Playing the Part (Playing Along #1)

Playing the Part (Playing Along #1)

By Serena Sorrel

Prologue

I used to believe love was about finding someone.

Finding the person who makes the world feel a little less lonely. Whose presence becomes so familiar that you can't imagine your life without them. Who makes ordinary things feel worth remembering.

I thought love was supposed to be simple.

Until I met him.

There was nothing simple about him.

He was the kind of man people noticed before he even spoke. Powerful. Beautiful. Untouchable. The sort of man who could walk into a room and make everyone else feel like they had suddenly become part of his world.

But that wasn't the man I came to know. With me, he was impossibly gentle. Sometimes even vulnerable.

He remembered the smallest things. The flowers I liked.

The books I reread when I was lonely. The songs that made me smile.

The way I took my tea before bed because it helped me sleep.

He noticed everything… even when I was tired and I insisted I wasn't. He could make me laugh even when I was determined not to.

Then there were the other moments.

The moments when his tenderness became something darker.

His hand lingering around mine a little too long. The way his expression changed when another man stood too close to me. The quiet certainty in his voice whenever he reminded me that I belonged with him. Sometimes, I wondered if he knew how frightening that could be.

There is a difference between being loved and being wanted.

He loved me fiercely. But he also wanted me with a kind of intensity that sometimes felt beautiful and sometimes dangerous.

You must be wondering why I didn't run away? Why didn't I leave everything behind?

The honest answer would be I didn't want to.

Because even when I should’ve been afraid, there was a part of me that felt safest when I was in his arms.

Whenever he looked at me, there was something in his eyes that made my heart ache. It was almost as if he knew something I didn't. As if he was carrying a secret too heavy to put into words.

I know I should've walked away. Instead, I stepped closer.

Maybe that's the cruelest thing about love. We don't always fall for the person who makes the most sense. Sometimes we fall for the person who makes us question everything we thought we knew about ourselves.

He was that person for me.

He was tenderness wrapped around danger.

A beautiful contradiction.

I only knew that loving him changed me. But losing him altered my whole world.

There is a particular kind of silence that follows loss. It doesn't arrive all at once. It settles into your life quietly. It follows you home, sits beside you at night, and reminds you of everything you can no longer have.

You learn to live around it. You learn which memories to touch and which ones to leave alone.

How to smile when someone asks if you're all right.

And eventually, people assume you've moved on.

But they don't understand that some people don't leave when they disappear.

They remain in the little things of life.

A song playing in an empty room.

A familiar scent passing through a crowd.

A book left open on a table.

A particular kind of smile on a stranger's face.

Sometimes, your body learns to move through life without someone long before your heart learns how to let them go.

Mine didn't either.

Because he wasn't simply someone I loved.

He was a man who could hold me as though I were something precious.

Look at me with a possessiveness that made me feel like I had become a part of him in a way neither of us could explain.

He could be gentle enough to make me forget the darkness beneath his charm, yet intense enough to make me wonder whether being loved by him was something I should've surrendered to or something I should’ve feared.

Maybe it was both.

And there were secrets. So many secrets.

Some were mine.

Some were his.

And some belonged to a past neither of us was ready to face.

I didn't know how much of our story had already been written before our paths crossed.

Didn't know that some secrets are buried so deeply that even the truth can feel like a lie. For a long time, I kept asking myself how everything could’ve gone so wrong.

Maybe that's why I've decided to write my story now.

Not because I've forgotten the pain.

But because I've finally learned that sometimes, you have to walk back through the darkest parts of your past to understand why you survived them.

So today, me, Eliana Hart… I'm going to tell you my story.

The story of how I met Adrian Ashford. How I fell in love. Yet I lost him all over again before I finally understood what he’d always meant to me.

And it all began with the wrong SUV.
