Chapter Five

PATIENCE

“They went where?” I screeched.

We’d all sat down to dinner, but Lyric was missing. Without thought, I’d asked where he was, and Ruby averted her gaze and didn’t respond.

“For heaven's sake, tell the poor girl,” Gramps grumbled.

After the longest sigh I’d ever heard, Ruby explained that Lyric and Gyth had gone to see Jett.

Autumn and Griffin both whined that they’d wanted to go too.

“I miss my brother,” the little girl said.

Tristan was born after Jett had left so he wasn’t attached to Jett, but he copied everything his sister and Griffin did, so he had to jump in with a whine of his own in agreement.

Ruby and Jett were Autumn’s brother and sister, but when Ruby and Lyric adopted Autumn, she began calling them Mom and Dad. After everything she’d been through, she longed for that connection.

My eyes strayed to my son. He longed so much for Jett to be his daddy.

When I looked back at Ruby, I narrowed my eyes. “You promised, and so did Lyric.”

She clamped her lips together and gave a slight shrug.

“For Pete’s sake spit it out, girl,” Gramps told her.

“Spitting food isn’t nice,” Autumn told him.

Even annoyed and worried, I couldn’t help but laugh. Then I composed myself and narrowed my eyes once again.

“Tell me what they are doing there if you guys promised not to tell Jett anything!” I demanded.

I might be shy a lot of the time, but when push came to shove, I could hold my own.

“You’re right; Lyric and I had promised you,” she said, drawing it out and giving me an odd look.

Sitting there for a minute, I let her words sink in. And that’s when I realized my mistake from the beginning.

She was correct; they had promised me.

Ruby put her arms in the air, palms up, as if to say, What can I do? It’s legit.

“I see from that look that you just caught on.”

Yup, I was clued in now.

I hadn’t made any of the others promise me a thing.

And Gyth was there.
