Chapter 31 #2

"No, but seriously," I said, my voice softening into a more honest register as I looked around at the clear blue sky and felt the thick heat radiating off the lawn.

I shifted my gaze back to Aaron, my heart doing a warm, happy thud against my ribs.

"Being back in Japan for that month, the weather felt gloomy and grey.

And y'all know how much I love me some Texas weather. "

"There really is no place like Houston," Jonah said, his smooth, booming voice cutting through the backyard chatter as he approached. He wore a casual designer tee and shorts, looking relaxed despite anchoring the city’s defense this week.

Jonah went around the table, exchanging quick handshakes with the guys before pulling me, Nia, and Stormy into giant hugs.

"Tell her, man," Aaron chuckled, leaning back in his chair and sliding a large, warm hand onto the small of my back, his touch sending an instant, comforting wave of heat straight up my spine. "She’s out here complaining about the Tokyo clouds but still acting stubborn about her return ticket."

"Look, all I'm saying is that you can’t buy this kind of sunshine in Asia," Jonah grinned, snatching a piece of brisket off Jalen's plate before Jalen could swat his hand away. "Plus, the Apollos are on a hot streak."

I leaned my weight back against Aaron’s broad chest as he pulled my chair a fraction of an inch closer to his.

The loud banter of the people I loved washed over me, the sweet smell of barbecue smoke drifted through the air, and the solid weight of Aaron beside me made Japan feel a million miles away.

I looked at Mars, who was happily piling another scoop of potato salad onto her plate, her secret safely tucked between us for a few more hours, and I realized my defenses were gone.

Texas wasn't just a location anymore; it was rapidly becoming the only future I could see clearly.

A few moments after eating, dancing, laughing, and partaking in some chaotic backyard karaoke, the summer night was at its peak.

The patio lights glowed amber against the dark Texas sky, and everyone was having the best time.

Suddenly, the music cut out, and Jalen and Mars hopped on the microphone near the outdoor bar.

"We appreciate everybody for coming out and being here tonight," Jalen's booming voice filled the yard, his arm wrapped securely around Mars’s waist. "We seriously wouldn't have wanted to end the summer with anyone else."

"And," Mars chimed in, a radiant, emotional smile taking over her face as she reached down into a decorative gift bag on the counter, "we wouldn't have wanted to share this news with a better crowd."

Mars pulled out a glossy, black-and-white strip of actual ultrasound pictures straight from the doctor's office, lifting the physical sonogram paper high into the air.

The backyard exploded. Everybody was screaming, jumping up and down, knocking over lawn chairs, and running toward the patio to throw their arms around the couple.

The girls rushed forward to crowd around Mars, fighting to get a closer look at the tiny, precious script from the clinic printed on the margins of the photos. It was amazing and beautiful.

In the middle of the chaos, Aaron looked down at me with wide eyes, whispering, "Woah..." in hilarious shock. I just burst out laughing, leaning into his chest, amused by the fact that the secret had already been safe with the girls for hours. The night was simply perfect.

After we finally said our heartfelt farewells to the family and headed back to Aaron’s house, a quiet, warm bubble settled over us.

But the moment we stepped into his dim foyer, both of our cell phones gave a sharp, synchronized corporate ping.

We froze in our tracks, looking at each other with wide, breathless smiles.

Without a single word, we sprinted down the hallway into his home office, and he booted up his desktop editing bay to pull up the high-priority email from Elena and the Jolt marketing board. The text on the dual monitors read flawlessly:

Subject: FINAL APPROVED ASSETS you have successfully redefined our brand silhouette.

This campaign is officially closed, approved, and fully funded.

As a courtesy, our media buy agency has fast-tracked the digital rollout ahead of the global Q4 launch.

The master flagship asset is officially live on the high-visibility billboard display in Times Square, New York, as of midnight tonight.

Outstanding work, Co-Creative Leads. We look forward to our next quarter contract.

Best regards,

Elena Vance

VP, Global Creative Operations — Jolt HQ

My hands trembled against the edge of the wooden desk. "Aaron... pull up the live traffic cam," I whispered, my voice tight with rushing adrenaline.

Aaron’s fingers flew across the keyboard shortcuts, rapidly opening the high-resolution New York public camera stream. He maximized the display window, and the screen bloomed into the bright, flashing neon landscape of midnight in Times Square.

We searched the display, and right there, towering beautifully over the crowded streets of Manhattan, was our work.

It was a clean, breathtakingly sharp display of our lifestyle shoot from Leo's on 3rd.

The frame was raw, capturing a regular person in the fuchsia and sage green high-performance apparel, comfortably holding an espresso cup while stepping away from the industrial metal staircase.

The lighting was moody, the texturing was pristine, and our unified vision was officially being broadcast to the entire world.

I stared at the monitor, a tear of pure, overwhelming pride slipping down my cheek.

Aaron slowly pushed his chair back, standing up to his full height, and turned to look down at me. The rigid handbook was gone. The corporate parameters didn't exist. There was only the man who had chased me across an entire ocean to prove that our connection was the only rule that mattered.

"We did it, Pepper," he murmured, his deep voice thick with emotion as he slid his large hands back onto my waist, pulling me flush against his broad chest. "Even if we played a little bit out of focus."
