39. Lucy #3

“The countdown,” I say. “There was a countdown. Thirty-two minutes.”

“Torren is analyzing the signal.”

“Helix was going to destroy the water. The clinic. Nara’s son.”

“Yes.”

My voice cracks. “They were going to do that.”

Rethan’s hands curl at his sides.

The bond holds.

He does not reach for me.

But he says, “They did not succeed.”

I look past him to the meeting hall, the field, the people gathering in the rows of grain. My people. My valley. The thing Helix tried to bleed and failed to kill.

“I need—”

I stop.

I cannot name what I need.

Rethan does.

He lifts one hand, and the bond reaches between us like a promise.

“We can find a place,” he says. “If you need one.”

My gaze moves over the field, the clinic, the tribunal feed still glowing in the distance.

Then I face him.

“Yes,” I say.

He does not smile.

But the bond warms.

And for the first time all day, I let myself breathe.

The old barn is abandoned, half-collapsed, and forgotten.

It is perfect.

Rethan leads me through the sagging door and into the shadows where dust motes drift in the last light. The air smells of dry hay and old wood, and everything else falls away.

The live slate is off.

The feed is silent.

The valley’s demands are elsewhere.

I turn to face him, and the bond answers with a heat that has been banked too long.

“You cannot speak to me,” I say. “During the hearing. You cannot help.”

“That is the restriction.”

“They made you watch me fall.”

“I watched you stand.”

I close my eyes.

When I open them, he is closer.

His hands find my waist, careful, aching, and I step into him like coming home. The bond flares bright between us, and for one long moment, there is only the warmth of his body against mine.

“Rethan—”

“Say it. Tell me.”

I pull him down by the front of his tunic.

“I need to remember I am alive.”

He kisses me.

It is not gentle. It is not careful. It is the kiss of a man who spent hours watching the woman he loves cross into danger without him, held back by procedure and law and the cruelty of careful words.

His hands catch my jacket, pushing it from my shoulders. The fabric falls to the dusty floor, and I reach for his tunic, my fingers working the fastenings with trembling impatience. He catches my hands, stilling them.

“Let me,” he says.

He pulls the tunic over his head himself, and the movement is almost violent in its urgency. The garment joins mine on the floor, and then I am pressing against him, skin to skin, the cool light of his bioluminescent patterns rising to meet my warmth.

“You glow for me,” I whisper.

“Only for you.”

My hands move down his chest, tracing the light, following the patterns that pulse in time with his heartbeat. I can feel the bond through every point of contact, a current that hums between us, amplifying every breath, every touch, every desperate sound.

His hands find the fastening of my trousers. He works them loose with care, though his fingers shake. The fabric slides down my legs, and I step out of them, kicking them aside. My shirt follows, then his trousers, until nothing remains between us but the bond and the heat.

“Too many layers,” I say.

“You have said that before.”

“You keep ignoring me.”

“I am trying to improve.”

I laugh against his mouth, broken and fierce, and he kisses the sound from my lips. His hands find my waist, lifting me, and I wrap my legs around his hips as he carries me to the old hay.

He lays me down with care, though I pull him after me, not wanting even a breath of distance between us. His body covers mine, and I arch into him, my fingers tangling in his hair.

“Rethan—”

“I know what you need.” His mouth finds my throat, trailing kisses down my neck, my collarbone, the curve of my breast. “I can feel how much this matters through the bond.”

“Then stop talking.”

He smiles against my skin.

His hand moves lower, tracing my stomach, finding me slick and ready. I gasp as his fingers find my clit, stroking in slow circles that make my hips buck against his hand.

“Rethan, please—”

“Do not tell me to hurry.”

“I am not telling you to hurry. I am telling you to touch me.”

He slips one finger inside me, then two, and I cry out, my nails raking his shoulders. He works me slowly, watching my face, learning every flicker of pleasure. The bond echoes my sensation back to him, doubling the heat until he can barely breathe.

“Look at me,” he says.

I do.

“You belong to yourself,” he says. “But if you choose me, then choose me fully. Not the Authority. Not fear. Me.”

The possessive heat in my voice when I answer undoes him.

“Choose you,” I say. “I choose you, Rethan Veyr. Now stop talking and fuck me.”

He positions himself at my entrance, and I feel him, the heat and weight of him, and I pull him closer with my legs.

“Say it again,” he says.

“Fuck me.”

He pushes inside me.

I gasp, the feeling of him overwhelming, and he pauses to let me adjust. The bond flares wide open, pleasure echoing pleasure until I cannot tell where my body ends and his begins. He is deep inside me, filling me completely, and I wrap my legs tighter around his hips, urging him deeper.

“Don’t stop,” I say. “Rethan, don’t stop.”

He begins to move.

The rhythm is not careful. It cannot be.

Everything about this moment has been built from the fragments of two lives refusing to stay separate, and the joining feels inevitable, like water finding its level or fire spreading to dry grass.

I rise to meet him, my hips tilting, my hands gripping his shoulders.

He kisses my throat, my collarbone, the curve of my breast. I arch into his mouth, and he takes my nipple between his lips, teasing, tasting. I gasp, the sensation sending sparks through the bond.

“More,” I say. “Harder.”

He gives me what I ask for. His thrusts deepen, faster now, and I meet each one, the old barn creaking around us, the hay rustling beneath us. The bond burns hot between us, pleasure feeding pleasure until I can feel his need as clearly as my own.

“Look at me,” I say.

He does.

“Mine,” I say. “Say it.”

“Yours.”

“Again.”

“Yours. Only yours. Always yours.”

I kiss him, and he moves deeper, and the bond tightens like a wire pulled taut. My pleasure becomes his. His need becomes mine. We move together, the old barn holding us, the world outside forgotten.

“Now,” I gasp. “Rethan, now—”

He feels my climax approach through the bond, the building pressure, the heat, the desperate need.

He thrusts deeper, faster, and I shatter beneath him, my release a wave that pulls him with me.

He follows, spilling inside me with a groan that comes from somewhere deeper than his chest. His hands find mine, lacing our fingers together as the pleasure crests and begins to recede.

For a while, neither of us moves.

The barn holds us in quiet darkness. Outside, the valley continues without us. The tribunal waits. Helix waits.

But here, in the hay and the shadows, there is only Rethan.

I rest my head against his chest and close my eyes.

“We are going to win this,” I say.

“Yes.”

“And then we stay.”

He kisses my forehead.

“Yes.”

I laugh, exhausted and fierce, and for one perfect moment, the world is small enough to hold.

Then the bond flickers.

Not alarm.

Purpose.

I open my eyes.

“I have to go back,” I say.

“I know.”

“Rethan—”

“I know.”

He kisses me once more, slow and certain, and helps me to my feet.

We dress in silence, touching when we can, leaving the barn behind like a secret the valley will never need to know.

I walk back toward the meeting hall with my boots dusty and my hair wild and my heart so full I think it might break.

Rethan walks beside me until the last threshold, where procedure waits.

And the bond carries us both forward, stronger than any law Helix could write.
