Epilogue
“An inmate from Halifax County Prison is trying to contact you. To accept this call, please press one.” The beep sounds as I tap my finger against the keypad on my cell phone, and a dialing tone follows before it finally connects.
“Can you believe that bitch actually mailed me an invitation to our high school reunion? What does she think, the prison is going to give me furlough so I can go back to the place I was arrested?” Emily’s voice comes through the receiver in a low tone, as if she could get in any more trouble.
“Yeah I got one too. Mine came online though, so I guess you’re pretty special if you got a paper one.” I chide.
“Are you going?” she asked.
I’d rather douse myself in communion wine and crawl inside my oven than go to my high school reunion. But I have always been very good at doing things I don’t want to.
