Chapter 37 Corn Chips
Chapter thirty-seven
Corn Chips
Jo
“What do you want on your pizza?” Beau asks as he comes walking into the den after taking a shower.
When we got back to his place, he let me shower first and then went to take his. I was tempted to tell him to just join me during mine, but I decided to keep my hands to myself until after we eat. The amazing sex we had in the shop is enough to hold me over for a couple of hours.
Before I can answer, he says, “I figured we could just order in since it’s getting late. I’ll cook tomorrow.”
“Pizza sounds great. And when it comes to my pies, I have one rule–the more meat, the better.”
“One meat lovers. Got it.”
He walks back into the other room to order it while I try to coax Mia up on the couch with me. It really doesn’t take too much convincing before she jumps up and curls up by my side. I grab a pillow to prop up under her neck, and I start rubbing the top of her head.
Man, it’s been forever since I’ve been around a dog like this.
Knowing I was always moving around, I didn’t want to adopt one and constantly be uprooting it, so I held off.
Plus, a lot of the guys I dated didn’t really care for dogs–or animals in general.
I guess that should have been a huge red flag.
And my parents haven’t had a dog in years, so I’m happy to have Mia to cuddle up with.
When Beau walks back in, he says, “Well, you two look comfortable.”
I smile. “We are. You didn’t tell me this dog was so snuggly. I love it.”
“Remember that sentiment when her feet are in your face when you wake up in the middle of the night. Fair warning, her toes smell like corn chips.”
“Joke’s on you. I love corn chips,” I reply with a giggle. “Do you want me to scoot over, and you can join us?”
“No, that’s okay. I think I’m going to play on the computer for a bit. You two can get to know each other better.”
He leans down to give me a kiss before sitting at his desk.
I thought about playing the game he got for me, but I’m just too tired tonight. Mia and I watch Forrest Gump, and it doesn’t take her long to start snoring. I’m not far behind her when my phone vibrates next to me.
I look at it and see it’s a group chat with all my sisters. Ronnie’s the first one to type a message.
Ronnie: Joanna Lawson, you’ve been holding out on us.
Liz: What did she do now?
I immediately know I’m about to get scolded for the whole Beau thing.
Me: Ronnie, you knew I hooked up with Beau. I told you when we were in bed together.
Leah: In bed? Something you want to share?
Liz: Damn, Jo. First you get into Beau’s bed, and then, Ronnie’s. I feel a little left out.
Michelle: Ditto.
Ronnie: Jo, you told me you two hooked up. Once. I had to find out from Drew that you guys are dating, and you stayed with him all weekend.
Me: It all just kind of happened.
Liz: How does that just happen? Did you slip and fall and land on his penis?
Me: Liz, call it a dick or a cock. You sound like Michelle. Well, Michelle before she started getting some of that good Vitamin D.
Michelle: Yep!
Ronnie: We need to have a girl’s night to discuss all of these recent developments.
Leah: I second that, but it needs to be after I recover from feeling like death.
Ronnie: Uh, yeah. We don’t want you infecting us.
Liz: How about Friday night?
I let them all make the plans because I honestly don’t even think they need me for this conversation.
After the date is set for Friday, they start discussing locations.
It's decided we’ll do it at Ronnie’s extra house–as we call it.
A few years ago, when Ronnie moved back to town she moved into Liz’s old place.
She was renting it at first but eventually bought it.
Her original plan was to turn it into a rental for some extra income, but she never got that far.
A lot of her stuff is still there, and I think sometimes, she goes there to decompress when life gets to be a little too much.
Settling down has been a rough transition for her, and I think Drew knows that and gives her space when she needs it.
My sisters decide that would be the perfect place to host girls’ night since there won’t be any men or kids around to interrupt us.
We are just finishing this conversation when Beau brings me some pizza. I’ve been so busy staring at my phone that I didn’t even hear the door.
“Damn,” I say. “I must be really out of it.”
“You and Mia both.” He smiles. “My mighty guard dog didn’t even flinch.”
I look down at the pup who is now giving me big sad eyes, hoping for some pizza. “You better leave this sweet girl alone.”
As we eat, Beau asks, “Everything okay with your sisters?”
“Yeah, they want to have a girls' night on Friday.”
“That sounds like fun.”
“Eh, I guess. I’m not super thrilled, but I can get out of it if I really want to.”
“Jo, I’m not meaning to be a buzzkill here, but take it from someone who lost his brother, spend the time with your siblings while you still can.”
“Well, now, you made me feel bad,” I joke. “But I know you’re right. You’ll just have to get on with your Friday night without me.”
“You go have fun, and I’ll be here waiting when you’re done.”
We finish our pizza, and I consider cashing in on the promise of seven orgasms, but the longer I sit here, the heavier my eyelids become. And before I know it, I’m out like a light.
