Chapter 19

I scream

Scream.

Scream.

Before, I had found a reprieve in numbness, but that’s been torn away. Violently.

Even the Piper’s command to fight, that stubbornness he stoked—it’s been ripped away.

Gone.

I can’t fight against this pain. I can’t fight, period.

This agony is unlike anything I’ve ever felt before. It makes me nothing.

Nothing but suffering.

And so I scream.

Scream.

Scream into the mattress, while sharp knives rake down my back.

Until I pass out.
