting her in his lap.
“You didn’t need to leave your family for me.”
“No, but you needed me more. If I had time, I would’ve driven us back and we could’ve got drunk as hell with my mom, aunties and cousins.”
“See…now I feel bad, even earlier when we were on video everyone looked like they were having so much fun.”
“Don’t worry about that, just know, starting now, you’ll never have to spend another holiday alone again…” looking at the clock, he turned to her and smiled. “Happy New Year, baby.”
“Happy New Year.”
MAY 17, 2011
Sabine sat with Adair’s family as they watched his name be called, accept his degree pointing it right at his mother while shouting “This for you Pamela!” and she screamed back, “THAT’S MY MUTHAFUCKIN’ BABY!”
Adair had a close relationship with his mother that Sabine wished she could have with hers.
For months they’d been in relationship bliss. Adair was the epitome of best boyfriend ever. They had their moments where she sometimes needed to be put in her place and that was when Sabine learned not to try him too much. He was the nicest person in the world until he wasn’t.
“Look at my law-abiding citizen ass nephew!” his aunt Terri elated as Adair made his way through the crowd towards them. “Don’t let them get me on that assault charge neph.”
“I got you, auntie,” Adair laughed embracing her.
Sabine stood back allowing his loved ones to congratulate and smother the first person in their family to graduate college.
“Go hug your man girl!” Terri nudged Sabine.
They had welcomed her with open arms over the past several months and everything she knew about family had been disproven by being around them. Circumstances didn’t stop their love and loyalty to one another.
“Congratulations,” Sabine said, having to stand on her tippy toes even in heels. “I’m so proud of you.”
“Thank you, baby,” Adair lifted her off her feet swinging her around. “We did it!”
Sabine loved how ever since they met it was always “we” and “us.” Adair had big plans before they met and adjusted them to include her in every single one of them.
They engaged in a passionate kiss right in the center of all the graduation mayhem. Neither could hear any of the noise within each other’s embrace.
“Alright now, cut that shit out!” Pam swatted Sabine’s behind with her ceremony pamphlet.
“We’ll meet y’all at the restaurant, Ma.”
“No stoppin’ for hanky panky,” she warned them. “You got family waiting to celebrate you boy.”
“Okay, momma...”
Sabine snickered as Adair led her to his car. He was on the phone most of the ride, receiving call after call congratulating him. Many of them saying how he made it out and warning him to keep his head on straight.
“Why do they keep saying you’re the one?” Sabine asked, after he’d finished up a call.
Adair smiled, grabbing her hand, giving it a soft kiss.
“Where I’m from, going to college not really the goal, surviving is.
I’m sure you saw that when I took you there.
I could’ve got sucked in, I almost did to be honest, but I had people in my corner making sure I made school a priority.
So, when they saying I made it out and calling me the one, it just means I walked across that stage carrying an entire community on back.
I’m bringing one home, and I won’t ever forget where I come from. ”
“That’s…that’s incredibly honorable and sweet, Adair.”
“It’s just what it is and I’m not ashamed of it.”
“As you shouldn’t be…”
They arrived at the restaurant hand in hand—entering to cheers, streamers, balloons and music. Pam had rented out the place for a celebration and it seemed as if everyone Adair knew was in attendance.
Eventually they’d gotten split up, so Sabine sat at one of the tables while watching him own the room. Adair had such a big heart, and you could tell it was pure because he received so much love in return.
“Hey bitch!” Adair’s cousin, Reeka greeted her with a hug.
“Hi…”
“You alright? Why you sittin’ all by yourself?”
“Oh…I’m just chilling.” Sabine never intentionally excluded herself however, in the past, being in crowds of people ever since she was a child, meeting strangers, being coached and pushed into the limelight—center of attention, it all kind of forced her to introversion.
“Sabine,” Reeka laughed. “You so funny.”
CLINK! CLINK! CLINK!”
“I wanna make a toast,” Adair announced.
“Ooh, girl,” Reeka grabbed Sabine’s hand nearly dragging her to the front. “Let’s go see what your man talkin’ bout.”
“First off, thank y’all for coming out to celebrate me man, this…it mean the world.”
“Cause we love you baby!” Pam shouted.
“And I love y’all too, forreal…everybody in this room know what it took for me to get here and…
” Adair coughed, trying to keep his emotions from coming to the surface.
“As far as I go, I’ll never forget where I came from.
Any open cases…” he started making everyone laugh.
It was a running joke that he’d work pro bono for them when he passed the bar.
“For real though, from the bottom of my heart, I love y’all. ”
“We love you too!” several voices swooned at the same time which caused Sabine’s attention to search for the culprits. Her eyes landed on a group of girls huddled together eye-sexing her boyfriend.
“Sabine, baby, can you come here?” Adair asked, and she started shaking like earthquake.
“Come here,” he smiled, and she nervously walked towards his extended hand.
“Everybody, this my girl, Sabine, if y’all haven’t met her already…
we haven’t been together for that long but,” he turned to face her.
“From the moment I laid eyes on you baby, I knew. I knew that I was going to spend the rest of my life with you.”
“Oh shit!” somebody shouted.
“Sabine Miyan Knight,” Adair got down on one knee and her shaky hands flew to her mouth.
“I can’t go to New York; I can’t start this part of my life without you with me.
” Retrieving a very modest but beautiful ring from his pocket, he watched her breathing become erratic.
“I love you and as fast as this has been for us, only give me an honest answer, you know I’m not ashamed to be embarrassed,” he spoke truthfully and that got a smile out of her. “I’m asking because—”
“Yes!” she screamed, not needing any convincing. He had her at hello.
The whole room clapped and cheered in celebration of both the graduate and now engagement.
But again, the noise—the noise didn’t exist as they shared true love’s kiss.
3:37 AM
“Please! Please!” Sabine begged but did not under any circumstances want Adair to stop. All she could see was ceiling since he had her neck nearly snapped, a handful of hair and a grip on her left ass cheek.
Adair was heavily intoxicated so currently Sabine was being beat into the mattress by all of that hard horny dick—add being newly engaged and they were getting downright disgusting.
Hot, sticky air now coated the room.
