Chapter Twelve
Rennedy
"I'm just saying, I called this," I said, grinning at Lindor across the table. "I've been trying to set you two up for months, and all it took was Jonah being a dick."
"You're enjoying this way too much," Lindor said, but she was smiling.
"Of course I am! My best friend is dating my brother. Do you know how perfect this is? We're going to be sisters!"
"Whoa, slow down. We've been together for like a week."
"A week of non-stop sex and heart-eyes. I've seen the way you look at him, Lin. You're gone."
She blushed. Actually blushed. "It's... different with him. Good different."
"Because he's not a controlling asshole who treats you like a dirty secret?"
"That helps." She took a sip of her coffee. "But it's more than that. He makes me feel... seen. Like he actually wants to know me, not just sleep with me."
"That's because he does. Axel's been crazy about you forever. I kept telling you, but you were too hung up on Jonah to notice."
"I wasn't hung up on Jonah. I was just—"
"Hung up on Jonah," I finished. "But that's okay. You're over him now, right?"
She hesitated. "He won't stop trying to contact me."
"Block him."
"I did. He's using other numbers. Showed up at my apartment twice. Freddy said he's been asking about me constantly."
"Want me to handle it?"
"No. I just want him to accept that it's over and move on."
"He will. Eventually. Guys like Jonah don't handle rejection well, but he'll get bored and find someone else to control."
"He has Chelsea."
"Please. Chelsea was a placeholder. He doesn't want her. He wants you, but only on his terms." I reached across the table, squeezed her hand. "You did the right thing, walking away. And you definitely did the right thing choosing Axel."
"I didn't choose Axel to get back at Jonah."
"I know. But it's a nice bonus, right?"
She laughed. "Maybe a little."
My phone buzzed. Axel.
Axel: Is she still with you?
Me: Yes, why?
Axel: Jonah just showed up at my apartment. Pounding on the door, demanding to see Lindor.
Me: Oh shit.
Axel: Yeah. I told him she's not here and to leave. He's not leaving.
I looked at Lindor. "We need to go. Now."
"What's wrong?"
"Jonah's at Axel's apartment. He thinks you're there."
Her face went pale. "Fuck."
We grabbed our stuff and ran.
