Epilogue

PIPER

Fire season is ending. The mountain going gray toward winter. The aspens above town have gone from gold to bare in the two weeks since I started at the clinic.

Reid Wren does not look glad the fires are out. He checks gear that doesn't need checking. He is only fully still when something is burning.

I am at the Summit on a Thursday evening when a woman I haven't seen before comes through the door. Professional, precise. A county seal on her jacket. She speaks to Dottie. She has a name on a piece of paper.

Reid looks up from his drink.

He goes still.

The End

She arrived with a job to do.

He was not in her plans.
