Chapter 28 Evelyn
TWENTY-EIGHT
EVELYN
I choked on a piece of chicken. Literally choked on a piece of meat and not the fun kind!
The paramedics were called to the restaurant when Kade was unable to help me with the Heimlich. The amount of embarrassment I felt from the spectacle I created was enough for an entire lifetime.
After I assured the paramedic I was okay and didn’t need to go to the hospital for the fifth time they finally left the scene.
Way to act cool Evelyn when you get offered the opportunity you need to fulfill your mission.
Kade rubbed my back. “Are you sure you’re okay?”
“Yes, can you please just take me home before Gepetto bans me from this heavenly place.”
Kade laughed. “He doesn’t have a say in that, princess. Or he will have to answer to me. Seeing as how I own the place.”
I groaned. “Ugh, of course you do. I still don’t think I can show my face here anytime soon.”
He helped me stand and ushered me out of the restaurant. I stared at the ground, avoiding all the awkward stares I was surely receiving.
As we pulled up to my apartment building, Kade snuggled me to him. I melted into him, loving his amber-sandalwood scent. “I’ll walk you up.”
I went to protest but was stopped when Kade placed a finger on my lips. “I am not letting you out of my sight until I know you are safe in your home.”
My heart squeezed at his protectiveness. As I got out of the vehicle, I quickly noticed I had a notification from Aaron letting me know he was in my apartment, claiming that Alfredo had called him because he missed him.
My heart began to race. I needed to make sure that Kade did not try to go into my apartment. No way did I have the energy to explain why Aaron was there.
When we got to my apartment door, I leaned on it and faced Kade.
“See, I am home safe and sound. No need to worry.”
Kade moved a strand of hair from my face and swept it behind my ear. His eyes never left mine. “When it comes to you, I will always worry about your safety.” He pressed a soft kiss to my lips.
Before it could deepen, I pulled away.
“I’m going to take a bath and get some sleep. I’ll see you tomorrow, okay?” I bit my lower lip, praying internally that he wouldn’t protest.
“Okay.” He pressed a kiss to my forehead while cupping my cheeks. “Goodnight princess, I’ll see you tomorrow.”
“Goodnight, Mr. Romano.”
As Kade walked down the hall I realized I had not said anything about the promotion.
“Kade?”
He turned. “Mhm?”
“Thank you for the opportunity with Ricci Enterprises. I would be honored.”
He smiled. “You earned it, princess. I’ll see you tomorrow.”
I watched him until he got onto the elevator and the doors closed.
When I walked into my apartment, I was met by two guilty faces.
I tilted my head. “Um, why do you two look like you were caught taking cookies out of the cookie jar?”
Aaron gave me a sheepish grin and I noticed the TV was on, the show paused.
My eyes widened. “You were watching New Girl without me?”
Alfredo jumped off Aaron’s lap as if to say, you’re on your own dude.
Aaron immediately turned off the TV , jumping off the couch and walking over to me, his arms stretched out as if he were trying to cage a wild animal. “It’s not what it seems like!”
I pretended to be angry and pouted. “We are fighting, sir!”
I squealed when Aaron picked me up and swung me over his shoulder like a caveman and slapped my ass.
“If we are fighting then I need to make it up to you.”
I laughed at his reasoning. “Put me down, you brute! I almost died from a piece of chicken! I need rest!” I swatted on his back.
Aaron stilled and quickly set me on my feet to inspect me for injuries. “What do you mean?”
“I choked at dinner. I am fine, I was even checked out by paramedics. All I want is a shower and some sleep.”
Aaron nodded but continued to inspect me some more. “I’ll start a bath for you. Get undressed.”
I didn’t have the energy to argue, nor did I have the energy to think about how bitchy I felt having two men in my life. Maybe I could try again tomorrow. For now, a bath sounded wonderful.
