Chapter 29

Pepper

I had been at my studio office desk for the last two hours, the familiar, sharp scent of Tokyo rain and premium espresso filling the quiet room.

Priscilla was leaning directly over my shoulder, her fingers tapping against a glossy tech-sheet as we meticulously went over the color-grading metrics for an upcoming Japanese editorial layout.

I was trying my absolute best to immerse myself in my old routine, desperately fighting to convince my brain that this minimalist high-rise was exactly where I belonged.

Suddenly, a loud, distinct ping echoed through the sleek studio monitors. An automated notification lit up the corner of my screen. New email. One master video file attached.

Without even double-thinking, assuming it was a routine digital asset delivery from Jolt’s secure cloud drive, I moving my mouse over and clicked it open.

I literally gasped, my hand flying to my mouth as Aaron’s face appeared sharply on the display screen.

My heart did a violent, agonizing roll against my ribs. I couldn't move. I couldn't breathe. Every single bit of my high-fashion armor shattered into dust right there in my chair. Without a shred of hesitation, ignoring the logical voice in my head telling me to close the tab, I clicked play.

The screen bloomed into a softly lit room.

Aaron was sitting directly in front of the lens in a simple director's chair, looking impossibly broad, real, and entirely striking. The raw tape-hiss filled the speakers, and then Cal’s familiar, brotherly voice came through on the other end, asking him what love looks like to him.

On screen, Aaron sat completely silent for a quiet beat, genuinely thinking. Then, he let out a slow, helpless smile—the exact kind of smile he’d given me in the dark under the Texas lamplight.

He had captured me in a way that I had never, ever seen myself.

It was the most raw, purest version of me I had looked at and felt in a very long time.

Watching the montage, I could feel the ghost of the Texas humidity on my skin, remembering how completely electric I felt whenever I was standing right beside him on that set.

It wasn't just commercial b-roll; it was pure, unadulterated adoration digitized into art.

The dream cut right back to the director's chair. Aaron looked dead into the lens, his expression stripped of all corporate structure.

"Pepper," his deep voice rumbled through my office speakers.

And the screen cut to black.

The silence that followed was heavy, but my fingers were already moving frantically, scrolling down to the body of the attached email.

I began reading the long, deeply heartfelt message he had sent along with the file.

Every single sentence was a raw, beautiful pouring of his soul.

He laid his vulnerabilities entirely bare on the screen, explaining the panic of Monday morning and explicitly stating that no matter the distance or the rules, he couldn't fathom living without me in his life, some way, some how.

As the words blurred together through my tears, I completely forgot Priscilla was still standing right behind my shoulder.

"Damn," Priscilla whispered suddenly, her voice thick with absolute awe as she broke the silence of the room.

She leaned back from the desk, shaking her head as a massive, staggered smile crossed her face.

"Sorry, boss, but you seriously left that behind in Houston?

Phew... he is definitely one of God's absolute favorite creations... and he loves you, Pepper."

I sat frozen in my chair. My phone lay quiet on the desk, the Tokyo rain continued to smudge the glass windows outside, but the fortress I had built to run away from heartbreak had just been completely dismantled by a five-word email and a director's chair.

Before I even knew what I was doing, the pure adrenaline of the moment took over my entire body. I snapped my laptop shut, the metallic click echoing through the silent office as I spun my chair around.

"I’m sending you a list of production instructions the second I land," I babbled frantically, my hands shaking as I reached for the designer purse sitting on the edge of my desk.

Priscilla blinked, her eyes widening in total, frantic confusion. "Land? Land from where, boss?"

"Houston," I said, not even slowing down my stride as I zipped my purse, threw my cardigan over my shoulder, and headed straight out the glass double doors toward the high-rise parking garage.

"Pepper, wait!" Priscilla shouted after me, completely stunned. "You just got back sixteen hours ago!"

I didn't listen. I couldn't. I ran straight to my car, tore through the gloomy, rain-slicked streets of Tokyo back to my apartment, and spent less than ten minutes packing a half-ass bag.

I didn't care what clothes were inside, didn't care about a wardrobe or a curated look. All I could see was the memory of Aaron’s face in that director's chair.

I sped down the highway to Narita Airport, my heart hammering violently against my ribs like a trapped bird.

When I finally skidded up to the main ticketing desk, out of breath and completely disheveled, the representative looked at my passport and checked her screen with a tight, apologetic grimace.

"I’m sorry, Ms. Swanson, but all direct flights to Houston are completely booked for the evening," she said, her fingers clicking rapidly against the keyboard before she glanced down at her watch.

The digital face read exactly 8:15 PM. "The absolute earliest I can get you on is a standby list for a flight departing tomorrow morning at eight sharp.

I can issue the gate pass now if you'd like to wait inside the terminal. "

"Yes. Please," I gasped out, handing over my corporate card.

The next few hours were an absolute, exhausting test of my sanity.

I went through security in a complete haze and found a row of empty, cold metal chairs near the international terminal gate.

The massive glass windows showed nothing but the dark Tokyo night and the flashing runway lights.

I sat there huddled in my oversized cardigan, clutching my passport, completely trapped in the quiet space of my own mind.

By midnight, my eyes grew heavy with the weight of the timezone shifts, the emotional exhaustion finally catching up to me.

I curled my legs up onto the airport chair, resting my head against my leather bag, and let the hollow hum of the terminal drop me into a deep, restless sleep.

"Pepper."

The voice was a low, gravelly rumble, cutting right through the fog of my sleep.

It sounded so incredibly real, vibrating straight through the center of my chest, that a small whimper left my throat.

I squeezed my eyes shut, shifting against the hard metal armrest, entirely convinced my mind was just playing a cruel trick on me, weaving another vivid daydream out of the email I’d read earlier.

"Wake up, Pepper."

A warm, heavy palm gently brushed against the side of my face, his thumb softly tracing the curve of my cheekbone. The familiar, high-end cologne scent whisked past my nose, and the sheer physical heat of that touch had my eyes snapping wide open.

Confused and disoriented, I violently jumped up from the metal chair, my eyes darting wildly around the terminal to make sure I was still at Narita Airport.

The glowing digital signs were still in Japanese text, the boarding gate was right in front of me, and the terminal clock read exactly 4:30 AM.

But standing directly over me, completely dominating the space, was Aaron.

He was holding a leather duffel bag in one hand, his jaw freshly shadowed with a day's worth of stubble, looking completely exhausted from a fourteen-hour flight—but those dark, intense eyes were smiling softly down at me.

"Aaron..." I whispered, my voice cracked, my mind spinning into a state of total shock. "Wha... how are you... how are you even here?!"

He didn't even get a chance to answer. Before a single syllable could leave his mouth, the absolute gravity of his presence hit me so hard that my pride vanished into the air.

I threw myself violently into his massive arms, burying my face into the crisp fabric of his shirt as I let out a jagged, painful series of heavy sobs.

I gripped his shoulders, the words rushing out of my mouth in one single, frantic sentence. "I am so incredibly foolish, Aaron, who was I even kidding? I am so deeply in love with you too, Aaron, and I am so sorry for completely shutting you out... again."

Aaron’s arms wrapped securely around my waist, his massive frame instantly lifting my feet right off the airport tile as he pulled me flush against his chest, holding me so tight I could feel the thunderous, rapid rhythm of his heartbeat echoing right into mine.
